(KGTV) - Chula Vista neighbors are dealing with the aftermath of a San Diego Gas and Electric equipment malfunction that triggered a power outage and caused their homes to smoke.Residents on Country Club Circle told 10News about the outage Saturday night. Electricity was restored and everything seemed fine, they said, but they woke up to sparked outlets, smoke and fire Sunday morning.“Every single room sounded like someone came in with gunshots,” said Mona Hernandez. “My girls got up screaming ‘fire’ in one of the rooms and I thought they were on fire. I feared they were actually on fire until I got to see them.”SDG&E said the equipment failure involved a transformer and affected more than 400 homes in the area.One woman said she was concerned about her air conditioning and heating working for her son.“He’s disabled. We need the heater to use. He's going to have open brain surgery next week. CHULA VISTA (KGTV) -- A new support group in the South Bay hopes to fill a gap, serving children whose loved ones have been diagnosed with cancer. The group was created by siblings Sophia and Vincent Epley, ages 13 and 11. Last year the two found themselves facing a heartbreaking reality when both parents were diagnosed with cancer. Sophia and Vincent wanted to create a safe place where kids can ask questions and meet others going through similar situations. The Children and Family Cancer Support Group is led by clinical social worker Cara Fairfax and is open to all families.Details: 613

(KGTV) -- Four Eastlake Middle School students were arrested Wednesday after reportedly bringing an “explosive device on campus.” According to the Chula Vista Police, school resource officers with the department were called to the school after receiving reports of an explosive device found on campus. After arriving, officers learned that the device had already been detonated. No students were harmed and no property damaged, police say. CHULA VISTA (CNS) - A Tijuana police officer who allegedly took part in a plot to steal more than million from a Chula Vista home, which he and other defendants believed was a stash house containing drug money, was ordered Monday to stand trial on two conspiracy charges.Jesus Estrada Torres, 35, is accused of planning with five other men to rob the home in late January, after an undercover FBI agent told them a shipment of money would be delivered to the residence, according to testimony at the defendant's preliminary hearing.A fellow officer, Marco Quijas-Castillo, 27, pleaded guilty earlier this year to conspiracy to commit robbery and faces two years in state prison. CHULA VISTA, Calif. (KGTV) -- Police are investigating after a Christopher Columbus statue was vandalized in Chula Vista Sunday. According to police, officers were called to Discovery Park around noon after neighbors reported that someone poured red paint over the statue. When officers arrived they also found the words “genocide” and “FU” spray painted onto the figure. A brass plaque that used to be attached to the statue was also missing. Police say they believe the vandalism happened overnight Saturday. Crews from the city responded quickly to clean the statue.As of Sunday afternoon, police say they don't have a suspect description, but added that the investigation is ongoing. 696
