A major earthquake Tuesday night struck the territory of New Caledonia, sparking tsunami alerts. The earthquake had a preliminary magnitude of 7.5 and rattled the area just after 8 p.m., according to the United States Geological Survey. The quake struck just over 100 miles east southeast of Tadine, New Caledonia. According to the USGS, waves between three and nine feet above the tide level are possible along some coasts of New Caledonia and Vanuatu. A group of 14 mayors from across the U.S. are calling for federal law enforcement and military to stop their deployment to cities in response to protests."We urge you to take immediate action to withdraw your forces and agree to no further unilateral deployments in U.S. cities," said the mayors' letter to Attorney General William Barr and Homeland Security Chad Wolf.The letter was signed by the mayors of Denver, Portland, Seattle, Atlanta, Chicago, Washington D.C., Kansas City, Boston, Philadelphia, Los Angeles, San Jose, Oakland, Tucson and Sacramento.D.C. A group of Las Vegas shooting survivors is coming together to send a very special gift to Jason Aldean. Their goal is to use the gift to ask Aldean to come back to Las Vegas to finish his concert that was tragically interrupted the night of the mass shooting.Tiffany Thomas created a Facebook group called “58 Survivors 1 Last Set." Survivors of the shooting quickly learned about the group and the online community chatted about their stories of that infamous night.“After it happened, all I could think about was Jason Aldean,” said Thomas. “I kept thinking like he was up there, he was on that stage, he was singing for us.”Through the Facebook group, Tiffany met another survivor named Gina McKin. The women came up with the idea to make a Shutterfly book to send to Aldean.McKin took charge of the book and asked everyone to send their favorite pictures of the night before the shooting rang out.The book ended up being 91 pages long to represent Route 91.In the book, McKin dedicated different pages to victims and survivors. Some people wrote messages to Aldean.The 0 book took months to finalize.The group of women are sending the book to Aldean along with a few other special items.They are using the gift to ask Jason Aldean to come back to Las Vegas and finish his set. Their idea is to open the concert up to survivors and victims and families of the victims.“It would just be so bonding and so amazing and so emotional and I think so healing.”Scripps station KTNV in Las Vegas was in touch with Jason Aldean’s communications team about the book.KTNV was told they are excited to see the book but cannot officially comment on if Aldean will be back to perform just yet.The women are putting the package in the mail this week. “I hope that when he opens it, he just sees that we love him and that we know what he’s going through,” McKin said. 1889

A former waitress who stole money from a Mexican restaurant in Tucson more than 20 years ago is trying to make things right, KTAR reports.She sent a letter to El Charro Café along with ,000 in cash last weekend. She wrote that she had worked there in the 1990s and had stolen money from the restaurant.“One of the waiters I worked with had encouraged me to ‘forget’ to ring in a few drinks a shift and pocket the cash. And for some stupid reason, I did it,” the woman wrote.She only identified herself as “a thankful former employee” and said she had worked there while attending the University of Arizona.The women went on to say she pocketed a few hundred dollars in total and was fired “before it could amount to more.”“It’s been more than 20 years, but I still carry great remorse,” she wrote.Ray Flores, president of El Charro, said the letter deeply moved his family.Flores and his family are still planning what they’ll do with the ,000. 956

A Florida man was charged with murder after detectives connected him to the suspicious death of his girlfriend.The investigation began Oct. 15 when Sarasota County deputies were called to a vehicle fire along I-75 in Osprey. When deputies arrived, they found a minivan with a deceased female inside.The driver, 34-year-old Michael Clark, told deputies he didn’t know how the fire began, how the female died or how he got to Sarasota.State investigators with the Bureau of Fire and Arson Investigations determined the minivan was intentionally set on fire. They found a gas can inside the minivan and a lighter nearby.Further investigation by the Medical Examiner’s Office determined the victim’s cause of death was homicide caused by blunt force trauma.The investigation revealed that Clark drove his minivan to meet the victim at work on Oct. 14. A witness saw the two get into an argument. During which time, Clark was seen confronting the victim and the victim pushed him away. Clark then put the victim in a headlock, according to the arrest affidavit. The victim was last seen alive walking with Clark towards his minivan, her car never left the parking lot.Detectives determined Clark beat the victim to death before placing her in the back of the minivan, driving southbound along I-75, and eventually setting the vehicle on fire with the intent of destroying all evidence of his crimes. At the time of the incident, personnel seized Clark’s clothing for investigation and recovered a small amount of cocaine. He was transported to the hospital and later released while the investigation continued.On Thursday, Sarasota County detectives working in partnership with the Hillsborough County Sheriff's Office executed an arrest warrant and search warrant at Clark’s home.He was taken into custody and booked into the Orient Road Jail in Tampa. Sarasota County detectives charged Clark with Murder, Arson, Tampering with Evidence, and Possession of Cocaine. He remains in custody without bond.The victim was 34-year-old Kristen Kelley, Clark’s girlfriend of several years. The couple had three children in common. 2170
