LIMA, Nov. 23 (Xinhua) -- China's top political advisor Jia Qinglin met with the president of Peru's Congress, Luis Alva, here on Monday to discuss bilateral ties.     Jia, chairman of the National Committee of the Chinese People's Political Consultative Conference, said China views Peru, one of the first Latin American nations that recognized the People's Republic of China, as a good friend and partner in the region. The two countries have also coordinated closely on international and regional issues, he added.     China and Peru are facing the common task of boosting economic growth and improving people's living standards, Jia said, noting that deepening their friendly and mutually beneficial cooperation serves the fundamental interests of both countries. Peru is the second leg of his four-nation tour, which will also take him to Ecuador and Brazil. He has already visited the Philippines.

Taufik told Chinese leaders that this showed the importance attached by Indonesia to relations with China.     Indonesia valued the friendly and cooperative ties with China, he said, hoping that the two nations would increase pragmatic cooperation in infrastructure construction and resources exploitation.     He said the People's Consultative Assembly was ready to strengthen exchanges and cooperation with the NPC and the CPPCC to contribute to comprehensive growth of Indonesia-China ties.     Taufik reiterated that his country would firmly stick to the one-China policy.

BEIJING, Dec. 26 (Xinhua) -- China's top legislature ended its five-day bimonthly session Saturday, approving tort liability and island protection laws and an amendment to the renewable energy law.     Wu Bangguo, chairman of the Standing Committee of the National People's Congress (NPC), told the closing meeting that the Tort Law was significant in "protecting civil rights and people's interests, preventing and punishing infringement acts, reducing conflicts and promoting social harmony and stability."     The top legislator said the amendment to the renewable energy law would "greatly promote a healthy and rapid development of the renewable energy sector and adjust energy structure to strengthen the building of an environment-friendly and resource-saving society."     The island protection law would play a key role in protecting islands' eco-system, rationally utilizing natural resources and safeguarding the country's marine rights, Wu said.     The session also examined two reports from the State Council on employment and boosting development of small and medium-sized enterprises.     It also voted to ratify a United Nations protocol to combat human trafficking -- the Protocol to Prevent, Suppress and Punish Trafficking in Persons, Especially Women and Children, supplementing the UN Convention against Transnational Organized Crime.     The session also approved a pact on criminal judicial assistance between China and Malta.     It voted to appoint Han Changfu, former governor of northeastern Jilin Province, as agricultural minister.     The meeting also decided to open the annual plenary session of the NPC on March 5 next year. BEIJING, Nov. 24 -- Taxi passengers in Beijing will have an extra yuan added to their fares. The move is meant to offset the city's rising fuel prices, as they hit their highest levels in years.    The new taxi fare policy will begin this Wednesday on November 25, 2009. One yuan will be added to any trip exceeding 3 kilometers.     Beijing will continue to work on linking taxi fares with gasoline prices.     Meanwhile, most of local residents say they accept the surcharge.     A local resident of Beijing said, "A one yuan surcharge won't affect me too much. I'm OK with it." The new Beijing taxi fare policy will begin on Nov. 25, 2009. One yuan will be added to any trip exceeding 3 kilometers    Another said, "Some Chinese provinces have already taken similar measures, such as Yunnan and Shandong. I think it's fine. We should do it."     Taxi drivers have explained that the extra yuan will provide compensation for the increase in pump prices.     A taxi driver in Beijing said, "If I serve 40 passengers a day, it will create an additional 40 yuan. That can help me cope with the recent fuel price rises. I don't think passengers will give up taking taxi just because of one yuan. But if the per kilometer fare rises, many will think differently."     According to the new policy, the government, taxi companies, and passengers will share the cost of gasoline price fluctuations.     Beijing last saw an increase in taxi fares three years ago.

BEIJING, Dec. 7 (Xinhua) -- China's auto sales and output both exceeded 12 million units in the first 11 months, the China Association of Automobile Manufacturers (CAAM) announced Monday.     The CAAM forecast sales and output for the whole year would both exceed 13 million units.     In November alone, sales reached more than 1.35 million units, according to preliminary statistics. Detailed figures are expected to be released on Tuesday.     The country's largest auto maker, Shanghai Automotive Industry Corporation, sold about 2.44 million auto units in the first 11 months, up 54 percent year on year, while Sino-U.S. joint venture company Shanghai GM sold 627,495 units, up 50.5 percent.
