La Mesa, Calif. (KGTV) - An innovative young baker from Mount Helix is raising money for Parkinson's disease research in honor of her beloved grandfather, who is battling the disease.As many have done during these unusual times, Zoe Bernard took on a popular pandemic hobby."I learned how to make banana bread," says the 9 year-old.As Zoe perfected the recipe, she felt like something was missing, so she started experimenting with different ingredients, getting more bold as her creations continued to receive rave reviews from friends and neighbors. She took custom orders, adding nuts, candy bar pieces and including a couple of secret ingredients. The warm reception led her to begin selling her creations, but not to pad her own pockets. She and her mother Tina Contogenis discussed what would be most beneficial. Zoe decided to donate her profits to the Michael J. Fox Foundation for Parkinson's Disease research.Her "Papa" Joe Contogenis was diagnosed with the disease three years ago. The tough Marine is facing a difficult battle, with a tremor in his arm, and an increasing number of hard days.Zoe and Joe have a special relationship. Joe lives five houses down from Zoe. He describes her as "an incredible young person with the biggest heart."Their neighbors have caught on to Zoe's effort, adding items to sell at a bake sale last Saturday, or overpaying and refusing to take their change.Tina says they've been overwhelmed by the response. Like many boys his age, 12-year-old Caleb Anderson wants to be an astronaut when he grows up and has goals to be the first man to visit Mars. And having already been admitted to Georgia Tech, he could be on his way to the Red Planet sooner than you think.According to WXIA-TV and WSB-TV in Atlanta, Caleb's parents have known he was gifted since he was less than a year old. His mother, Claire Anderson, told WSB that he was beginning to mimic her words by the time he was three weeks old. Nine months later, WXIA reports that Caleb was able to use sign language to communicate over 250 words."I'm not really smart," Caleb told CBS News in October. "I just grasp information quickly. So, if I learn quicker, then I get ahead faster."WSB reports that Caleb is currently taking classes at both a local high school and at Chattahoochee Tech, a technical college in suburban Atlanta. In October, Caleb toured Georgia Tech and was later granted admission. He could begin attending classes at the revered Atlanta university as soon as next year.But Caleb has plans beyond college.“I think I am going to go to Mars, and do more school, I think, and try to get my master’s at Georgia Tech,” Caleb told WSB. “Then do an internship with Elon Musk, and then I’ll probably get my PhD at MIT. And then I think I’ll start working at either NASA. Or SpaceX.”Shortly after admission into Georgia Tech, WXIA reports that a representative for The Steve & Marjorie Harvey Foundation — a charitable foundation started by comedian and TV host Steve Harvey — told Caleb that the actor would be paying for his three remaining semesters at Chattahoochee Tech.“He’s kind of always been this way, where you’ll ask these very deep, profound questions, and you don’t expect to see that from a three-year-old,” Caleb's father, Kobi Anderson, told WSB. “That’s kind of been our road, our journey.”“If you want to succeed, you have to do two things. LAKESIDE, Calif. (KGTV) -- Officials with the Lakeside Union School District confirmed the closure of Winter Gardens Elementary School due to a COVID-19 outbreak.In a letter sent to families and school personnel Thursday, LUSD Superintendent Dr. Andy Johnsen acknowledged that “there have been 12 positive cases identified at Winter Gardens over the last two weeks” and because of the outbreak, the campus on 8501 Pueblo Rd. would be closed for 15 days starting Dec. 4.The school’s Extended School Services (ESS) will also be shut down.Dr. Johnsen said they closed the school Friday as, "all of the other cases we've had up until this point no other person has been identified as a close contact."Winter Gardens Elementary will proceed with distance learning from Dec. 4-18, according to Dr. Johnsen. The initial plan is to reopen the campus for in-person learning on Jan. 4.Dr. Johnsen noted that “staff members and students that may have come into close contact with the positive individuals have been directly contacted by San Diego County Public Health with further instructions.”“Because of how COVID-19 spreads, public health officials have indicated that all of us should consider ourselves as being potentially exposed,” Dr. Johnsen said in the letter.Dr. Johnsen said the infections likely originated off-campus. A La Jolla Immunologist agreed with that theory, saying on the molecular level adults are more likely to pass the virus to each other and not get it from children.Dr. Johnsen said the 12 infections is out of 308 students and staff combined. He said public health officials recommend closing schools when they reach a 5% infection threshold.He said students and staff were wearing masks, socially distant and the district hired cleaning staff to sanitize high touch points each hour and classrooms overnight. When the school reopens, Dr. Johnsen said they will not make any changes to their protocol, adding the district and public health officials support the procedures they have in place.Johnsen would not identify how many students and staff each were infected, due to privacy laws. 2115

LAS VEGAS (AP) — Evel Knievel’s son is on a collision course with the Walt Disney Co. and Pixar over a movie daredevil character named Duke Caboom. A federal trademark infringement lawsuit filed in Las Vegas accuses the moviemaker of improperly basing the “Toy Story 4” character on Knievel. Las Vegas-based K and K Promotions accuses Disney-owned Pixar of intentionally modeling the Caboom character, voiced by Keanu Reeves in the movie, after Knievel — although Knievel’s name is never mentioned.Knievel's famous stunts in the 1960s and ‘70s included motorcycle jumps over the Caesars Palace fountain in Las Vegas and a rocket shot into Snake River Canyon in Idaho. The Walt Disney Co. says it will defend itself from what it calls Knievel's meritless claims.“Evel Knievel did not thrill millions around the world, break his bones and spill his blood just so Disney could make a bunch of money,” Kelly Knievel said in a statement announcing the lawsuit.Knievel was seriously injured many times during more than 75 motorcycle jumps.
