INDIANAPOLIS — "I didn't know what to think. I was still in shock like how did the fire even happen?"Rachel McRee was in the restroom when she heard a loud explosion come from the kitchen where her boyfriend, Raveen Sugantheraj, had been cooking. "We didn't even realize that he had been burned," McRee said. The kitchen was on fire. So our first priority was putting that out."Once the couple finally put the fire out near the stove top, they realized that Sugantheraj had been severely burned. "It's his arms, his face, his neck, his hands, his ear," McRee said. "I feel terrible for him and the pain that he's in. I just feel horrible, you know, he's in so much pain," she said. "I've watched him get his bandage changed. He's got raw skin. It's like ten to 15 percent of his body that's just burnt off."Sugantheraj was in the hospital undergoing surgery on Friday."They're having to do skin grafts, severe ones. One is going to be pigskin, one's going to be his own skin," Sugantheraj's girlfriend said. She is not sure of his recovery time. The cause of the fire? A can of Pam cooking spray kept too close to open flames. "He's a full-time med student. He's educated. He's very smart... He had no idea - I had no idea," McRee said. "We know to keep cooking oil away, especially not on the stove top, but we had placed it far enough to where we thought it was OK."The medical director in Eskenazi's emergency department, Dr. Tyler Stepsis, said aerosol bottles like Pam make oils even more flammable. She said that this is a common occurrence. "You not only have the thing your aerosolizing but you also have the propellant. And the propellant a lot of times is what can catch fire," Dr. Stepsis said. As a warning: "When you set it down, don't put it by your stove, put it very far away because I don't want this to happen to anybody else," McRee said. Doctors say, bottom line, know what you're cooking with and keep it a safe distance from flames. RTV6 reached out to the company that makes Pam, and they told the newsroom:"Like other aerosols, PAM Cooking Sprays are flammable, and its contents are under pressure. JEFFERSON CITY, Missouri — As soon as the sirens sounded, Ed Stroesser and his family took shelter in their basement. Together they listened to the radio, waiting for the storm to pass. Across the city, Gerry Mack and his coworkers huddled, waiting anxiously. "We kind of tracked the path of the tornado. You [could] hear the buzzing and the tornado over us. It was a very eerie feeling," Mack said. The National Weather Service confirmed an EF-3 tornado, with winds up to 160 miles per hour, touched down in Jefferson City, Missouri, on Wednesday. The twister ripped roofs off of homes, overturned semi-trucks, and took out walls of businesses and houses. Stroesser's business was one of the places impacted. The wind knocking down the east side of the building, leaving the inside of his office exposed. "Oh it's horrible. We've been a business here for 40 years," he said. Before touching ground in Missouri's capitol, the tornado hit smaller towns, including Eldon, Missouri. Brenda Hooker sought shelter in her bathroom as the tornado bounced off of her home. "The house just jolted when it hit," she said. "It was like World War III." Jefferson City implemented a curfew for areas hit the hardest Thursday night from 9 p.m. to 5 a.m. Friday morning. 1268

It’s the foundation of American democracy: voting.Depending on where you are in the U.S., though, your election experience could look very different from that in your neighboring state or even just your neighbor.“It really does depend on where you are in the country,” said Marian Schneider, who heads up Verified Voting, a non-profit, non-partisan group that advocates for better election security.In particular, the group takes a closer look at when it comes to the use of computers in elections.“We use computers in every aspect of election administration in this country,” Schneider said. “We have also historically underfunded our elections and not put the money into them that we need in order to run a computerized operation.”So, what might voters encounter on election day? There are a few possibilities.- A paper ballot, where a voter uses a pen or paper to mark their choices and that paper is then scanned and counted by a computer.- A computerized device, where a voter presses a touchscreen to mark an electronic ballot, which then prints out a paper version that is scanned and counted.- And there are paperless electronic machines, which have a completely computerized ballot, with no paper trail.It is the last one, Schneider said, which raises big concerns because they are the most vulnerable to hacking. “First of all, they make it difficult to discover if something has gone wrong,” she said. “And then, even if you are able to discover it, you can't recover from it.”It can’t be recovered because there is no paper trail to serve as a backup. It’s a type of ballot currently used in all elections held in Louisiana, as well as some jurisdictions in nearly a dozen other states: Delaware, Georgia, Indiana, Kansas, Kentucky, Mississippi, New Jersey, Pennsylvania, South Carolina, Texas and Tennessee. Some of those are now in the process of phasing out the paperless devices, but upgrading election security is costly.“What you just saw most recently is bipartisan agreement to fund elections at the state level, so Congress just agreed to provide 5 million, in addition to 5 million they allocated in 2018,” said Liz Howard, with the Brennan Center for Justice. “So, we’re getting close to billion from the federal government to improve election security across the country."While states continue grapple with the cost of replacing vulnerable and aging voting machines, Schneider said voters still need to do their part.“There's only one surefire way to make sure your vote is not counted,” she said, “and that's if you don't show up at the polls.” 2590
