LA JOLLA, Calif. (KGTV) - Scientists at the Sanford Consortium at UC San Diego will send brain tissue to space on Saturday, as part of the latest Space X launch."It sounds like science fiction, but it's actually happening right now," says Dr. Alysson Muotri, the Director of the UC San Diego Stem Cell program. He's leading a research team to study how zero-gravity environments will affect brain growth."We know from several previous studies that the human body has not evolved to deal with micro-gravity," Muotri says. "We suffer under these conditions. And the brain is also vulnerable."Muotri's team uses stem cells to create microscopic brain-organoids, tiny brain cells that will grow like a human brain. They'll send 100 of the brain-organoid cells to the International Space Station for 30 days. When the cells return, the scientists will compare them to similar cells grown in the lab on Earth, to find any differences caused by a month in space.Muotri says this study is key to helping humans in the quest to live off of Earth."The cells might age faster," he says. "That's a consequence of being under micro-gravity for long periods of time. So the brain might age. That might make you susceptible to cognitive decline, dementia or maybe Alzheimer's."Muotri says it's also essential to find out how a developing brain would grow because it could impact any pregnancy and gestation that happens in outer space."The human brain during gestation grows in a speed that's amazingly fast," says Muotri. "In space, we think that will be aggravated. It will be even bigger. So you can imagine a baby with a large brain, it might not pass through the birth channel. That might be a problem for humans in space."For more detailed information on the study, click here. 1773

LA MESA, Calif. (KGTV) - An Uber driver says she was physically assaulted by a passenger Sunday night in La Mesa after a dispute over a mask."This is definitely the most insane experience driving with Uber that I've ever had," said Tia.Just past 6 p.m. Sunday, Tia, who first started driving for Uber last summer, arrived for a pickup outside the Echo Pointe apartments.Tia says a man and the passenger's sister ushered the passenger into the car with a warning for Tia: the passenger was drunk."She didn't have a mask on ... so I asked her if she could please put on a spare mask, which I had in the back seat. Took her awhile to put it on, but she did," said Tia.As the ride got started, Tia says her passenger wouldn't let it go."She said in a very snarky tone, 'Are you more comfortable now that I have a mask on?' She was very drunk, very belligerent, yelling," said Tia.Tia say she decided to end the ride."I was fed up with the disrespect," said Tia.Tia says she returned to the pickup spot and asked her to get out repeatedly, but the woman refused. Tia recorded some of it on her phone. Tia, who eventually called 911, says when she got out of the car and reached in to remove the woman's belongings, the passenger grabbed her neck from behind.According to Tia, the passenger became violent, chasing her around the car for several minutes, at one point hitting in the right eye. Tia says the passenger's sister and the man came out and subdued the woman, allowing Tia to drive away, and meet police and file a report."I was dumbfounded. I couldn’t believe I was assaulted for essentially wearing a mask ... People need to treat each other with respect. Wear a mask ... We're just trying to keep everybody safe," said Tia.Tia says she's still feeling pain in her eye but she's feeling better. She's hoping an arrest is made so a message is sent: this behavior is not acceptable.A La Mesa Police spokesperson says they are awaiting the report to be turned in by the officer before it is assigned to an investigator. 2030

LAGOS, Nigeria (AP) — The governor of Nigeria’s Kaduna state has signed a law saying men convicted of rape will face surgical castration, and anyone raping a child under age 14 will face the death penalty. As for women, if they’re convicted of raping a child under 14, their fallopian tubes could be removed. Those found guilty of raping someone over the age 14 will face life imprisonment, under the newly amended penal code.Gov. Nasir Ahmad el-Rufai says the “drastic penalties are required to help further protect children from a serious crime.”Reported cases of rape in Nigeria have risen dramatically during the months of coronavirus restrictions, and women's groups have called for tougher measures, including the death penalty.Kaduna's new measures are the strictest in Nigeria, Africa's most populous country. 823
