ATHENS, Oct. 3 (Xinhua) -- China and Greece issued a joint statement on Saturday, pledging to enhance their cooperation in various fields in an effort to deepen bilateral comprehensive strategic partnership.In a joint statement issued during the visit by Chinese Premier Wen Jiabao, the two countries expressed willingness to maintain frequent visits by leaders from both sides and enhance mutual political trust."The Greek government respects China's territorial integrity, reaffirms its adherence to the one China policy and supports the development of cross-Strait relations and China's reunification," the statement said.Both sides also agreed to promote the development of the China-EU comprehensive strategic partnership.Greece will continue to play a positive role in discussions within the EU over the recognition of China's full market economy status, which Athens believes is of great political significance, as China has made substantial progress on the issue within the framework of the World Trade Organization, said the statement.Hoping for a just, lasting and feasible solution to the Cyprus issue based on relevant UN resolutions, the two countries support the mediation efforts by UN Secretary General Ban Ki-moon.Greece is willing to cooperate with China in their joint fight against pirates and safeguard the international shipping, according to the statement. The two countries also agree to discuss the possibility of signing a Memorandum of Understanding on the issue.Both governments said they are ready to boost dialogue and cooperation to address climate change and make the upcoming UN climate change conference in Cancun, Mexico, achieve positive results.The two sides agree that the international financial crisis did not alter the long-term trend of world economic development. LANZHOU/BEICHUAN, Sept. 1 (Xinhua) -- After living through major tragedies, such as the Wenchuan Earthquake that claimed over 68,000 lives and the Zhouqu mudslides that left 1,400 dead, the new semester starting Wednesday may bring a much-needed sense of normality to the affected students.Senior high schoolers of the mudslides-hit Zhouqu County, northwest China's Gansu Province, began a new semester on a usual date, Sept. 1, which is the first day of school in many parts of China, but at a place 400 km south of Zhouqu, the provincial capital of Lanzhou.After the county was hit by massive mudslides on Aug. 8, two primary schools were damaged and high schools are now being used by these pupils. So high schoolers, altogether more than 3,000, were transferred to four schools in Lanzhou and Dingxi City."The new dormitory has everything -- bed sheets, tooth brushes, slippers, toilet paper, you name it", said Wang Wentian, whose house was destroyed. Fortunately, her family was not at home when the mudslides struck.Another student, Guo Xiangban, lost several loved ones in the mudslides. "I still feel sad when I am alone. But the past is the past and I have to move on with my life," said Guo.On the same day, students of the newly-built Beichuan High School, where over 1,000 students were killed after two school buildings collapsed during the Wenchuan earthquake on May 12, 2008, also started their new semester."I have never been in a school so beautiful. There is even a bathroom in our dorm," said Qiao Qi, a senior high student at Beichuan.The new school, covering an area of 15 hectares, can accommodate 5,200 students. MOSCOW, Aug. 31 (Xinhua) -- Russian President Dmitry Medvedev and Chief Executive of China's Hong Kong Special Administrative Region (HKSAR) Donald Tsang Yan-Kuen voiced their support here on Tuesday for the development of more direct links between Russia and Hong Kong.Tsang arrived in Moscow by the first ever direct commercial flight run by a Hong Kong airline.Tsang noted that after the lifting of visa restrictions in July 2009, two-way travels between Russia and Hong Kong rose by 100 percent."I am certain this flow will be increasing further," he was quoted as saying by local news agencies."The updating of the relevant listing rules in June this year would facilitate the listing of (Russian) mining and resource companies in Hong Kong," said Tsang.He also encouraged Russian companies to issue RMB bonds in Hong Kong, and welcomed Russian banks to set up branches in Hong Kong and make use of the RMB clearing and settlement system.Tsang was accompanied by 30 Hong Kong businessmen who were interested in cooperation with Russia."I hope that your meeting here in Moscow, including with members of the business community, will be useful," said Medvedev.The Russian president also invited Tsang to discuss the further advancement of bilateral cooperation as well as some key international issues.
