According to CHP, the shooting happened on I-8 near Waring Road around 8:30 p.m. CHP says an unknown vehicle began firing rounds at the victim. SAN DIEGO (KGTV) - As the biotech industry grows in San Diego, many companies are hiring, offering people a chance at high-paying jobs in an emerging field."The jobs that are in demand are the ones most difficult to fill," says Lisa Bozinovic, Executive Director of the Biocom Institute, a trade association for the industry in California.According to Biocom's most recent survey of the companies across the state, 88 percent say they plan to expand and hire in the next 12 months. The average salary is 7,000."They need people skilled in IT, HR, administration, accounting, sales," Bozinovic says. "We're lucky that San Diego has that life-science industry and we have that opportunity."Ashley Reynolds, who works in Regulatory Affairs at Tandem Diabetes, says programs like these helped her find a place in the industry, even though she had no interest in lab work."There's no one way to do something," she says.Reynolds got a bachelor's degree in biology from UC Riverside and a master's degree in regulatory affairs at San Diego State. She also went to Cal State San Marcos for a lab tech certificate. She says it was a lot of work, but it's been worth it in the long run."You make a path to get there and don't even worry about all the other obstacles in your way," she says. "If you're determined to get there, you will."That's the message Bozinovic has as well. It may take returning to school, but it's an investment in your long-term future."For ,000, you can get a four year degree and slide right into a job," she says of the program at MiraCosta. And, remember, you don't always need a full four year degree.Bozinovic and Reynolds both say someone looking to make a change should take some time to learn about the industry first, and see what part of it interests them. The best way to do that is to go to career fairs or science expos and talk to people at the booths. There are also trade associations and professional groups to join, even if you're still looking for a job."Whatever you put into it is what you'll get out of it," says Reynolds.Anyone interested in a career change can get connected in San Diego through the San Diego Biotechnology Network. SAN DIEGO (KGTV) -- Basic needs can be challenging to meet for homeless families or those living in shelters. As schools resume for students, distance learning can be even harder. Father Joes Villages is helping homeless students thrive this school year."We work with a population that is customarily at a disadvantage and has greater challenges, especially during these times of the pandemic," says Deacon Jim Vargas.It's been a challenge for the kids who aren't able to go to school. "In a sense, distance learning has isolated them even more," says Jennifer Ryan with the Therapeutic Children's Center at Father Joe's Villages."They don't have the financial resources, technological resources, other resources like those families that have homes," adds Vargas.The Therapeutic Children's Center provides a space for students to do their work."We have about 100 children that are in school. That's kindergarten all the way to 17-year-olds," says Ryan.Laptops and tablets are usually given to students by their schools. Father Joe's Villages makes sure they have access to the internet, school supplies, and more.Deacon Vargas says without the right intervention, these students are likely to repeat a grade or worse. "We know statistically that they are four times more likely to be homeless in adulthood."Father Joe's Villages has launched a new distance learning initiative to continue to provide resources to students. 1430

SAN DIEGO (KGTV) — Consumer spending in San Diego was down nearly .3 billion between February and April 2020, showing just how badly the COVID-19 pandemic crippled the local economy.Since stay-at-home orders began in March, SANDAG says taxable sales in the region dropped from an average of .3 billion to billion in April.The largest losses in the region were seen at apparel stores (an 83% decrease in sales) and restaurants (down 67%).On the other side, big-box retailers like Costco, Target, and Walmart have fared well, SANDAG says. Grocery stores and pharmacy, though, were actually down 10% in taxable sales. Home improvement sales were also up, likely due to stimulus checks, SANDAG adds."It is interesting to learn that grocery stores and pharmacy sales are actually down by 10%, while home improvement sales have spiked," said SANDAG Chief Economist Ray Major. "We can assume that during the pandemic, people had more time to work on outdoor landscaping, gardens, and other home beautification projects. Plant seed companies also saw increases-- nearly four times their average sales."Consumer spending among online retailers like Amazon increased 35% as well.SANDAG's report estimates that consumer spending will continue to be down through August, though slightly less each month. 1306

SAN DIEGO (KGTV) - Civil right activists and lawyers are hoping the court system can force San Diego County law enforcement agencies to change the way they deal with protests.On Thursday, a group of lawyers announced a half-dozen claims and lawsuits against the La Mesa Police Department, San Diego Police Department and the San Diego County Sheriff's Department for what they call unnecessary use of force during recent protests.Dante Pride represents four of the claimants, including Leslie Furcron, the woman hit in the head by a bean bag round fired during a protest outside La Mesa police headquarters on May 30.Pride said Furcron suffered multiple fractures in her face, has no vision in her left eye, has problems walking, has problems remembering, and difficulty with balance.RELATED: Woman shot with bean bag round in the face during La Mesa protest makes public statement"All because she decided to come out, as she is entitled to do, and protest," said Pride.Pride’s other clients have injuries ranging from broken fingers to severe cuts and contusions from being hit by what officers call "less lethal" rounds."The manner in which these things were used, shot indiscriminately into crowds, these are lethal methods being used," said Pride.Other claims stem from protests across the city in the days that followed.Gerald Singleton said his two clients are the "epitome" of peaceful protesters, who were simply standing in the crowd when they were hit by what he calls "rubber bullets.""Anybody who embraces this movement is, unfortunately, under the current police culture, viewed as an enemy, and they're treated accordingly,” Singleton said.RELATED: La Mesa woman hospitalized following protests, family saysThe claims ask for monetary damages to cover medical expenses.
