All of the victims, including a child, were staying at the hotel. Three of the injured were hospitalized with burns. Sexually transmitted diseases are on the rise across the country. A new report from the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention found combined cases of syphilis, gonorrhea, and chlamydia reached an all-time high in the United States in 2018.In Humboldt County, California, health officials say sexually transmitted diseases have been on the rise for five years in a row. “We went from 434 chlamydia cases in 2014 to 790 in 2018,” said Hava Phillips of Humboldt County Department of Health and Human Services. “But last year, we saw sharper spike in HIV and syphilis.”We’re learning Humboldt County’s STD statistics mirror national numbers. According to the CDC, from 2017 to 2018, gonorrhea cases increased 5 percent to more than 580,000 cases.During the same time, reported chlamydia cases increased 3 percent to more than 1.7 million cases – that’s the most ever reported to CDC.And perhaps the most concerning number: syphilis cases among newborns increased 40 percent to more than 1,300 cases.“No one has boyfriends and girlfriends anymore; it’s like major hook up culture,” one Humboldt County man said. “That could be one reason why we are having higher STDs now.” With the reasons ranging from more people getting tested to fewer people using condoms, cuts to public health services and online dating are thought to be a big factors as well.“We are seeing changes cultural attitudes towards sex,” Phillips said. “We are seeing the availability of things like social networking applications that allow for meeting anonymous partners more easily.”To help slow down the spread of STDs, Humboldt County Health is spreading their message both online and in person with coasters warning people about the increase in STDs. “The idea was to make sure that people were aware that we were seeing an increase in syphilis cases and they can protect themselves better,” Phillips said. And in this small city that’s seeing big problems, they say the only sure way to stay safe is to be safe. 1999

SOUTH BEND, Ind. — The Indiana parents of a toddler who fell to her death out of an open cruise ship window in Puerto Rico filed a lawsuit Wednesday against Royal Caribbean Cruises, accusing the company of negligence by allowing the window to be opened.Chloe Wiegand fell to her death in July after her grandfather lifted her to the window on Royal Caribbean's Freedom of the Seas ship while the vessel docked. She would have turned 2 this week."We should be celebrating with presents and a birthday cake, but instead we are talking about her death," Chloe's mother, Kim Wiegand of Granger, Indiana, told reporters at a news conference in nearby South Bend. She said she spends time with her daughter's urn every night.Chloe's grandfather, Salvatore Anello, has been charged in Puerto Rico with negligent homicide. He insists he's colorblind and didn't know the 11th floor window in the children's play area was open. He said he believed he was lifting Chloe so that she could bang on the glass like at a hockey game. The lawsuit says the company violated industry standards by failing to provide reasonably safe windows in an area where children play on the ship. The wrongful death lawsuit was filed in U.S. District Court in Miami. It seeks an unspecified financial award. Royal Caribbean didn't immediately reply to an email seeking comment."We all sit here broken," Anello said Wednesday. "But our family is strong and we will stay strong together."Anello is due in a Puerto Rico court on Dec. 17. 1511

SHELTON, Wash. — Trudging through the forest on a brisk, drizzly day, a group of preschoolers dressed in neon yellow outerwear set out to learn, despite being caught in the rain.“We've got to make sure our sleeves are tucked in; our shirts are tucked into our gear so that we stay nice and dry,” Sabrina Green explains. Tucked between two creeks and an old growth cedar forest in Shelton, Washington, is the Squaxin Island Child Development Center.Scientists agree that spending time outdoors is good for you. In recent years, preschools have started education programs that take place all outside, all the time. It’s a trend spreading across the country. Here, in what is known as their "saplings and cedars classroom," teachers focus on social and emotional development, self-regulation and good old-fashioned tree climbing.Even when the weather becomes so challenging that you can’t use traditional books or tools in the classroom, the teachers just adjust their curriculum for the environment.“Academically there's really nothing different,” says outdoor lead preschool teacher Madison Ball. “Where the teachers inside are drawing on paper, we're drawing with sticks in the mud. Where the teachers inside are playing with slime that they made out of glue, we're playing with clay that we harvested from the creek.”According to the 1352
