Summer might technically be over in Doha, Qatar, but if you were to visit the small, desert nation in the middle of the Persian Gulf this weekend, you would still think it is summer. Temperatures are expected to approach 100 degrees, which is relatively mild compared to the actual summertime temperatures in Qatar. In the summer, temperatures frequently top 110 degrees. Because of the year round extreme heat, and FIFA's mandate that stadiums that host the World Cup be open air, Qatar has been renovating and building stadiums that are both open air and air conditioned. A stream of cold air is funneled at ankle level under the seats. The cold air then travels down the stadium and onto the field. There are also vents at the top of the stadium. The technology relies on the physics of cool air moving downward. According to the Qatar government, the temperature in Khalifa International Stadium can drop to around 70 degrees, when it is nearly 100 degrees outside. Khalifa International Stadium opened in 2017, and was the first of eight stadiums expected to host World Cup games in 2022. A second stadium opened in May. Six more are expected to open by 2022. Next month, Khalifa International Stadium will host the Arabian Gulf Cup, which is a contest between the national teams for five countries. In December, the stadium will then host the FIFA World Cup. "Qatar's hosting of the Arabian Gulf Cup is another opportunity to test the country's event hosting expertise as we continue preparations for the FIFA Club World Cup in December and the FIFA World Cup in 2022," said Saud Al Mohannadi, vice president of the Qatar Football Association and chairman of the Arabian Gulf Cup local organizing committee.Qatar's bid to host the World Cup has not come without controversy. Following Qatar's winning bid, a multi-national investigation looked into how Qatar won the bid to host the 2022 World Cup, among other scandals tied to soccer sanctioning body FIFA. Special counsel Robert Mueller's federal grand jury has been extended for up to six months.The grand jury, based in Washington, DC, was seated for an 18-month term that began in July 2017 and was set to expire in the coming days.Under federal rules, the court is able to extend a grand jury's term for another six months if it is "in the public interest."Grand jury activity is secret, except following the 23-person group's approval of criminal indictments.Chief Judge Beryl Howell of the DC District Court, who oversees the Mueller grand jury, granted the extension. Some employees, including 1.2 million middle class workers, could be overtime eligible starting in January under a new policy by the Trump administration. According to the Department of Labor, executive, administrative, or professional employees who make less than 4 a week (,568 a year) will now be eligible for time-and-a-half pay for work performed beyond 40 hours in a week. That is an increase from 5 a week (,660 a year). While the Department of Labor says the new rule is the first time the threshold for overtime eligibility has increased in 15 years, the Obama administration attempted to increase the overtime threshold ,476 a year. The rule, which had the opposition of then candidate Donald Trump, was shot down by the courts after Obama left office. Obama's policy was not defended in federal court by the Trump administration. The policy also increases the threshold for workers known as "highly compensated employees." The threshold increased from 0,000 to 7,432 per year. Those who are considered highly compensated employees are exempt from overtime pay. The Labor Department said it expects nearly 1.3 million workers will be eligible for overtime who currently aren't eligible. Of the 1.3 million workers, 100,000 will become overtime eligible after the highly compensated employee threshold increases."For the first time in over 15 years, America's workers will have an update to overtime regulations that will put overtime pay into the pockets of more than a million working Americans," Acting U.S. Secretary of Labor Patrick Pizzella said.
