TEMECULA, Calif. (KGTV) -- Monday, new details emerged about a fight on the field. The student at the center of it all is from Chula Vista. Cell phone video shows people pushing and shoving each other on the field. The violent scene unfolding in the middle of a soccer tournament in Temecula. A stampede of hundreds of parents and children running from what they thought was an active shooter. Erik Saur shared video in the moments before he grabbed his 9-year-old daughter. You don’t process gotta get out of there," Saur said. The incident happened Sunday at Galway Downs. A video captured the moment the chaos started. 10-year-old boys started fighting when spectators swarmed the field. One of the boys that was hurt was from the Albion Team in Chula Vista. In the midst of the chaos, a man who had a camouflage duffel bag caused hysteria. “He rushes to the sideline and he pulls out the backpack and someone is telling him ‘don’t do it’ they said must have a weapon.”The man was detained by deputies for a short time. Investigators say there was no weapon, but the fear was real. The father of the child injured says his son will be okay. Coaches and parents plan to meet later this evening to discuss safety measures moving forward. Albion issued a statement Tuesday, saying in part they are working closely with the California State Soccer Association and U.S. Soccer to create higher standards and stricter consequence for sideline issues:"As a youth soccer community, we want to check in with all our families after the situation we encountered during the tournament this past weekend. We also want to commend our families for their commitment to excellence as a sideline maintaining sportsmanship and class always. For years, we have witnessed youth sports becoming too emotional on the sidelines, and we have worked to educate our families and bring forth guidelines to ensure: safety, respect, sportsmanship, and class. Unfortunately, this is not the case with every team or club we play against.We will continue to guide our staff and families to always be in control and work toward being the leaders in the industry.After this weekend we are committed to not only holding us to be the best in practice, but are working closely with Cal South and US Soccer to create higher standards and push for stricter consequences for sidelines and issues that cross the line.We appreciate everyone’s support and recognition of the situation; and hope that as a community, as Albion SC, we use this as an opportunity to help improve and change the landscape and support and remind everyone that this is just a game. Summer camps have been among a number of spots that have been known as “super spreaders” of the coronavirus,” locations where dozens or even hundreds of infections have spread.While there is an inherent risk with holding camps amid the coronavirus pandemic, the CDC says with proper precautions, the risk can be minimized.This week, the CDC outlined efforts by four summer camps in Maine held over the summer. The camps combined for more than 1,000 attendees coming from 41 states or territories. The result was a success, with only three known asymptomatic cases of the virus stemming from the camps. Testing played a key role in minimizing the risk. The attendees were tested days before coming to the camp. Of 1,022 attendees, four tested positive, which delayed their arrival. Attendees were also told to isolate in the days leading up to their arrival.Once at the camp, attendees were frequently checked for symptoms. During the camp, 12 people were isolated at times due to presenting symptoms, but all tested negative for the coronavirus. There were also three cases identified during the camps among asymptomatic attendees, two of whom were staffers. The three attendees were isolated for 10 days and not cleared until receiving two negative tests.“Thoughtful and prudent public health practices used during overnight summer camps in Maine reinforces how powerful everyday preventive actions are in reducing and keeping COVID-19 transmission low,” CDC director Robert Redfield. “Despite more than 1,000 campers and staff from nearly every state and seven countries, only three people tested positive for COVID-19 during the camp and no additional campers or staff were known to be infected. The approval of the first COVID-19 vaccines comes amid a critical point in the pandemic.The U.S. has recorded two straight weeks of record high hospitalizations. On Thursday, the country surpassed 17 million total cases of COVID-19 and December is now the deadliest month since the start of the pandemic.Infectious disease expert Dr. Michael Lewis, a retired U.S. Army colonel, worries that Americans may become desensitized to the staggering death totals."It's the 'boy who cried wolf' kind of thing," Lewis said.Lewis recognizes the severity of the virus but is worried about the broader implications of the pandemic.He's worried about the future of children who are attending school virtually and haven't seen their friends for months, the damage to small businesses and their employees who have been affected by stay-at-home orders and the damage to people's physical health due to a drop in routine medical care.Lewis says the number of new prescriptions for conditions like heart disease and diabetes have dropped and that the country is seeing more new cases of advanced cancers."(The pandemic will) make actual death rates go up in the long term, the two- to five-year kinda kind of thing," Lewis said.Lewis is advocating for people to re-evaluate their physical and mental health as the pandemic drags on."We've got to figure out how to break that cycle of stress, and that's a very personal thing you've got to figure out how to take responsibility for yourself," he said.Lewis wants people to focus on healthy lifestyles:m Eating right, exercising and limiting a daily intake of virus-related information. The Big Ten and Pac-12 Conferences officially announced on Tuesday that they've postponed their upcoming 2020-21 college football season, which also includes all fall sports, due to the coronavirus pandemic.Both conferences are keeping the option of playing in the spring a possibility.Pac-12 said in a press release that when conditions improve, they'll consider a return to competition for impacted sports after January 1, 2021.“All of the Pac-12 presidents and chancellors understand the importance of this decision, and the disappointment it will create for our student-athletes, the coaches, support staff, and all of our fans,” said Michael H. Schill, president of the University of Oregon. “Ultimately, our decision was guided by science and a deep commitment to the health and welfare of student-athletes. We certainly hope that the Pac-12 will be able to return to competition in the New Year.”Pac-12 Commissioner Larry Scott said that playing in a bubble wouldn't work.“Unlike professional sports, college sports cannot operate in a bubble,” he said in the news release. “Our athletic programs are a part of broader campuses in communities where in many cases the prevalence of COVID-19 is significant. We will continue to monitor the situation and when conditions change we will be ready to explore all options to play the impacted sports in the new calendar year.”In a press release, the Big Ten conference said that multiple factors, which included advice and counsel of the Big Ten Task Force, contributed to them postponing fall sports.“The mental and physical health and welfare of our student-athletes have been at the center of every decision we have made regarding the ability to proceed forward,” said Big Ten Commissioner Kevin Warren in the statement. “As time progressed and after hours of discussion with our Big Ten Task Force for Emerging Infectious Diseases and the Big Ten Sports Medicine Committee, it became abundantly clear that there was too much uncertainty regarding potential medical risks to allow our student-athletes to compete this fall."The Big Ten Conference was the first major conference to cancel fall athletics.“We know how significant the student-athlete experience can be in shaping the future of talented young women and men who compete in the Big Ten Conference," said Warren in the statement. "Although that knowledge made this a painstaking decision, it did not make it difficult. While I know our decision today will be disappointing in many ways for our thousands of student-athletes and their families, I am heartened and inspired by their resilience, their insightful and discerning thoughts, and their participation through our conversations to this point.
