TAIPEI, Nov. 9 (Xinhua) -- The Kuomintang (KMT) honorary chairman Wu Poh-hsiung Monday said the peaceful cross-Straits development was the "right path", while meeting here with Liang Baohua, secretary of Jiangsu Provincial Committee of the Communist Party of China (CPC).     "Practice is sole criterion for testing truth. The development of cross-Straits ties over the past year has made me strongly feel that it is the right path to seek peaceful development," Wu said. Our visit is to implement the common prospects for peaceful cross-Straits development with pragmatic measures," Liang said.     The CPC and KMT reached an agreement on the common prospects for peaceful cross-Straits development in 2005.

BEIJING, Dec. 16 (Xinhua) -- Top Chinese political advisor Jia Qinglin said here Wednesday that China will strengthen political mutual trust, expand substantial cooperation and promote common development with Belarus.     Jia, chairman of the Chinese People's Political Consultative Conference (CPPCC) National Committee, hailed bilateral ties during a meeting with Vladimir Andreichenko, chairman of the House of Representatives of the National Assembly of Belarus.     He applauded the cooperation with Belarus on politics, economy, culture and international affairs, saying the two countries supported each other on some major issues of common concerns and brought about tangible benefits for the two peoples.     Jia pledged to promote exchanges and cooperation between the CPPCC and Belarussian parliament in a bid to further bilateral ties.     Andreichenko commended China's economic growth and increasingly important role on the international arena, saying that his country and the Belarussian parliament will further cooperation with China.

BEIJING, Dec. 26 (Xinhua) -- China's top legislature ended its five-day bimonthly session Saturday, approving tort liability and island protection laws and an amendment to the renewable energy law.     Wu Bangguo, chairman of the Standing Committee of the National People's Congress (NPC), told the closing meeting that the Tort Law was significant in "protecting civil rights and people's interests, preventing and punishing infringement acts, reducing conflicts and promoting social harmony and stability."     The top legislator said the amendment to the renewable energy law would "greatly promote a healthy and rapid development of the renewable energy sector and adjust energy structure to strengthen the building of an environment-friendly and resource-saving society."     The island protection law would play a key role in protecting islands' eco-system, rationally utilizing natural resources and safeguarding the country's marine rights, Wu said.     The session also examined two reports from the State Council on employment and boosting development of small and medium-sized enterprises.     It also voted to ratify a United Nations protocol to combat human trafficking -- the Protocol to Prevent, Suppress and Punish Trafficking in Persons, Especially Women and Children, supplementing the UN Convention against Transnational Organized Crime.     The session also approved a pact on criminal judicial assistance between China and Malta.     It voted to appoint Han Changfu, former governor of northeastern Jilin Province, as agricultural minister.     The meeting also decided to open the annual plenary session of the NPC on March 5 next year. BEIJING, Nov. 18 (Xinhua) -- Wu Bangguo, chairman of the Standing Committee of the National People's Congress (NPC), China's top legislature, held talks here Wednesday afternoon with Kim Hyong-o, speaker of the National Assembly of the Republic of Korea (ROK).     Wu spoke highly of Sino-ROK relations and the positive role that the two legislatures have played in enhancing bilateral relations.     China attaches importance to its relationship with the ROK and both countries are of great influence in the region, he said, noting that development of the bilateral relations accord with the fundamental interests of the two peoples and is conducive to the regional peace, stability and development. CHRISTCHURCH, New Zealand, Nov. 1 (Xinhua) -- Chinese Vice Premier Li Keqiang on Sunday visited Canterbury University to open the second Confucius Institute in New Zealand.     Li said during the opening ceremony that cultural and educational cooperation are important parts of relations between China and New Zealand.     China has become the largest source of overseas students and the fastest growing source of international tourists to New Zealand, while people in New Zealand are taking a strong interest in studying the Chinese language and getting acquainted with Chinese culture, he said.     The new Confucius Institute, jointly founded by Canterbury University and China's Huazhong Science and Technology University, represents another achievement of the exchanges and cooperation between the two nations, Li said.     He said he hoped the institute would become a link between the two countries in cultural and educational exchanges. He said Christchurch would continue to play a positive role in strengthening the two nations' bilateral friendship and cooperation.     Li arrived in Christchurch after an official visit to Australia. He will travel to Papua New Guinea after his visit to New Zealand.
