Six White House officials have violated the Hatch Act, according to a letter from the Office of the Special Counsel to Citizens for Responsibility and Ethics in Washington Executive Director Noah Bookbinder.The six officials are White House principal deputy press secretary Raj Shah, White House deputy director of communications Jessica Ditto, executive assistant to the President Madeleine Westerhout, former special assistant to the President and director of media affairs Helen Aguirre Ferré, press secretary for the Vice President Alyssa Farah and Office of Management and Budget deputy communications Director Jacob Wood.The Hatch Act limits certain political activities of federal employees in an attempt to prevent the federal government from affecting elections or operating in a partisan manner. This includes sending partisan messages from social media accounts used for official government business.All six violated the Hatch Act by using their Twitter accounts, which they use for official purposes, to tweet messages considered partisan by OSC. Four of the six tweeted messages that included "#MAGA" or the slogan "Make America Great Again!" Shah tweeted a message from his account citing research from the Republican National Committee. Ditto retweeted Shah's message with RNC research.OSC found that these messages violated the Hatch Act because they use the political slogan of a current candidate, President Donald Trump, who has announced that he will be running for re-election in 2020. Tweeting those slogans from an account used for official purposes as a federal employee is considered political activity, the letter states. In Shah's and Ditto's cases, they highlighted research conducted by a political party, which OSC considered engaging in prohibited political activity.OSC issued warning letters to all six officials and warned that further engagement in behavior considered to be "prohibited political activity while employed in a position covered by the Hatch Act" will be considered "a willful and knowing violation of the law, which could result in further action," the letter states.OSC does not comment on open or closed Hatch Act investigations but confirmed to CNN that the letter to Bookbinder was authentic. CREW, the organization Bookbinder runs, submitted Hatch Act complaints to OSC about 10 White House officials that were addressed in the letter. The White House did not immediately respond to a request for comment from CNN.The Office of the Special Counsel enforces the Hatch Act. The act, however, is a guideline, so violations are not considered crimes. Punishment can range from a simple reprimand to the loss of a job.But OSC has little power to discipline senior White House appointees. If a senior White House official appointed by the President is found in violation of the Hatch Act, and OSC determines disciplinary action is required, "OSC can only send a report to the President alerting him of the violation," said Zachary Kurz, communications director for the Office of the Special Counsel. Several United States government agencies issued an alert on Friday to financial institutions about a North Korea-backed hacking group known as the BeagleBoyz.In a joint statement, the Federal Bureau of Investigation, Cybersecurity and Infrastructure Security Agency (CISA), Department of the Treasury, and the U.S. Cyber Command (USCYBERCOM) said the hackers steal money through fraudulent bank transfers and ATM cashouts throughout several countries, including the United States."Since February 2020, North Korea has resumed targeting banks in multiple countries to initiate fraudulent international money transfers and ATM cashouts," the agencies said in the release. "The recent resurgence follows a lull in bank targeting since late 2019. This advisory provides an overview of North Korea’s extensive, global cyber-enabled bank robbery scheme, a short profile of the group responsible for this activity, in-depth technical analysis, and detection and mitigation recommendations to counter this ongoing threat to the Financial Services sector."Active since 2014, the group stole million from the Bank of Bangladesh in 2016, and were responsible for the FastCash ATM attacks in 2018, the agencies said.The group has attempted to steal nearly billion since at least 2015, the alert said."Any BeagleBoyz robbery directed at one bank implicates many other financial services firms in both the theft and the flow of illicit funds back to North Korea," the alert stated.According to the warning, the hackers have also targeted financial institutions in Argentina, Chile, India, Japan, Mexico, South Korea, and Spain. 1629

ST LUCIE COUNTY, Fla. — They’re not giving up until they get answers.On Wednesday, glioblastoma patients and families who have had loved ones with the deadly brain cancer in St. Lucie County, met with officials from the Florida Department of Health in St. Lucie County.READ MORE: St. Lucie County Glioblastoma CoverageIt was their first time meeting together since the health department revealed there is not a high number of glioblastoma cases in the county.That was determined after a five-week review of the state’s cancer registry from 1996 to 2015. The research focused on looking at the demographics of the area to determine how many new cases are to be expected each year in the county.Health officials determined St. Lucie County should see an average of 10 cases per year.The registry does not, however, have data yet for 2016 or 2017.Scripps station WPTV in West Palm Beach collected information from viewers who have glioblastoma or know of someone with glioblastoma in St. Lucie County to help provide some data for those two years.For now, 2016 appears to have at least 15 cases diagnosed in St. Lucie County, according to WPTV.  In 2017, it appears there were 11 cases from people who came forward with their information.The information is not medically verified, but has been given to the department of health in St. Lucie County by WPTV’s Meghan McRoberts to further investigate.The Health department said though the 2016 and 2017 numbers might be higher than the average of 10 cases, there is not a set formula for what number would be considered ’too high'. It would take further research.People like Lenny Schelin, Jr. who are battling glioblastoma, were glad to hear the health department is still going to look into the local glioblastoma cases, regardless of the state data showing there is not a high local rate of the cancer.“There’s still a lot of unknowns,” Schelin, Jr. said. He said he knows the number from the state’s cancer registry has some potential flaws. For example, it does not account for people who lived in St. Lucie County but were diagnosed with glioblastoma out of state.“Too many people moved. Too many people get diagnosed somewhere else. Just too many variables,” Schelin, Jr. said.The Florida Department of Health in St. Lucie County Administrator Clint Sperber, also noted the information from the state’s cancer registry does not look at specific addresses to evaluate exactly how close together the patients live.That’s an issue to Kim Hart, whose mother is battling the disease.“Finding out a younger person is going through it a mile from us… it’s unfair,” Hart said. Other patients’ families said some cases are on the same block and street.Kevin Perry, Jr.’s dad is also battling GBM.“They’re not here. They’re not looking at, 'Oh, five people within a small little area.'
