JAMUL, Calif. (KGTV) - Years of work vanished in just moments when the Valley Fire ripped through Jamul, destroying multiple barns and buildings at Hyslop Horse Haven.Patty Hyslop tried to save as many horses as she could when the fire approached the horse rescue but didn’t have time to evacuate all of them. When she returned later, miraculously, the horses left behind survived. The fire line clearly up against their corral.“I still think about oh my God those sheds that were right next to them that burned right next to them. They must’ve exploded. I still think God sent horse angels and put a big bubble over them,” said Hyslop.RELATED: Rescue horse ranch burned in Valley FireThree weeks after the fire started and the flames are out now, but there are months of rebuilding work ahead for Hyslop. The estimates losing about 0,000 of horse supplies that burned. She has multiple sclerosis and it’s hard to get around, but she says in the weeks following the fire her community has stepped up to help her.“My heart is so grateful to all these people, I don’t even have the words to tell them how much I love them and how wonderful they are and that we couldn’t do this without all the community coming to help,” Hyslop said.A GoFundMe set up will continue to help pay for items for the horses and replacing the lost buildings. 1344

LA JOLLA (CNS) - UC San Diego officials Wednesday were looking into reports that China is cutting off state funding for students from that country who want to study at the school. The concern stems from a Saturday tweet by Victor Shih, an associate professor of political economy at UCSD's School of Global Policy & Strategy, showing an image of a document he said was from the China Scholarship Council giving instructions to students planning to attend UCSD.RELATED: UCSD commencement speaker angers Chinese studentsAn English translation of the document said China's study abroad organizations would no longer process applications from students who have not been granted visas by the U.S. embassy, or scheduled a visa appointment, as of Sunday, according to Shih.Shih captioned the tweet: "China Scholarship Council puts a freeze on all CSC funded scholars to @GPS_UCSD , presumably due to Dalai Lama visit."The action comes three months after the Dalai Lama, who is fiercely opposed by China's communist government, gave a pair of keynote speeches at UCSD's commencement ceremonies. It was unclear whether the move to prohibit would-be scholars from attending UCSD was in retaliation for the appearance. 1223

Joe Clyde Daniels' father admitted to killing the 5-year-old, but search crews have not been able to find his body. It may seem like an open and shut case, but officials say a confession may not be enough.Joseph and Krystal Daniels were charged in the case of their autistic, 5-year-old son who went missing. Joseph confessed to beating his son to death. He was charged with homicide and Krystal was later arrested and charged with aggravated child neglect or endangerment.Crews in Dickson County, Tennessee vowed they wouldn't stop searching until the young boy was brought home and laid to rest.A legal battle is looming especially since Joe Clyde Daniel's body still has not been found. It is a simple question sure to be asked by the public defender: without a body can prosecutors even prove that Joe Clyde Daniels is dead?Yes, it's true his father Joseph Daniels is said to have confessed to beating the child to death, but without actually having a body it's not a done deal."Certainly it's a more difficult case if they have nothing to back up the confession," said attorney Jim Todd, who's closely followed the case.He said there certainly could be other evidence, perhaps blood from the scene, cadaver dogs hitting on a scent or even witness testimony potentially from the child's mother."There's a good chance, and this is a guess, the wife is charged as a leverage point on her to get her to roll," said Todd. But then there's this: Daniel's father says he believes prosecutors coerced the confession out of his son.  What happens if he recants his statement and insists he is innocent?"The jury will hear the statement and determine on their own if he was coerced or gave this confession or not," said Todd. That situation would only occur if the case goes to trial, and a trial is a long way off. Next up, a preliminary hearing for both parents on June 1.That's when prosecutors will lay out much of their case. Much can change between now and then. The question is: will investigators have found the child's remains in time for the next hearing?Their case could hinge on that development. Both parents remain held in the Dickson County Jail on million bond each.  2232

JACKSON, Miss. — Mississippi lawmakers are close to erasing the Confederate battle emblem from the 126-year-old state flag. The symbol is under criticism amid nationwide protests against racial injustice. The House and Senate voted Saturday to file a bill to remove the symbol that many see as racist. They could vote on that bill Sunday. A committee would design a new flag including the words “In God We Trust.” Voters would decide in November whether to endorse that design. Religious, education, sports and business leaders are pushing legislators to remove the Confederate symbol. Republican Gov. Tate Reeves said Saturday he will sign a bill to change the flag. 675
