I would appreciate it, but it was kind of like they didn't expect it or it's uncommon," she said. The million in scholarships won't make Jamya take it easy. The Lincoln Park Academy student said she's setting new goals."That all and all encourages me to just do my best and encourage other kids that look like me to do their best so that we can change the story," she said. Jamya has five colleges on her final list and she expects to choose one this weekend. Starting today, Walmart employees across the country will receive bonuses up to ,000. A press release states that employees could get a one-time bonus of up to ,000 and a fourth-quarter bonus based on their store's sales performance. Walmart has also expanded its paid leave policy, offering full-time hourly employees 10 weeks of paid maternity leave and six weeks of paid parental leave.  417

Stocks fell sharply Monday, dragged down by reports of trouble at Apple and Facebook.The Dow closed down 396 points and the Nasdaq tumbled 3%.Facebook stock fell nearly 6% as the company continues to deal with the fallout from a New York Times article that detailed Facebook's reaction to political scrutiny and its Cambridge Analytica scandal. CEO Mark Zuckerberg has reportedly adopted a more aggressive, "war"-like style, according to the Wall Street Journal.Alphabet was also down 4%. It is now down 20% from its peak in July, placing it in bear market territory.Early in the day, stocks fell on news that Apple's newest line of phones may not be selling as well as Apple or its investors had hoped.Apple's stock fell once more after the Wall Street Journal reported that Apple has cut orders for its iPhone XR, iPhone XS and iPhone XS Max.The new iPhones, which Apple unveiled in September, cost more than previous versions. The 9 iPhone XR is the least expensive new iPhone, but it costs more than last year's cheapest model, the iPhone 8.The iPhone XS Max can cost up to ,449. With many school districts in Virginia opting to start the school year with distance learning, one Hampton Roads social studies teacher shares his thoughts on how to help students have a virtually successful school year.Christopher True is a middle school social studies teacher who is gearing up for a new school year and the inevitable challenge that will come with it.True says communication is key to virtual success.“If that student is struggling with something, they may not be telling the parent.”He says parents should encourage their children not to be afraid to reach out to their teacher for help.True says the communication between students and teachers is just as important as the communication between the teachers and parents.He says parents shouldn’t be afraid of contacting teachers and describes virtual learning as “a community-led effort.”Schools will undoubtedly have expectations for students, even at home, but True hopes those expectations come leniency.“If you have a student whose parents work and [that student] actually has to go to daycare, they can't be expected to be in a class zoom at 10 a.m. if they don't have access to that stuff. And that's just going to be one of those things that we have to account for.”The test run of virtual learning at the end of last school year taught everyone new lessons, including that it takes time to adjust.While he’s banking on beginning the school year virtually, True is looking forward to connecting in the classroom once again.“There's no place I'd rather be. Tempe, Arizona police are investigating a deadly crash involving a self-driving Uber vehicle early Monday morning.  The Uber vehicle was reportedly headed northbound when a woman walking outside of the crosswalk was struck. The woman, identified as 49-year-old Elaine Herzberg, was taken to the hospital where she died from her injuries.Tempe Police says the vehicle was in autonomous mode at the time of the crash and a vehicle operator was also behind the wheel. No passengers were in the vehicle at the time. An Uber spokesperson said they are aware of the incident and are cooperating with authorities.They released the following statement: "Our hearts go out to the victim’s family. We are fully cooperating with local authorities in their investigation of this incident."Uber's CEO Dara Khosrowshahi also acknowledged the incident on Twitter: 906
