SAN DIEGO (KGTV) – A sailor who was rescued at sea off San Onofre State Beach in San Clemente was taken to San Diego by the Coast Guard Monday. The man called Joint Harbor Operations in San Diego about 11:20 a.m. to report his 18-foot boat was taking on water 12 miles offshore.“I tried a couple of things to fix the problem and couldn’t figure out where the water was coming in from,” Gillest said.He was able to radio the Coast Guard for help, who sent a helicopter crew to rescue him.“I was in contact with the pilot. He said if the stern starts going underwater, its time to get away from the boat,” Gillest said.  “The uncertainty was when I was getting out to me, watching it fill with water, I was like who’s going to get out here? Am I going to be in the water before anyone gets here?”By around 12:45 p.m., the boat began to sink and Gillest was forced to jump into the water. Gillest, who is retired military and a strong swimmer, says he was in the water for about 10 minutes. The Coast Guard deployed a rescue swimmer and basket into the water, who was able to reach Gillest, put him into the basket, and hoist him up into the chopper. “Not really scared because I know the coast guard guys and they’re awesome,” Gillest said, “Everything went textbook.” 1282

SAN DIEGO (KGTV) - A large crowd held a rally against a reopening rollback and another indoor closure Tuesday. The rally took place outside the steps of the County Administration building around 4 pm.The County has been on the cusp of moving into the most restrictive tier in the Governor's safe reopening plan. If that happens, many businesses would be required to close their indoor operations. Many at the rally pushed for local control. They say local leaders should be able to call the shots to reopen their communities safely.County Board Vice-Chair Jim Desmond spoke at the rally. The Board held a special meeting and closed session Monday evening.Board Chairman Greg Cox released the following statement after the meeting:"Tonight, our Board of Supervisors met in a special closed session and discussed our legal options regarding the State's reopening criteria and the effect on local businesses and schools. The Board did not vote on any actions. We will continue to work with the State to make sure the metrics accurately reflect the underlying dynamics of the pandemic in San Diego County. The Board will meet again tomorrow at 3:00 pm to provide an update to the public." 1189

SAN DIEGO (KGTV) - A man who apparently set himself on fire and died of burn injuries is unidentified, the San Diego County Medical Examiner’s office said Friday in a plea for the public’s help. An artist created a rendering of the man who told first responders his name was Randy. Medical Examiner’s Investigator Tessa Lee said Randy apparently set himself ablaze under an overpass bridge in Carmel Valley July 4. He died six days later. Randy’s burns were too severe for investigators to obtain fingerprints or identify tattoos or a birthmark. The man was Hispanic or Caucasian, in his 20s to early 40s, with short dark hair, and green or hazel eyes. He stood between 5’9” and 5’11”, and weighed about 270 pounds. Lee said Randy might have been homeless. Anyone with information is asked to call investigators at 858-694-2905. 836

SAN DIEGO (KGTV) - A San Diego family is preparing to uproot their lives and move across the country so their 2-year-old son can get a life-altering liver transplant. After Gavin was born, Kendra and Vince Giacalone waited nearly two years for answers on what was wrong with their son.Eventually, through exome sequencing, they learned Gavin had a rare genetic disorder: GM3 Synthase Deficiency. He's missing an enzyme which helps with brain development. The family read online there was no treatment or medicine for their son but they refused to give up.After connecting with specialists they are now hopeful a liver transplant from Kendra's sister will replace the enzyme Gavin is missing. The family will move to Pittsburg for several months while Gavin gets the transplant. All transplant costs are being covered by the Children's Organ Transplant Association (COTA).The family is trying to raise ,000 for COTA in Gavin's name - 100 percent of donations will go to Gavin. You can also follow Gavin's Rare Journey on Facebook.  1041
