Saturday marks the 87th anniversary of the "Star-Spangled Banner" being named the national anthem — and the song hasn't seen this much controversy since being anointed the official song of the United States in 1931.On top of becoming a political platform for athletes and politicians alike, the anthem has seen some of its most unique performances in the past year — most notably, Fergie's controversial rendition at the 2018 NBA All Star game.But Fergie's version of the "Banner" is just one of many controversial renditions of the song. As it celebrates it's birthday as America's anthem, let's revisit a few more notable renditions.Jose Feliciano — 1968 World SeriesFeliciano was among the first artists to deviate from the traditional playing of the anthem — and he did it in front of a nationwide audience. With the country already divided by the Vietnam War, Feliciano's rendition outraged many. Newspaper reports called Feliciano's performance "disgraceful," and some called him a "hippie."Despite the controversy at the time, Feliciano was invited back to Detroit to sing the anthem 44 years later before a Tigers playoff game, where he received unanimous applause.Jimi Hendrix — Woodstock (1969)Prior to Hendrix's performance at Woodstock, it was hard to imagine the national anthem being played on an electric guitar. Now, it's considered one of the most iconic renditions of the anthem ever performed.Roseanne Barr — San Diego, 1990Comedienne Roseanne Barr is not known for her singing voice, and it showed during her rendition of the anthem prior to a baseball game between the San Diego Padres and the Cincinnati Reds. She screeched her way through the anthem, and capped it all off by spitting on the ground and grabbing at her crotch.Barr maintains her act was a joke, and told the Washington Post that she wasn't trying to respect the anthem or the flag with her performance. President George Bush disagreed.For her part, Barr maintains her version of the anthems was better than Fergie's.Whitney Houston — 1991 Super BowlWith the country newly entangled in a foreign war and security tensions high at the world's biggest sporting event, Houston delivered perhaps the most stirring and inspiring live performance of the anthem in the song's history. Even after her death, Houston's performance at the Super Bowl remains one of her most played songs.Jack Black — Los Angeles, 2011Black is most known for his slapstick comedy, so it must have been strange for fans of the WNBA's Los Angeles Sparks step to the mic for the anthem in 2011.However, Black is one half of the musical duo known as Tenacious D, and showed off his pipes in the 2003 comedy "School of Rock." Whether or not the Staples Center crowd was ready for it, Black went out and delivered a stirring rendition of the "Star Spangled Banner."Jesse McGuire — 2013 NFL PlayoffsThough the national anthem is played and sung live dozens of times each day, it's not often that an instrumental version of the anthem is played solo. (KGTV) – U.S. Customs and Border Protection paid a staffing consultant million that has so far yielded two rank-and-file employees, a new federal watchdog report says.The Office of Inspector General says CBP signed a nearly 0 million contract with Accenture in November 2017, meant to hire 7,500 new workers across departments.But a year later, Accenture has hired two workers. “Accenture is nowhere near satisfying its 7,500-person hiring goal over the next five years,” the report says. “Further, CBP has used significant staffing and resources to help Accenture do the job for which it was contracted.”Accenture said in a statement it remains focused on fulfilling CBP’s exceptions. A CBP spokesperson says the agency takes issue with some of the reports findings, but acknowledged the contract has been a challenge. CBP says the .6 million to Accenture has gone to creating a hiring structure, an applicant care center, marketing and conducting various steps in the hiring process.“CBP is constantly working to strengthen its hiring capabilities to ensure staffing for critical frontline operations, while maintaining our high personnel standards,” the CBP said in a statement. The lack of workers is being felt along the San Ysidro border, where wait times can be upwards of two hours, and not every booth is staffed by an agent.“Anytime you have people waiting in line instead of working, instead of shopping, instead of going to restaurants, you’re losing money,” said Cindy Gompper-Graves, head of the South County Economic Development Council, who described the report as a bit troubling. 1634

SANTA BARBARA, Calif. (KGTV) - The captain of the sister ship to the one that caught fire off the coast of Santa Barbara, killing at least 25, is sticking up for its crew.Ian Higgins is the captain of the Vision, a sister ship nearly identical to the Conception, which caught fire near Santa Cruz island Monday morning. Higgins spoke to 10News after media reports calling the safety protocol of the Conception into question."That vessel is inspected by the Coast Guard annually and also every five years for a more complete inspection," said Higgins, who works for Truth Aquatics. "If you think the Coast Guard would allow a vessel carrying that many passengers to operate without any type of fire suppression system, I don’t know what one would believe."RELATED: 20 bodies recovered from boat fire off coast of Southern California, officials sayRecords show the Conception had no issues after a Coast Guard inspection in February. Higgins said any report that the passengers were locked in the ship is patently false. He said passengers are given safety briefings the morning after they get on the ship. Scrap metal thieves are becoming so brazen, they're now now taking parts off of gas grills at Walmart in the middle of the shopping day, according to Cleveland's Environmental Crimes Task Force.Sgt. Andrew Ezzo said the crooks took nearly 100 pounds in valves and other parts from display gas grills at the Walmart located on Brookpark Road in Cleveland."The only way they found out is because they sold a couple of display models, and people had to bring them back and said, 'Where's our parts?'" said Ezzo. "They think they can take whatever they want. They think they're entitled to it."Ezzo said his task force has reported a series of thefts at major companies in all parts of the city. Two thieves were caught on surveillance video at Menyhart Plumbing on Lorain Road stealing thousands of pounds in antique home heating radiators. Owner Peter Menyhart said the task force used his surveillance video and its relationship with area scrap yards to make an arrest in less than a day."Basically anything those two guys could physically carry, they carried out of here," Menyhart said. "They didn't have any money, so they're like, 'Hey, lets go steal some scrap, and we could go drop it off at 7 a.m. at the scrap yard and get some cash.'"The scrap yard involved reported the stolen items, and police found suspects in just a few hours.Ezzo said his task force is in a battle, but the efforts of his team have reduced the number of thefts so far in 2018."In 2014, 2015 and 2016, the State of Ohio led the nation in scrap theft," Ezzo said. "The deal that we make with the scrap yards is if I find the victim, the victim is going to pay you whatever you paid for it, that way the scrap yard is not out the money."Menyhart said his company will add additional security cameras. He had nothing but praise for Ezzo and his team."He said, 'I'm going to put out a bulletin. I'm going to catch these guys before the day is out.' SANTEE, Calif. (KGTV) — Flames sparked in heavy brush in a Santee riverbed on Thursday, spreading dangerously close to several homes.The three- to four-acre brush fire was reported off Mission Gorge Rd. and Fanita Dr. just after 12 p.m. Sky10 video showed flames in the brush behind homes along Willowgrove Ave.At least one helicopter responded to the fire and quickly began making water drops, pulling water from the San Diego River nearby. Several firefighters were also on the ground spraying the flames from behind homes.One firefighter has been injured, though the severity of their injuries was unclear.San Diego Sheriff's Department said seven or eight homes need to be temporarily evacuated, but should be able to return home since the fire has been contained.SDSO closed Carlton Hills Blvd. between Mission Gorge Rd. and Carlton Oaks Dr. while crews fought the blaze.Crews are expected to be in the area into the night to mop up the area. 955
