SAN DIEGO (KGTV) — Twin brothers were arrested in Mexico this week and turned over to U.S. border authorities in connection with a 2013 murder in East San Diego.Anibal and Edward Avila, both 27, were arrested on Friday and charged with the murder of Rafal Robles, 34, five years ago, according to San Diego Police.Police say Robles and another man were found suffering from gunshot wounds in an alley near the 4000 block of 39th Street in the Cooridor neighborhood just before 3 p.m. on April 11, 2013. SAN DIEGO (KGTV) -- A woman was arrested Monday afternoon after police say she stole a vehicle with two children inside.Police say Rodney Cole left his 3-year-old son and 8-year-old daughter in his car with the engine and air conditioner running around noon on the 200 block of Euclid Avenue.After he went into a business, a witness reported seeing a woman, later identified as Leslie Saenz, get into the car and drive away with the children inside.Monday night Cole explained the terrifying ordeal to 10News.His 8-year-old daughter, Malaiha, told police she was able to call the police and tell dispatchers that she and her brother Jackson had been kidnapped. "They said, '911 whats your emergency?' and I said, 'me and my little brother got kidnapped,'" Malaiha said. "and (police) said, 'where are you and what can you see?' and I said, 'signs for the Mexico border.'""(The woman) tried to take the phone away from me but I moved away from her, and she said, 'give it to me, or I’m going to drive in circles and take this car and crash into the freeway wall.'"That's when she gave the phone to the woman, but the police acted quickly.  Roughly 30 minutes later after the car was stolen, Border Patrol detained the woman as she was trying to cross the border into Mexico.  Police have since taken Saenz into custody.Cole told 10News he bought the phone for the kids a few months ago, but it's not an activated line. He taught Malaiha how to call 911 on the phone, in case of emergencies. "I'm very proud of her," he said. 1616

SAN DIEGO (KGTV) - The Padres utilized the team's newly-expanded protective netting for the first time Friday afternoon while hosting a high school baseball game between La Costa Canyon and Vista.The net now extends beyond both dugouts, stretching from section 115 down the left field line to section 116 down the right field line.  Most of the net stretches 24 feet high, before tapering.  Netting will also be added above the dugouts and the wall along the warning track.In a statement revealing the details of the changes, Padres Executive Chairman Ron Fowler and General Partner Peter Seidler said, "We feel the new design drastically improves the safety of our patrons, while the state-of-the-art materials will have a minimal effect on the fan experience as it pertains to the view of the field and sightlines of our ballpark."10News spoke with several fans at Petco Park Friday. While all said they understood and appreciated the safety concerns, not all of them like the change. "I would probably lean toward keeping it the way it was," said Mark Stephens, a Padres ticket plan holder. "Stephens expressed concern that the netting could be an obstruction to the view from some seating locations. He also worries that the netting will reduce the opportunities for fans in those sections to catch foul balls, which is a reason many people choose to sit in the areas behind and just past the dugouts. Stephens believes fans should be paying more attention to the action on the field, so they can see a ball coming their way. "My personal feeling is that people could avoid 85% of the problem if they just watch the game."Another fan, Brian Beaumont, agrees, saying too many people at games are distracted. "The netting might be a sign of the phone age. The smart phone and the not-so-smart fan."The Padres are one of several teams who have extending their netting this off-season.  It follows an incident last September at Yankee Stadium when a foul ball hit a one-year-old girl in the head. She suffered several broken bones and could have permanent damage from the impact.In a similar incident last season, a man in Chicago, Peter Loos, was hit squarely in the eye by a foul ball while watching a game at Wrigley Field. SAN DIEGO (KGTV) — Veterinarians with the San Diego Humane Society say too many pets are packing on extra pounds.The shelter sees overweight pets every day and recently received a 26-pound cat named Angelo; his family could no longer care for him. "Even though a lot of people may perceive him to be cute or funny, for us it's alarming to see an animal this size," said Dr. Danielle Clem, Hospital Director for the San Diego Campus.Overweight pets like Angelo are at risk for health complications like diabetes and severe arthritis."I really am a firm believer that good pet care starts with what you put in their food dish - and it's as simple as that," said Dr. Clem.Hospital staff put Angelo on a strict diet and began to encourage exercise. But Dr. Clem warns that if your pet needs to lose weight, it should be done under veterinarian supervision. "Cats losing weight too rapidly can actually be very dangerous."While Angelo has already been adopted, SDHS officials invite people to meet other cats during adopt-a-shelter-cat month. 1045
