FALLBROOK (CNS) - The San Diego County Sheriff's Department Saturday released the name of the man who was shot after he allegedly attacked a deputy with a baseball bat early Friday morning.The Sheriff's Department says a deputy was investigating reports of unprovoked assaults with a bat when he found himself under the same kind of attack from 30-year-old Jesus Cirilo Rodriguez.The deputy was sitting in an unmarked car around 4:30 a.m. Friday in the area of Reche and Ranger roads in Fallbrook when the attack happened, sheriff's Lt. Rich Williams said. Deputies had received three reports of unprovoked baseball bat attacks near the area in the last two days -- one on Wednesday evening and two on Thursday evening -- and were conducting surveillance, Williams said.RELATED: Bat-wielding man shot by sheriff's deputyDuring the surveillance, a man -- suspected to be Rodriguez -- walked up and smashed the window of the deputy's vehicle, shattering glass over the interior and prompting the deputy to open fire in self-defense, Williams said.The deputy shot the suspect multiple times, though the suspect was expected to survive.Rodriguez was being held under guard at a local hospital on suspicion of assault of a peace officer with a deadly weapon while his wounds were being treated, and his bail was set at 0,000. FAIRFIELD, Calif. – Police officers in Northern California stepped up to help some children cool off on a hot summer day.The Fairfield Police Department says some of its officers were responding to an area apartment complex when they noticed several kids playing outside in the heat.Unfortunately, police say the youngsters weren’t able to enjoy the community’s pool because of COVID-19 restrictions.Seeing this was no way to spend a hot summer afternoon, police say they came up with a plan to use their own money to purchase dozens of water guns and buckets of water balloons for the kids.When police returned, a water fight began, and the officers got in on the fun.“The ensuing water fight left a lot of soaked uniforms and plenty of smiling faces,” wrote police.The department posted video and photos of the interaction on social media, saying that their community is stronger together.“Transparency and trust in our community with regards to how we protect and serve you is our top priority – we understand that the more we are able to open our doors to you on all levels, the more we can connect, communicate, and work together,” wrote the department. 1166

(KGTV) -- Police in Escondido are joining law enforcement throughout the state in cracking down on distracted driving throughout April.Throughout the month, the city is deploying extra traffic officers thanks to grant-funded resources. Violators will be stopped and cited with fines set at 2 for first-time offenders.On April 5 and April 13, law enforcement officials all over the state are set to step up distracted driving enforcement.According to authorities, officers have issued hundreds of thousands of citations over the past three years to those texting or calling while driving.Recent legislation has even gone as far as to make it illegal to use a smartphone’s apps while driving."California’s distracted driving laws have been saving lives for a decade now,” said former State Senator Joe Simitian, who authored the state’s hands-free and no-texting laws. “Every day, somewhere in California, someone is sitting down to dinner with their family who wouldn't have made it through the day without these laws on the books. That’s tremendously gratifying.”Data from 2017 shows that nearly 22,000 were involved in distracted driving crashes throughout California.“Traffic safety has consistently been a top priority in Escondido,” said Chief Craig Carter. “If our enforcement and education campaign to eliminate distracted driving saves even one life, I would consider that a success.” 1420

ENCINITAS, Calif. (KGTV) - A dog owner is sharing her story after she says a neutering procedure turned into a month-long nightmare.On the morning of February 21st, Brigitte Yvon dropped off 2-year-old Yellow Lab Davie at her veterinarian in Encinitas to be neutered. Hours later, she got a call saying everything went well and she picked up her dog early that afternoon. For the next nine days, Yvon tended to him. Davie kept whimpering and trying to get at his back, but Yvon thought it was part of the recovery from the neutering. Yvon then noticed something on Davie's back."Fur was matted. Skin was raw and bleeding in places," said Yvon.She used a clipper and found more of the same under the fur. She took him to another vet, who shaved his back to reveal third-degree burns across his back. "They told me to prepare for what I was about to see. I was horrified and devastated," said Yvon.Yvon brought photos to the original veterinarian."He did apologize and admit responsibility," said Yvon. She says he didn't go into detail, but pointed to saline bags used to warm up and regulate body temperature during and after the procedure. Yvon says he agreed to pay for treatment. Yvon says the veterinarian has since filed a claim with his insurer.For Davie, the treatment has included surgery and several rounds of antibiotics. For Yvon, there have been plenty of sleepless nights. She has this message for other pet owners: Ask questions and educate yourself on the most basic of procedures.Yvon asked us not use the name of the vet, because her only goal is to increase awareness of the risks. Experts suggest asking your veterinarian how they warm up animals when anesthesia is used. Devices like warming blankets with temperature alarms are considered safer.The veterinarian who performed the procedure issued the following statement: "While I would like to respond with an accurate account of what transpired, it is my professional responsibility to respect client confidentiality. When this client called with a concern I responded immediately. I worked with her to identify how to move forward with his healing. We provided treatment for the wound and care for the pet and consulted with specialists and offered the best options, and the client was not charged. We understand that pets are part of the family. We want to make sure that our clients receive the highest level of care available. We are truly glad to hear that Davie is doing well and expected to have a full recovery and hope he has a long and happy life." 2539
