More than 40 percent of attendees at an overnight summer camp became infected with Covid-19 within days before officials shut it down, according to the CDC.Local media reports it was a YMCA camp near a lake in Rabun County, Georgia.More than 260 staff and campers tested positive for the coronavirus, out of a total 597 people who were at the camp sometime between when it opened and when it closed in mid-June. Of the 260 who tested positive, 231 were campers aged 6 to 17 years old.In their report published Friday, the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention says camp officials followed most of their recommended safety protocols. They say the two measures not implemented were cloth masks for campers and opening windows and doors for increased ventilation in buildings. Masks were required for staff members.The camp held orientation for staff members and trainees between June 17 to 21, then were joined by hundreds of kids on June 21 for a week-long camp session.On June 23, a teen staff member left the camp after developing chills the night before. They tested positive for Covid-19, and the camp began sending kids home on June 24. The entire camp was closed June 27.The camp was adhering to Georgia’s Executive Order that allowed overnight camps and required negative coronavirus tests less than 11 days before attending.“These findings demonstrate that SARS-CoV-2 spread efficiently in a youth-centric overnight setting, resulting in high attack rates among persons in all age groups, despite efforts by camp officials to implement most recommended strategies to prevent transmission,” says the CDC report on this outbreak.From the 136 cases where the CDC was able to gather symptom data, about 26 percent of those who tested positive for coronavirus had no symptoms at the time. 1804

EDEN, the Bronx — Police arrested three people Thursday in connection with the shooting death of a dad gunned down as he crossed a Bronx street with his daughter.Davon Delks, 21, Laquan Heyward, 25 and Devon Vines, 27, were all arrested on murder charges.Anthony Robinson, 29, was holding his 6-year-old daughter's hand when he was fatally shot on July 6. Video showed Robinson, hand in hand with his 6-year-old daughter, look to his left at a Bronx intersection and cross when a car paused to let them go. The driver then pulled up and someone in the vehicle opened fire, striking Robinson repeatedly.Robinson collapsed to the ground at East 170th Street and Sheridan Avenue. NASHVILLE, Mich. - A family with a passion with aviation decided to take their hobby on the road.Gino Lucci of Nashville, Mich. is a pilot, mechanic, and federal inspector of aviation. His passion prompted an idea when he was a kid."I always wanted to do one, since I was 12-years-old, and I just wanted to make an airplane out of a motor home," said Lucci. "The truck won't fly, but the airplane drives."Lucci named the RV The Fabulous Flamingo.To make his plans a reality, Lucci's son Giacinto tracked down a plane in Missouri. It had been deemed inoperable due to a tornado that rolled through the area. The plane was built in 1943 and used in South America by the Navy during the World War II era."It took us about four to six weeks to really sit down and say, 'Alright, I’ll sell it to you," Giacinto recalled.The family gutted the airplane but tried to keep as much of the original interior as possible. Some of the parts they removed were sent to France to restore a similar plane for a D-Day memorial.The RV is classified as a Class A motor home and is up to safety standards. (KGTV) - Some unexpected joy is arriving in the mail for residents of local senior care facilities, amid the ongoing restrictions on visitors.When the coronavirus pandemic forced visitor restrictions on nursing homes, Terri Martinson was conflicted. Her father is a resident at Parkview at Paradise Village in National City. She was happy the health of her father - Clyde Hasemeyer - was being protected, but she knows her dad."My dad is very social. He loves getting visitors, and telling jokes, playing games, singing and laughing. I was really concerned he wouldn't have any visitors," said Martinson.She and her family call often and write letters, but a few days ago, Clyde got a letter from someone he doesn't know. Clyde, a Koren War Marine Veteran, received a letter from 14-year-old Christian Hughes.10news caught up with Christian and his mother Mariana a few days ago as they began a letter-writing campaign for local senior care facilities. Their idea caught fire on social media. Hundreds of letters and cards have started to arrive at nursing homes, ending up in the hands and hearts of people like Clyde."My dad was so happy. He laughed and enjoyed it so much. He asked the caregiver to tape them up on his wall, so he could look at them all the time. Just makes him feel so nice not to be so isolated away from everyone," said Martinson.It's a feeling of not being alone during a time of staying apart. Children playing in the snow: it's cute and seasonal in East County. But Mt. Laguna resident and business owner Nica Knite says, please stay away. "It's only been a few days people, you could hang at home for a few days. Come on," Knite said. Last weekend, Knite was appalled to see hundreds of cars lined up along Mile Marker 19 on Sunrise Highway. Families seemingly ignored social distancing rules. "The idea of recreating outside and going for a walk might seem like a healthy thing to do. But if people are playing in the snow and someone coughs on that snow and your kid falls onto that same snow, they have the opportunity to contract the virus," Knite said. "So it becomes a giant petri dish of danger."Scientists say COVID-19 could have an easier time surviving and reproducing in colder temperatures. It's because of the large crowds and cooler temperatures that on Sunday, Cleveland National Forest Rangers closed all their campgrounds, day-use areas, and two of their most popular trails: Three Sisters Falls and Cedar Creek Falls. "When you're hiking the trails, they're very narrow, and with the number of people we had, they absolutely could not have any kind of social distancing," Mike Kobliska, Assistant Public Information Officer of the Cleveland National Forest, said.
