LA JOLLA, Calif. (KGTV) - University of California San Diego Police are investigating threats of violence to the campus during finals week. The generalized, non-specific threats were written on three women’s bathroom doors in Geisel Library, officials said. Police were notified about the threats Sunday night and Monday afternoon, according to University Police Chief David S. Rose. “Our University takes every threat of violence extremely seriously and the UC San Diego Police Department has responded and is investigating,” Rose said. Officers interviewed potential witnesses and are reviewing video to identity the person or persons responsible for the postings. UC San Diego officials consulted with police, the Behavioral Threat Team, local and federal law enforcement, and a threat assessment expert before deciding to continue with its regular finals week schedule, Rose said. LAS VEGAS - From the counting room to the courtroom. That's where things are headed as Nevada has become center stage for a legal showdown.The Trump campaign and the Nevada Republican Party are likely to keep knocking on Nevada courthouse doors as our state is poised to become a pawn in a legal chess game surrounding election results and how votes are counted."The Trump campaign hasn't been shy about sort of foreshadowing this stream of lawsuits," said UNLV associate professor of Political Science Rebecca Gill. "And indeed, they started well before Election Day as well."But in one Nevada case, it appears both sides may have come to an agreement to avoid a court battle.Thursday, a proposed settlement in a pending case before the Nevada Supreme Court.On election night, in a unanimous vote, the state's high court rejected an emergency appeal by the Trump campaign and state Republican party that sought to stop counting mail ballots in Clark County. The appeal was from an earlier loss in a lower court where the GOP raised concerns about observing ballot processing and electronic signature verification, with the implication of potential for fraud."But unfortunately for the Trump campaign, there's really no evidence of widespread voter fraud at all, regardless of what type of voting mechanism is used," said Professor Gill. "Mainly because, among other things, voter fraud is a felony. And the return on investment is very low because you would have to risk a felony in order to have an absolutely small chance of changing any outcome, particularly in a presidential election."The state Supreme Court wouldn't stop the count, but agreed to hear an expedited appeal. Then, Thursday afternoon, the appellants asked for an extra week, citing a pending settlement of the case. That after the Clark County Registrar agreed to make all tables where the ballot duplication process occurs visible to public observers.Once everyone signs off, the appeal will be dismissed.If any issues arise, a decision on how to proceed will come no later than Nov. 11 at 4 p.m.In the meantime, Clark County can continue counting mail ballots. Those postmarked by election day that arrives by Nov. 10 must be counted by Nov. 12.In another lawsuit, the Trump campaign and Nevada GOP sued Clark County to force officials to release records including copies of every registered voter's signature. That likely indicates a potential challenge over signature matches of what's on file versus on the actual ballot.A District Court judge denied that request and said most of the other requested records didn’t have to be produced until Nov. 20, after county officials finish counting votes.Of course, the specter of a recount demand looms large depending on how narrow the margin of votes ultimately is. Recounts are done to confirm accuracy, check for mistakes and settle fraud claims.The most infamous recount in U.S. history was Bush vs. Gore in 2000 in Florida."But I think it's important to remember that what happened in Florida in 2000," explains Professor Gill. " It was a very unusual confluence of events that led to a situation where there was a real technical difficulty with the actual mechanics of voting in Florida. And that was coupled with this extremely small difference in the vote counts."In Nevada, we have no rules that would trigger an automatic recount. The candidate defeated in an initial vote count can ask for a recount if they deposit estimated costs of the effort. And the candidate gets reimbursed if the recount changes the race’s outcome.President Trump has threatened to take his election concerns to the United States Supreme Court."But I think if you couple these wider vote margins with the fact that there isn't this one really solid reason to be concerned with the operation of the electoral system," said Professor Gill. "Then I think that it's probably unlikely that anything that would happen in the courts would have that outcome that the Trump campaign is probably looking for."Legal experts say the way the nation's high court would most likely be brought in, would be to review a specific challenge to ballots in a tight race in a state that could tip the balance in the election.Nevada, with its six electoral votes, could be that state. LAS VEGAS — Internet juggernaut Amazon is flourishing during the COVID-19 pandemic as people turn to online shopping for supplies. But, Nevada authorities are investigating the company after insiders say employees are getting sick and management is slow with revealing details.In a massive, 2.4 million square foot facility near Sloan and Tropical Parkway in Las Vegas, hundreds of Amazon employees file in and help the behemoth internet company deliver everything from above ground swimming pools to toothbrushes.In a public relations videoes, Amazon has touted the steps the company is taking to combat the spread of COVID-19. The precautions include employee temperature checks, mandatory mask-wearing, routine building cleaning, and social distancing for employees.But several Amazon employees are speaking out about their safety."Some people aren't even following [those precautions], and furthermore, in the break room, there's a lot of people, and it's hard for us not to come into contact with each other because we are right next to each other," said one insider who spoke on a condition of anonymity.The same insider fears retaliation for revealing details.She believes the company, which brought in about 0 billion in 2019, has been slow to reveal new cases of COVID-19 among Amazon employees."We were concerned already because we are in a warehouse, and there are so many people and we don't know where [the new cases] are coming from or who has [COVID-19]," she said.The trouble started in March when word began to spread among employees of possible illness. At the time, the company allowed for unlimited, unpaid time off for employees.The insider says management otherwise downplayed the presence of the illness among employees."Pretty much don't worry about it, and they told us it wasn't in our warehouse, it was in another, and it's all just a rumor," she said.But as weeks went by, the company acknowledged cases among employees.An Amazon spokesperson confirmed a case at a "North Las Vegas facility" on April 24.The company operates several large warehouses scattered around Southern Nevada, and insiders say concerns spread even more among employees about the exact location of the confirmed case.In fact, an internal email revealed that the company's public relations team deemed local news reports about the situation as "inaccurate," adding the positive case was at a facility internally dubbed "LAS 2" and at the time, no reported cases at the facility named "LAS 7."The email instructed employees to disregard news stories, and management would "hopefully report new cases before it hits the news.""When we had the second confirmed case, there was one person in management — I'm not sure of his position — but they had made a comment that, 'Well, by now you all should be immune to it. If you've been exposed to it, so you have nothing to worry about," the Amazon insider said.The situation went downhill, according to the Amazon insider.In an internal communication sent on May 5, Amazon revealed that an employee at the "LAS 7" facility had tested positive for COVID-19 on April 30. The email said that the employee was present at the facility for several weeks prior to testing positive.The company told employees the facility had been "deep cleaned" in accordance with the U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention guidelines."It's hard to say you are sanitizing the place, which is not sanitized, by using it every day, the whole time we're there," the Amazon insider said. LEE COUNTY, Fla. - Kids are heading back to school, and in order to make sure they're successful in the classroom, doctors say their success is dependent on the amount of sleep they're getting.According to Dr. Jose Colon, a sleep specialist with Lee Health in Florida, it's important to make sure kids not only get the proper amount of sleep every night, but making sure they get into a routine a few days before they're back at school."If we're sleeping in for a longer period of time, which we commonly do sometimes during the summer, we're delaying the exposure to the sunlight and that alters your own natural melatonin, making it so that you have this predisposition towards staying up later," Colon says.He also says set a specific wake up time for kids no later than a few days before they start school. In order to help them get to bed earlier, help them get relaxed by avoiding electronics with LED light."You don't have to walk around the dark with your eyes closed, but doing what you can to minimize artificial lights is going to help your melatonin naturally come out," he says.If kids can't avoid technology, Colon says there's a setting to lower the LED light on most devices. Also, taking a warm bath at night can help kids get to sleep, according to Colon. He says the body will become naturally warmer, but the temperature will drop after leaving the tub. That drop in temperature will help cool the body, which ultimately helps with sleep.He also says adding a few drops of lavender in the bath can help."Lavender oil has been shown to decrease cortisol, which is our stress hormone, and it's helpful for sleep," he says.Still not sleeping? Colon says there are a few at home remedies to try."Melatonin has been studied in children with ADHD, Autism, neurodevelopment disabilities and even with people with migraines and it's been shown to be safe and effective," he says.Colon says to purchase the melatonin with a "GNC" label.
