MOHE, Heilongjiang, Jan. 1 (Xinhua) -- An oil pipeline linking Russia's far east and northeast China began operating Saturday.At 11:50 a.m., Yao Wei, general manager of the Pipeline Branch of Petro China Co., Ltd. (PBPC), pushed a button in the China-Russia border county of Mohe, Heilongjiang Province, five hours after the crude oil began being pumped through the pipeline to the border, marking the official start of operations after a two-month trial.PBPC is the operator of the Chinese section of the pipeline.The pipeline, which originates in the Russian town of Skovorodino in the far-eastern Amur region, enters China via Mohe and ends at China's northeastern city of Daqing. As 550,000 tonnes of crude oil had already traveled through the pipeline during the test run period, the Daqing terminal receives the oil 15 minutes after Yao pushed the button at Mohe."The operation of the China-Russia crude oil pipeline is the start of a new phase in China-Russia energy cooperation," Yao said at the launching ceremony.He noted that the pipeline would improve the nation's energy-imports structure and promote economic development.Sergey Tsyplakov, Russian trade representative in China, also said in early December that the completion of the pipeline project was a "milestone" for the development of both countries.Construction of the 1,000-km-long pipeline project, with 72 km within Russia and 927 km in China, started last year, and it will transport 15 million tonnes of crude oil from Russia to China annually between 2011 to 2030, according to the agreement signed between the two countries.This volume of oil means adding 8 billion U.S. dollars to the trade volume between China and Russia, and the import tariffs for China on the oil will be up to 10 billion yuan (1.5 billion U.S. dollars), according to the projection by Chinese customs officials based on the current international crude oil price.Yao said that after the oil arrives at Daqing's Linyuan Station it will enter the Pipeline Networks of Northeast China and be pumped to oil refineries in Dalian, Fushun and other cities.Luo Xuefeng, director with the entry-exit inspection and quarantine bureau of Mohe, said workers with the bureau would take daily oil samples to monitor the quality of the oil."So far, the pumped oil is qualified as regulated in the agreement," Luo said.The annual amount of oil shipped through the pipeline could increase, depending on the drilling capacity in Russia, said Tsyplakov.Further, Li Fuchuan, a researcher with the Chinese Academy of Social Sciences, said the operation of the oil pipeline would not only increase the crude trade, but also improve mutual trust between China and Russia, laying an economic foundation for the two countries' strategic partnership.Zhang Shibin, deputy manager of the PBPC Daqing branch, said although the operation has worked well during the trial period, measures need to be performed to prevent pipes from cracking in May."The pipe will face an 'important test' in May as snow and ice will melt at that time, bringing challenges to us. We will try to ensure its smooth operation," he said.

BEIJING, Dec. 22, (Xinhua) -- China has rejected the Vatican's criticism of a recent national congress of Chinese Catholics, blaming the Vatican for damaging relations between the two sides.A spokesperson for the State Administration for Religious Affairs (SARA) said Wednesday the Vatican's criticism was very imprudent and ungrounded.In a statement dated Dec. 17, the Vatican condemned the congress, which elected the new leadership of China's Catholic church, and accused China of violating religious freedom.The congress from Dec. 7 to 9 elected the heads and other senior members of the Chinese Catholic Patriotic Association (CCPA) and the Bishops' Conference of the Catholic Church in China (BCCCC).The spokesperson said the congress, which is held every five years to amend the CCPA's and BCCCC's constitutions, elect a new leadership and set future agenda, does not deal with Catholic doctrines or violate the fundamental Catholic faith, and "there is no question of getting recognition by any foreign organization or state."The spokesperson said China's religious freedom was protected by the Chinese Constitution, and it was a misinterpretation by the Vatican to declare the incompatibility of Catholic doctrine and the Chinese Catholic church's principle of independent self-governance.China's Constitution grants Chinese citizens freedom of religious beliefs, but requires independence of religious organizations and affairs in China from foreign influence.Under this constitutional provision, the Catholic church and other religions in China adhered to the principle of self-governance and self-support, the spokesperson said.The CCPA and the BCCCC endorsed this principle in their new constitutions adopted at the congress, according to the spokesperson."The BCCCC fulfills her Pastoral Mission at the Faith and Evangelization according to the power and authority of our Lord Jesus Christ and the Holy Spirit endowed upon His Disciples," said the BCCCC's constitution.On the dogma and moral teachings of the Church, the constitution said the BCCCC is "in union with the Successor of St. Peter, the Head of the community of the Disciples.""Has the Vatican not read the two constitutions? JINAN, Jan. 9 (Xinhua) -- Police in east China's Shandong Province said Saturday that one of the two killers who shot dead four policemen on Jan. 4 had also murdered another man before the gunfight.Liu Jianjun, 50, allegedly killed one man on Dec. 29 last year in Dezhou City of Shandong.Liu and his 52-year-old brother Liu Lumin shot at policemen who were investigating the Dec. 29 murder case in Tai'an City of the province on Jan. 4 .Three policemen were killed at the scene, and another died later in the hospital.After gunning down the officers, the two men fled the scene, hijacking four cars and shooting two drivers before their car collided with a police wagon.The gunmen, armed with a homemade pistol and a double-barreled shotgun, continued to fire after police had cornered them, injuring more policemen and civilians.Liu Lumin then shot and killed himself while Liu Jianjun was taken into custody.

WUHAN, Nov. 15 (Xinhua) -- Chinese Foreign Minister Yang Jiechi said Monday that Premier Wen Jiabao's imminent visit to Russia and the 15th regular meeting between the Chinese and Russian prime ministers would further promote the bilateral relationship.Yang made the remarks while meeting with his Russian counterpart Sergei Lavrov at the 10th Meeting of the Foreign Ministers of China, Russia and India in central China's Wuhan city.However, Yang did not give a specific date for the prime ministers' meeting in Russia.During his meeting with Lavrov, Yang praised progress of the development of China-Russia strategic partnership of coordination this year.
