High-ranking officials of China and the United States started their talks in small groups here on Tuesday afternoon as part of the 21st Joint Commission on Commerce and Trade (JCCT) meeting.The plenary session of the 21st JCCT meeting will be held on Wednesday. In addition to talks on investment, trade, intellectual property right and other issues, it is expected that the two sides will sign a number of bilateral agreements on governmental cooperation at the talks later that day.The JCCT began in 1983 as a platform for both countries to promote trade and address issues of mutual concern.The 20th JCCT was held in east China's Hangzhou City on Oct. 28- 29, 2009.

CHENGDU, Dec. 5 (Xinhua) -- A spreading grassland fire in a mountainous Tibetan region in southwest China proved deadly when it trapped soldiers and local residents trying to put out the blaze. By Sunday night, at least 22 have been killed and three severely burned, local officials said.The wild fire was raging through a grassland atop a plateau some six kilometers from the county government seat in Daofu County, Tibetan Autonomous Prefecture of Garze, Sichuan Province. About 500 mu (33.3 hectares) of the grassland has burned, while 200 mu (13 hectares) is still on fire, a source with local fire-fighters told Xinhua."The fire line stretches several kilometers long. As it darkens at night, most fire-fighters have retreated to the camps." Yang Hao, a senior local fire-fighting official told reporters. "However, we are still closely monitoring the situation."Prairie fire is seen in Daofu County in southwest China's Sichuan Province, Dec. 5, 2010. At least 22 people have been killed in the prairie fire.About 2,000 people have joined the fire-fighting efforts. Sichuan Governor Jiang Jufeng led a work-team to Daofu, some 580 kilometers from provincial capital Chengdu, late Sunday night. An emergency medical team is also the en route to Daofu from Chengdu.Local officials said the grassland fire broke out at noon on Sunday and was brought under control at about 3 p.m. However, gusting winds boosted the flames and trapped people fighting the fire.Of the 22 fatalities, 15 were soldiers, two were workers with the grassland administration while five others were local civilians, officials said. Three of the severely injured have been rushed to hospitals.Gusting winds ebbed anew late Sunday night, providing favorable conditions to put out the flames, fire-fighters said.

BEIJING, Dec. 31 (Xinhua) -- On the last trading day of 2010, the Chinese currency, the yuan, strengthened to a record high for a second consecutive day, at 6.6227 per U.S. dollar, after 11 consecutive days of gains.The central parity rate of the currency, also known as the renminbi (RMB), was set two basis points stronger than Thursday's 6.6229, according to the China Foreign Exchange Trading system.China's central bank announced on June 19 it would further reform the formation mechanism of the yuan exchange rate to improve its flexibility.

TOKYO, Nov. 12 (Xinhua) -- Chinese President Hu Jintao arrived in Japan Friday for the 18th Economic Leaders' Meeting of the Asia-Pacific Economic Cooperation (APEC), which is slated for Saturday and Sunday in Yokohama.Hu and his wife, Liu Yongqing, were welcomed by senior officials from the Japanese Foreign Ministry at Haneda airport.Chief Executive Donald Tsang of the Hong Kong Special Administrative Region and Chinese Ambassador to Japan Cheng Yonghua were also present at the airport to greet Hu.President Hu, who flew into Tokyo from Seoul after attending the fifth summit of the Group of 20 (G20), was traveling by car to Yokohama.With the theme of "Change and Action," this year's Economic Leaders' Meeting will focus on the regional economic integration, a growth strategy for the Asia-Pacific region, human security, the economic and technical cooperation, and the assessment of achievement of Bogor Goals by APEC economies, according to the meeting agenda.The Bogor Goals call for free and open trade and investment in the Asia-Pacific by 2010 for industrialized economies and by 2020 for developing economies. UNITED NATIONS, Dec. 16 (Xinhua) -- China on Thursday voiced its hope that parties in the north and south Sudan will make continuous efforts for a peaceful, free, transparent and just referenda in Sudan in accordance with the 2005 Comprehensive Peace Agreement (CPA), and called for international efforts to create favorable conditions for the January referenda.The statement came as Yang Tao, the counsellor of the Chinese Permanent Mission to the United Nations, was addressing an open Security Council meeting on Sudan."We hope the north and south Sudan will keep up the momentum, speed up the preparation for the referenda and ensure that the referenda are conducted in a peaceful, free, transparent and just manner in accordance with the CPA," Yang said.A referendum on self-determination for southern Sudan is scheduled to be conducted on Jan. 9, 2011, as it was stipulated in the CPA inked between north and south Sudan in 2005, which ended a two-decade civil war between the two sides."We call on the international community to create a favorable condition for the referenda and refrain from prejudging the outcome," he said. "No party should take unilateral action. No matter what outcome of the referenda might be, peace and stability in Sudan and the region must be ensured."Inhabitants of the south will vote on Jan. 9, 2011 on whether to secede from Sudan or remain united with the rest of the country. On the same day, residents of Abyei, located in the center of the country, will vote separately on whether to retain Abyei's special administrative status in the north or become part of Bahr el- Ghazal state in the south.Since the Security Council held the high-level open meeting on Sudan last month, the peace process in Sudan continues to register positive progress, Yang noted."Voter registration for the referenda for southern Sudan has been concluded smoothly, we commend the north and south Sudan, the African Union and the UN Secretariat for the efforts to this end," he said."Maintaining the peace, stability and development in Sudan is in the interest of the Sudanese people, and it is also conducive to the peace and development in the region and in the African continent," Yang said."China hopes that the north and south will cherish the peace that was hard to come by, and continue their equal dialogue and consultation in order to reach an early agreement on the border demarcation, Abyei and wealth sharing and other outstanding issues, " he said. "This is of great significance to the maintenance of the long-term peace and stability in Sudan and the region."
