WASHINGTON, D.C. – Dr. Deborah Birx is warning Americans who traveled for Thanksgiving and attended a large gathering that they should assume they were infected with the coronavirus.The coordinator of the White House Coronavirus Task Force is advising those who gathered with numerous loved ones for the holiday to get tested in next few days.“If your family traveled, you have to assume that you are exposed and you became infected and you really need to get tested in the next week and you need to avoid anyone in your family with comorbidities or (who is) over 65,” Birx told “Face the Nation” on Sunday.Birx also says the task force is even asking families to mask indoors if they chose to gather during Thanksgiving and others went across the country or even into the next state.“And if you're over 65 or you have comorbidities and you gathered at Thanksgiving, if you develop any symptoms, you need to be tested immediately because we know that our therapeutics work best, both our antivirals and our monoclonal antibodies, work best very early in disease,” said Birx.During her interview, Birx referred to the current spike in COVID-19 cases as the nation’s “third wave” and compared it to second wave we saw over the summer.“We saw what happened post Memorial Day,” said Birx. “Now we are deeply worried about what could happen post-Thanksgiving because the number of cases, 25,000 versus 180,000 a day, that's why we are deeply concerned.”Birx says she’s worried about how last week’s holiday gatherings may increase the case count even more, especially in states with fewer COVID-19 restrictions. WASHINGTON, D.C. — The Justice Department filed an antitrust lawsuit against Google on Tuesday, alleging the tech company has been abusing its dominance in online search to stifle competition and harm consumers.In the lawsuit filed by the DOJ and attorneys general from 11 conservative-leaning states, officials say Google has accounted for nearly 90% of all search queries in the U.S. and has used anticompetitive tactics to extend its monopolies in search and search advertising.Specifically, the complaint claims Google unlawfully maintained monopolies by doing the following:Entering into exclusivity agreements that forbid preinstallation of any competing search serviceEntering into tying and other arrangements that force preinstallation of its search applications in prime locations on mobile devices and make them undeletable, regardless of consumer preferenceEntering into long-term agreements with Apple that require Google to be the default – and de facto exclusive – general search engine on Apple’s popular Safari browser and other Apple search toolsGenerally using monopoly profits to buy preferential treatment for its search engine on devices, web browsers, and other search access points, creating a continuous and self-reinforcing cycle of monopolizationGoogle has long denied the claims of unfair competition. The company argues that although its businesses are large, they are useful and beneficial to consumers.“Today, millions of Americans rely on the Internet and online platforms for their daily lives. We’re getting a clearer picture of housing inequalities minority families are facing.Two economists analyzed more than a decade of tax assessment and sales information for nearly 120 million homes across the country. They focused on areas where every homeowner theoretically faces the same tax rate.What they found was that minority homeowners still ended up paying a ten to 13 percent higher tax rate on average. For the median Black or Hispanic household, that could be an extra to 0 a year.They also looked at property tax appeals in Chicago, and found Black homeowners were significantly less likely to appeal their property tax assessment. This kind of data is not available nationwide, but it is believed to be a widespread issue.“So much of it is rooted in systemic and historical structures of racism. So, you know, if you’re white and middle class in this country and you feel like your property tax bill is off in a way that doesn’t benefit you, your experience with government has probably been ‘oh, if I appeal or either that there's probably a process by which i can go get that wrong righted and i'll be given a fair shake at that,’” said Chris Hoene, with the California Budget and Policy Center.Hoene said Black Americans overall have had a far different experience with government, and the idea a Black homeowner would go and appeal and be treated fairly is not something they would consider.Hoene suggests creating systems that are less dependent on showing up in person to make their case, possibly allow appeals through an online system.The economists who looked at the nationwide data suggest assessors to look at zip code level home price indexes to reduce overtaxation. WAUWATOSA, Wis. — A 3-year-old in Wisconsin can see for the first time thanks to a new procedure.  McKinley Sovey is the youngest person to undergo this type of gene therapy. Her parents Parker and Julie Sovey have been watching her progress."There was that moment when she did look at me for the first time," said Julie. "I was like I think this is working. I can't even really explain it.  She's 3 years old and she looks at mom for the first time. It was a really really cool moment and it was the moment I was waiting for."McKinley was born practically blind. The most she could see was the contrast of light. When she was a year and a half, doctors discovered she inherited a retinal disease.  "Six months after that FDA approval, and then less than a year after that she's having the procedure, so it's been like rapid fire," Parker said. Dr. Stephen Russell works in the Department of Ophthalmology and Visual Sciences at the University of Iowa Hospital. He performed both of McKinley's eye surgeries with the gene therapy earlier this month.  "Complicated drug because it has multiple parts to the drug and complicated surgery because to make sure we delivered the drug to the appropriate tissues," said Russell.Russell said he is basically forcing DNA into the right cell."We had to do a surgery just to put the solution in the appropriate spot, which is in the area underneath the retina," he said. "At that point, it's just fingers crossed that this gene ends up in the spot that it's supposed to," said Julie.The Soveys knew there were risks and potential complications.  "It's terrifying," said Russell.They were hoping the therapy would at least help McKinley maintain the little vision she had. After the first eye surgery, mom and dad didn't notice a difference. But it was shortly after the second surgery they knew it worked. Parker said she was moving with a purpose."She walked into the kitchen, pulled a chair out, stood up on the chair and actively feeling like the toaster and the coffee maker like she knew those were there and she wanted to get up and be able to feel them," he said.McKinley's depth perception is also changing."Being able to see things further away has been really neat and it's also been kind of scary because I feel like I'm having to re-childproof the house for a 3-year-old," said Julie."She use to feel around for whatever it was she was eating," Parker said. "Then she'd put her hands in it to see what it was and then she'd put the spoon in it, and then usually it was dumped by the time it got to her face."McKinley will still likely be visually impaired, but her parents said any progress is a bonus."She may no longer need to be a braille reader," Julie said. "I don't know if she'll need to use a cane to navigate."They said their daughter is becoming more confident and her personality is even changing."This is kind of part of medical history," said Julie.McKinley has some checkups scheduled, but doctors hope she won't need another surgery. 3071
