By 2060, almost a quarter of all U.S. residents will be over age 65, and life expectancy will reach an all-time high of 85 years, according to new reports the U.S. Census Bureau released Thursday.The growth in life expectancy in the U.S. over the next four decades is expected to be slower than it was in the four previous decades. Between 1970 and 2015, life expectancy rose by almost 8 years, but it’s only predicted to rise about 6 years between 2017 and 2060. That’s because in the latter half of the 20th century, there were decreases in infectious diseases and cardiovascular deaths, increases in vaccinations as well as the promotion of exercise and anti-smoking campaigns.Looking forward, “the prevalence of preventable health risks — such as smoking, obesity, and, more recently, opioid-related overdoses — hinders overall population health and contributes to slowed gains in life expectancy,” according to the report which uses the U.S. Census Bureau’s 2017 National Population Projections.Although women are still projected to live longer than men by 2060, as they do now, life expectancy is expected to grow larger for men than woman. While all racial and ethnic groups are expected to have gains in life expectancy, the biggest ones are projected to be for black men, American Indian men and Alaska native men, according to the report.The U.S. is expected to grow by almost a quarter in the next four decades, from about 332 million people today to 404 million people by 2060. By 2028, the percentage of foreign-born people will be 14.9%, the highest level since 1850, according to the Census Bureau.But growth hinges on U.S. immigration policy, according to the Census Bureau.With high levels of immigration, defined as an increase of 50% above last decade’s levels, the U.S. population could grow to 447 million people by 2060. With no immigration, the United States would lose population after 2035, and the country’s population would decline to 320 million by 2060, according to the Census Bureau.Immigration also will determine the nation’s diversity by 2060, said demographer William Frey of The Brookings Institution.By 2045, whites will represent less than half of the U.S. population under current projections, but that could speed up to 2040 under the high immigration scenario, he said.“If immigration was stopped, then we will stay majority white until 2060 but barely at 51.1 percent,” Frey said in an email. “But the story is different for the young under age 30 population.”For those under age 30, the population becomes “minority white” in 2022 with the high immigration scenario. Under current projections, it crosses that threshold in 2024. Without immigration, whites under age 30 will be in the minority by 2032, Frey said.Starting in 2030, international migration will be the biggest driver of population growth in the U.S., exceeding natural increases.The country’s population growth will slow down over the next four decades, growing by about 2.3 million people a year through 2030. An English teacher with Metro Nashville Public Schools has been placed on leave pending a disciplinary review for a homework some parents considered to be inappropriate. The assignment itself has sparked conversation about race and how to handle tough subjects in the classroom.The homework in question was assigned to 30 students at Cane Ridge High School in Antioch as they discussed "Fences," a play and film adaptation exploring the topic of race as a father struggles to provide for his family. The handout given to students asked them to write a one-page paper on the derogatory term "n-word" and answer several questions including how the word is racist and how it is used. In the assignment provided by a parent, the term was spelled out. The play uses the language frequently. The parent, who wanted to remain anonymous, said she was hurt and felt the conversation about race and derogatory terms should be taught by parents and not the school. She wanted more awareness about how sensitive the topic is and preferred prior notification. The teacher involved has been with MNPS since 2015 and received no disciplinary actions in the past. Spokesperson Sean Braisted of MNPS said the assignment has been retracted and canceled. In a statement, MNPS Director Dr. Adrienne Battle said, “The homework assignment given out at Cane Ridge High School was offensive, inappropriate, and out-of-line with the standards of MNPS. I sincerely apologize to students, families, and community members who may experience pain or trauma as a result of this incident.""It's difficult for sure in this particular context if the assignment is appropriate, but based on what I see, those are the kinds of questions we need to engage with our young people," said Cornelius Vanderbilt Distinguished Professor of Education Richard Milner.Milner said having deep conversations on tough subjects like this is in the classroom is essential and can be beneficial to help young people engage in difficult conversations outside of the classroom. However, he stresses a lot of work is required to communicate the meaning and history behind the word beforehand."Thinking about and asking young people to engage with the word without talking and being deliberate about the historical nature of it can do more harm than good," he said.Milner said while most teachers tend to have really good intentions, sometimes teachers are unprepared to address what might be considered the difficult issues, and should have proper tools. Since the incident, a student started an online petition showing support for the teacher. So far it has garnered more than 800 virtual signatures. The student said the teacher is "being persecuted for trying to prepare us for the real world by gifting us with the ability to think critically."Battle said the actions of the teacher will be investigated by Human Resources. The administration is working with the Equity and Diversity team on follow-up actions or training for any other faculty at the school who may have been involved in the decision to approve the assignment. 3089

Around 44 million Americans are in this situation and now some are getting help from their employers.“My undergrad is in marketing, I also got my masters just a general MBA as well,” said 31-year-old Eliza Baseau in Boston. “I graduated with 0,000 in student loan debt. It’s startling.”Badeau left college paying, monthly, as much towards student loans as rent in Boston. “Making those payments was insane,” added Badeau. However, a few years after working at Fidelity Investments, the company announced it was rolling out a new workplace perk that would give its employees extra money toward repaying their student loan debt.“Oh my gosh. It was overwhelming in a positive way,” said Badeau, “So, they asked if I could help pilot it and I was like absolutely ‘why not’ why am I not going to do that, right?”Fidelity began giving her and other employees up to 6 a month toward her student loan repayment, with a ,000 lifetime cap. For Badeau, that was almost 20 percent of her monthly student loan bill, and it will equate to paying almost 20 percent of her overall student loan debt. “In the beginning it was something for me where I didn’t see a future in buying a home, I didn’t see a future in starting a family because I couldn’t even fathom getting married or paying for a wedding or having children while battling this debt,” said Badeau, “So now it’s something where that is an option for me.”A growing number of companies are offering similar help to staff stressed and saddled with student loan debt, in part, because these employers are seeing it’s actually benefiting them too.“What we have seen is that it is actually contributing to a reduction in turnover of over 70 percent,” said Asha Shrikantiah.Shrikantiah heads Fidelity’s student loan debt program and has seen it be so successful, internally at increasing employee loyalty and productivity, that the company has taken it external.“We now have an entire benefit’s business around helping people all across the country with standing up employer sponsored benefits for student debt.”Fidelity has helped almost a hundred other companies roll out some form of monthly student loan repayment assistance. That has brought the number to a total of about 8 percent of companies across the country that now offer this new benefit. Over the next five years, that is expected to grow to 20 percent, according to the Society of Human Resources Management. Eventually, student loan repayment assistance could be as common of a workplace perk as 401ks. “Honestly I think there will be no choice. I think just seeing the wave of the generations coming in burdened by the student debt,” said Badeau. “Saving for retirement is a great benefit but right up in there is dealing with your current debt.”Not every company that offers student loan repayment offers it in the same way. Some companies, like Fidelity, will pay their contribution directly to your servicer. Others will match all or a portion of what you pay in monthly student loans to your 401k or other retirement plan. There is quite a variety of ways companies are offering this benefit. Most of the variety comes from companies trying to work this new benefit in, while navigating around tax codes that hinder the amount and way the company can offer student loan repayment assistance.H.R. 1043 is a bill that was introduced in 2019 that would let employers give tax-free student loan assistance up to ,250 a year per employee. Should that bill pass, student loan repayment assistance could be streamlined at most companies that offer it, and even more employers would likely jump on board with the new workplace perk. 3832
