SAN DIEGO (KGTV) - The sticker-shock of college can be daunting, but with planning and some research there is financial aid out there for the taking.To get the process started families must fill out the Free Application for Student Aid, better known as the FAFSA.The FAFSA is roughly 156 questions and looks at a family's financial situation.Colleges nationwide use the FAFSA to determine the amount of financial aid to award to students,The form can now be filled out online but college planning expert Ron Caruthers also recommends printing a paper copy for reference because it contains more guidance.“It’s my bread and butter because so many families really make mistakes and don’t understand the process," said Caruthers. "I’ve worked for 25+ years helping families pick schools that have money, not make mistakes on the FAFSA and save a ton of money on college.”Families can start submitting FAFSA’s October 1 and the deadline is March 2.Caruthers recommends doing so by January.He says a major mistake families make is listing assets they're not required to, including their home, IRA's, and personal property.What you should list: cash, stocks and bonds that aren't in a retirement account, and equity in a rental home.“This is an area of enormous stress because, for a lot of families, next to their house this is going to be their biggest investment, and it's going to come in a very short period of time, unlike a house they can pay off over 30 years,” said Caruthers.He says it's important to be detail-oriented on the FAFSA, for example, making sure you put income in the right line. SAN DIEGO (KGTV) — Thousands of children and their families enjoyed a Christmas miracle Saturday, as Toys for Joy delivered smiles across the county.About 8,000 - 9,000 people made their way through the lines outside four locations packed with toys as part of the event, at Lincoln High School, Cajon Valley Middle School, Castle Park High School, and Guajome Park Academy in Vista.At Lincoln High School, some families camped out for the event, waking up to toys and more generous donations. Every child under the age of 11 will walk away with a brand new toy. Families got their own holiday miracle, as other stations offer gently used clothing and also bring home groceries.Toys for Joy has been a free community event for 23 years and is hosted by The Rock Church. 776

SAN DIEGO (KGTV) — The trolley's Mission Valley stadium site will be closed for two years due to construction on Aztec Stadium.MTS' stadium station will begin the two-year closure on Sunday, Nov. 1, as crews continue to transform the stadium land into a stadium for San Diego State University. The closure will impact the Sycuan Green Line.The station plans to reopen in 2022.The station is a vital connection between SDSU's main campus and the stadium. SAN DIEGO (KGTV) — The San Diego City Attorney's Office has filed charges against a man accused of harassing multiple women at a Mission Valley shopping center.Three misdemeanor charges were filed against Orlando Chavez of San Diego, including two for false imprisonment, and one for criminal assault and battery. The City Attorney's Office says Chavez held some women against their will by climbing under their cars and refusing to come out.City officials say Chavez would approach most of his victims in a shopping center at 10330 Friars Rd. In one instance, he reportedly grabbed one woman by the arm and told her, “You can flatten me out any time.” The City Attorney's official initially indicated the incidents took place at Westfield Mission Valley, but later said that was incorrect.In another instance, he reportedly followed a woman into her workplace, and approached another victim as she waited to pick up her children at school. City officials say police investigated him for stalking that woman for nearly two years and slashing the tires of her husband’s car."Everyone has the right to feel safe when going to work, shopping, or picking up their children at school," City Attorney Mara Elliott said. "As City Attorney, I take seriously threatening and harassing behaviors like this and will hold accountable individuals who endanger the safety of any San Diegan."Investigators added that Chavez, 72, has a history of crawling under women's vehicles to prevent them from leaving dating back to 2018.In multiple incidents, he was seen driving a white Chevrolet truck, with a personalized license plate reading HINUF.
