The family whose dog died on a United Airlines flight in March has reached a settlement with the carrier, the family attorney and the airline said Thursday.The 10-month-old French bulldog named Kokito was inside an overhead bin on Flight 1284 from Houston to New York after a flight attendant told the passenger to put it there.When the plane landed at LaGuardia Airport, the dog was dead.The financial details of the settlement are confidential as part of the agreement, according to Evan Oshan, the attorney representing the Catalina Robledo family.United spokesman Charles Hobart said the airline began a comprehensive review of its animal transport policy and is collaborating with American Humane?to improve its practices. Scripps Company, based in Cincinnati, Ohio announced it has added two television stations to its business, bringing its current total to 35 stations in 26 markets.The stations purchased are ABC affiliates KXXV/KRHD in Waco, Texas, and WTXL in Tallahassee, Florida. The COVID-19 pandemic has hit people of color particularly hard, and one new study says that may be because of racial disparities in treating high blood pressure.According to the American Heart Association's Scientific Sessions, one-third of disparities in treatment may be the result of racial inequalities in prescribing or increasing the dosage of new medications used in treating high blood pressure.The study found that blood pressure control rates are lower in Black patients compared to other racial groups. Black patients also had more missed opportunities for treatment and missed more clinic appointments."A doctor might think a patient is less likely less able to afford medications, and because of that, they choose to not prescribe a certain medication," said Dr. Valy Fontil, an assistant professor of medicine at UCSF and one of the researchers involved in the study. "Or, they might know this person doesn't have transportation to the clinic, and so sometimes it might even be well-intentioned."Fontil says more standardized treatment protocols would help eliminate the disparities and prevent missed opportunities to get someone the medication they need."Sometimes people present, and the main thing that they're there for is not for the blood pressure," he said. "So, the clinician just sort of kind of might ignore the blood pressure. So automating these sort of standardized treatments would tell the clinician that they — even if the patient's not here for blood pressure — you have to address it in some way."Previous studies have also shown Black patients have more apprehension about why someone is giving them more medication. Fontil says one solution is having the patient be part of the treatment decision making.Fontil adds that the increasing number of virtual visits for blood pressure issues could make the racial disparities even worse. 1876

  

The digital news company Mic has laid off most of its staff, a spokesperson for the company confirmed.The layoffs were first reported Thursday by Recode. It is not yet clear exactly how many employees were affected. Mic declined to comment beyond confirming the Recode report.The company was founded in 2011, and for the past several years has branded itself as a news website geared toward millennials.Mic Publisher Cory Haik also resigned Thursday. In a note to staff that was obtained by CNN Business, Haik called journalism a "tough business.""Our business models are unsettled, and the macro forces at play are all going through their own states of unrest," she wrote. "If anyone tells you they have it figured out, a special plan to save us all, or that it's all due to a singular fault, know that is categorically false. Like the truth, it is indeed complicated."Mic was once a digital media darling, attracting around million in funding from investors. Its biggest backers included Lightspeed Venture Partners, Clark Jermoluk Founders Fund, WPP and WarnerMedia. When the Columbia Journalism Review reported in September that the company's board discussed a possible shutdown, Altchek called the report "categorically false."Emily Singer, a senior political reporter at Mic, tweeted Thursday that she was leaving the company."I'm so proud of what we've accomplished here," Singer wrote.Kerry Lauerman, Mic's executive news director, tweeted about the "gutting experience" Thursday."But only love for the extremely resilient and open-hearted team of Mic editors, producers, writers and shooters I had the great honor of working with," he added.
