(KGTV) -- Wednesday, the City of Chula Vista filed a lawsuit against the Monsanto Company for chemical contamination.In the lawsuit filed by a law firm named Baron and Budd, the city says chemicals known as PCBs manufactured by Monsanto, now known as Bayer, have escaped into the city’s municipal stormwater system, leading the city to spend substantial amounts of money on cleanup.PCBs are known to cause a number of health issues in humans, such as cancer and damage to the immune system.RELATED: Jury awards 9 million in damages after man says he got terminal cancer from Monsanto's RoundupMonsanto was the sole manufacturer of the chemicals in the US between 1935 and 1979, when the chemicals were banned by the federal government.“Monsanto needs to stop playing games and accept responsibility for cleaning up the mess it’s made,” said Baron & Budd Shareholder, John Fiske. “Chula Vista is the latest city to recognize that PCB cleanup costs shouldn’t be passed on to its citizens, and I anticipate more cities and states will continue to follow suit.”RELATED: Bayer buys seed company Monsanto for billionThe chemicals were used numerous of commercial and industrial applications like paint, electric transformers, cable coatings, sealants and lubricants.Scientists say PCBs can’t be contained to their original applications so, when it rains, the chemicals escape into stormwater systems that wash into bodies of water, such as the bay.The law firm representing Chula Vista also represents San Diego, San Jose, Oakland, Berkley, Long Beach and several other cities in the Pacific Northwest in similar lawsuits. 1680

(KGTV) - A new exhibit at the Chula Vista Library's Heritage Museum is telling the stories of the South Bay's Holocaust Survivors."History repeats itself, and if you don't recall it, then it's going to happen again," says Curator Sandra Scheller.The exhibit, "RUTH: Remember Us The Holocaust," focuses on Scheller's mother, Ruth. She survived three concentration camps before coming to Chula Vista. It also features 11 other survivors who called the area home over the last 70+ years.Scheller says only five survivors are left in the South Bay, and she wants to make sure no one forgets what they went through, or how they made Chula Vista a better place throughout their lives."This was a labor of love," Scheller says. "I've loved every second of it."The exhibit features photos of the survivors, artifacts from Jewish life before, during and after the Holocaust, and personal touches from Scheller's family. It includes replicas of the yellow stars her grandparents wore during World War II, clothing and even a tooth from her grandmother."She had to break this tooth out because it had some gold in it," Scheller explains. "The Nazis would have killed her for this gold."The exhibit opens Sunday, January 12 and will remain on display throughout the year. CHULA VISTA, Calif. (KGTV) — A South Bay postal worker has pleaded not guilty to firing pepper spray at a dog. Nestor Medina was charged with three counts of animal cruelty in connection with the encounters 10News first reported in Otay Mesa last March. “It’s heartbreaking,” Alfonso Galindo said. Galindo checked surveillance video of his home on Agosto Street. Cameras recorded a postal carrier walking up to Galindo's mailbox and past the metal front gate. Behind the gate is Pupa, and as the mail carrier places the mail in the mailbox, a cylindrical object is seen in his left hand. At the same time, from another camera, Pupa is seen behind the gate beginning to convulse for several minutes. Galindo said his children, 3-year-old Alfonso Jr. and 1-year-old Regina developed strange respiratory problems after hugging Pupa. "Countless trips to the ER and urgent care, and countless medications," said Galindo. While the most severe symptoms subsided soon after the discovery of the video, Galindo says his children are dealing with sinus issues and his daughter still requires an inhaler.RELATED: More dogs pepper-sprayed by mail carrier?Galindo filed a police report and complaint with the U.S. Postal Service last spring. (KGTV) - Two Chula Vista parks closed Thursday due to the threat of falling trees and saturated ground amid a cold winter storm.The City of Chula Vista tweeted the closures about 3 p.m. Thursday.Hilltop Park, 780 Hilltop Drive, and Eucalyptus Park, 436 C Street, are located between I-5 and I-805 in the western half of the city. They will be shut down until crews can remove the trees, city officials said.The ground "is too saturated to access" the trees, according to the City of Chula Vista.All sports fields at both parks were also closed. 572

(KGTV) — Police have made an arrest after the body of a man was discovered in a bank parking lot late Wednesday.Chula Vista Police said 37-year-old Angel Padilla was arrested shortly before 12 p.m. on Thursday in the 300 block of Third Avenue.Police said a suspect matching Padilla's description was seen on security footage with a hatchet-type weapon near where the victim was found.The victim was discovered just before 10:30 p.m. on Wednesday behind the Bank of America located at 295 E Street.
