Cereal company General Mills announced on Thursday that its employees are eligible for up to 20 weeks of paid maternity leave under a new company policy, effective Jan. 1, 2019. Also part of the announcement, General Mills said it will offer up to 12 weeks for paid paternity and adoption leave for its employees. While the United States' Family Medical Leave Act requires most employers to allow staff to take up to 12 weeks off, the act does not require employers to pay employees for leave. General Mills said the new rules apply to its salaried and non-union employees. Other changes in family leave policy announced by General Mills include:      ● Caregiver Leave: A new benefit in 2019, General Mills will now offer caregivers a two-week paid leave for the care of immediate family members with a serious health condition. 882

CHAPEL HILL, N.C. – The pandemic ignited a global fight against a fast-moving and deadly virus. “In the beginning, a lot of manufacturers shifted gears and started doing more COVID manufacturing," said Dr. Melissa Miller, a clinical lab director.Manufacturers began ramping up testing production and diverting supplies to combat the virus. But in the months ahead, laboratories started facing another threat due to a strained supply chain. Not only were labs facing shortages of supplies needed for COVID-19, but several other common illnesses. “Probably the biggest one was for sexually transmitted diseases, chlamydia, gonorrhea being the most common ones we diagnose in the labs," said Dr. Miller. The American Society for Microbiology (ASM) partnered with the Association of Supply Chain Management to track shortages across the country. ASM leaders say the data collection tool provides a near real-time visualization into the capacity, utilization, and resources necessary to meet consumer and patient demand for testing.“It was a bit of a surprise of how overwhelming it was throughout the country and that there weren’t just hot spots; it really indicated that this was a major national issue," said Dr. Miller. “The first week of the survey, almost 90% of the laboratories that responded reported a shortage of tests for STI’s.”Dr. Miller has a leadership role within ASM and has also been experiencing shortages in the lab firsthand."It’s a guessing game. Many times we don’t know when the next shipment is coming for some of the items we’re short on," said Dr. Miller. Since September, 134 CLIA-certified labs have responded to the survey, which is updated every week. Dr. Miller says the figure for STI testing supplies has improved but is still too high around 50%. And she says 47% of labs have a shortage of non-COVID-19 testing supplies to detect routine bacteria, including the bacteria that cause strep throat, pneumonia, bronchitis, and urinary tract infections."Since June, I have been worried about this exact moment," said Dr. Miller. “You have the COVID surge, the upcoming holidays, and the winter season, and you have respiratory season."The survey also showed 74% of labs have a shortage of commercial testing kits for COVID-19.She says the hope is to include more labs in the weekly survey to get a clearer picture of the supply chain issues.“Data is power; we need the data that this is a problem. And getting some federal action on this, I think, is critical," said Dr. Miller. And she says the longer labs wait for critical supplies, the more Americans in need of critical testing could be turned away. 2641

CARLSBAD— It's the winter sport most famous for being a bit odd. Curling usually soars in popularity during the Winter Olympics, but you can also play year-round, even in sunny San Diego. Each week, members of “Curl San Diego” gather at the Icetown Skating Rink in Carlsbad to teach people curling. “It’s fascinating and something you don’t usually see, so everyone wants to try it,” said Owen McLachlan, the club’s vice president. The idea behind curling is simple. Shove a 42-pound rock as close to the center of a target as possible. In reality, it’s not so easy. “It’s usually called, ‘Chess on Ice,’” McLachlan said. Similar to bocce or shuffleboard, the team closest to the center gets the points. The sweeping heats up the ice, reducing friction and allowing the stone to travel farther and straighter.“An eighth of an inch can make or break a shot,” said Karen Coombs, who grew up playing in Canada, but now lives in San Diego. The Carlsbad club started after the 2006 Winter Olympics in Torino, Italy. Organizers say a lot of Canadians in San Diego wanted a place to play, and when the Winter Olympics come around..“We'll have 200 people for a learn to curl,” Coombs said. A close-knit community just a stone's throw away. “Anywhere you have ice, you can have curling,” McLachlan said. For more information on Curl San Diego, click here. 1348

Catholic schools in the 39 central and southern Indiana counties that make up the Archdiocese of Indianapolis could deny enrollment to transgender students. As stated in a new policy, the decision would be made on a case-by-case basis."From a personal compassionate standpoint, you're hurting kids now," Belinda Drake said. "This has gone too far."Drake is a part of the LGBTQ community. She's also a candidate for state senate."Our educational system is supposed to be welcoming, it is supposed to be inclusive, it is supposed to provide everyone access," Drake said. "Now our most vulnerable children have to battle this."It's an eight-page document that calls for each decision to be made case-by-case. It notes students who may be confused on their sexuality can be admitted if they follow church teachings."I was heartbroken because at the end of the day they are discriminating against children," Drake said. The change goes on to say that children who have switched from their birth sex in any way may not be admitted."Policies have to include everybody regardless of how you love, how you identify, you still deserve an education," Drake said. "Our state is making progress. This was, to me, a slap in the face of what our Supreme Court just decided."The Archdiocese of Indianapolis released the following statement: 1330

Caitlyn Jenner says she made a "mistake" in thinking she could work with President Donald Trump to benefit the LGBQT community and is now no longer a Trump supporter. In a Washington Post op-ed published Thursday, Jenner said at first she believed she could work with Trump and Republicans to change the party's stance on LGBQT issues."Sadly, I was wrong," Jenner wrote, adding, "The reality is that the trans community is being relentlessly attacked by this president."She argued that Trump "has shown no regard for an already marginalized and struggling community.""Believing that I could work with Trump and his administration to support our community was a mistake," Jenner wrote. She pointed to a New York Times report that the Department of Health and Human Services has a draft proposal to define gender under Title IX as solely male or female at birth, with no room for change.Jenner said her hope in Trump and Republicans was "misplaced" and that she "cannot support anyone who is working against our community.""I do not support Trump," she wrote. "I must learn from my mistakes and move forward."Over three years ago, the famed US Olympian came out as transgender in an interview with ABC's Diane Sawyer. Jenner voted for Trump in the 2016 presidential election and told E! in an interview Trump "would be very good for women's issues."However, Jenner began criticizing the President after the Trump administration announced a ban on transgender people serving in the military and withdrew Obama era guidance for transgender students in public schools that let them use bathrooms and facilities corresponding with their gender identity.The-CNN-Wire 1665
