PYONGYANG, Sept. 25 (Xinhua) -- Chinese living in the Democratic People's Republic of Korea (DPRK) on Friday expressed willingness to help boost bilateral ties at a reception in the Chinese embassy to Pyongyang.     The reception was held to mark the 60th anniversary of the founding of the People's Republic of China.     A powerful and prosperous motherland is a powerful backing for the Chinese in the DPRK, said Liang Zuojun, vice president of the Central Committee of the Federation of the Chinese Residing in the DPRK. BEIJING, Sept. 29 (Xinhua) -- Senior Chinese leader Li Changchun Tuesday asked the People's Publishing House, China's oldest publisher of books on the Party and politics, to actively use new media to expand its influence.     Li, a member of the Standing Committee of the Communist Party of China (CPC) Central Committee Political Bureau, said during a visit to the publishing house that it should invigorate its development. BEIJING, Aug. 1 (Xinhua) -- Several hundred former generals, famous military artists, and soldiers gathered at the foot of the Great Wall Saturday to celebrate the 82nd anniversary of the founding of the Chinese People's Liberation Army (PLA), which falls on August 1.     At the ceremony organized by the China Great Wall Society (CGWS), veterans recited a poem telling their love and wishes for the country and the people.     Lieutenant General Shao Huaze, vice chairman of the CGWS, said the peom was written based on the wishes collected from the veterans.     The CGWS also held an exhibition of more than 500 calligraphy and painting works by former generals.

BEIJING, Sept. 17 (Xinhua) -- Chinese police have confiscated close to 53,000 guns by the end of August in a nationwide crackdown started in March this year, and 9,849 suspects involved in gun-related crimes were punished, the Ministry of Public Security (MPS) said Thursday.     The ministry started the special crackdown on explosives and gun-related crimes in March, and said it would continue till China's Oct. 1 National Day celebration.     The crackdown is part of the ministry's campaign to maintain public stability, as this year marks the 60th anniversary of the founding of the People's Republic of China.     Police also confiscated more than 2 million bullets and 120,000imitation guns, the ministry said.     About 12 percent of all guns confiscated were seized in the southern Hainan Province, while about 17 percent of the confiscated bullets came from the central Henan Province, the ministry said.     The southern province of Guangdong seized 34,690 imitation guns, which took up one fourth of the total.     Meanwhile, the MPS urged that efforts to crack down on gun-related crime must not be relaxed yet. Police forces should mobilize the public to report to the ministry if they have information about gun-related crimes, the ministry said on its website.     About 60 percent of the guns confiscated by the police were handed in by the public voluntarily, the ministry said.

BEIJING, Aug. 6 (Xinhua) -- China still has a long way to go in upgrading industrial processes, although it had managed to secure economic stabilization and was moving upwards, Zhuang Jian, a senior economist with the Asian Development Bank, said Thursday.     "China has achieved great success in bolstering the economy's growth through a series of plans to stimulate it, but it should also continue making efforts to upgrade its industries, as well as its energy-saving and pollution reduction measures, to sustain development," Zhuang said.     China's economic growth had slowed during the global downturn, but expanded 7.9 percent in the second quarter of 2009 year on year after sinking to 6.1 percent in the first quarter.     Zhuang said the improvement of China's industrial structure and increasing energy conservation were of critical importance to the world.     Government figures show the amount of energy consumed in China to produce a unit of gross domestic product (GDP) dropped 3.35 percent year on year in the first half. The decrease compares with 2.88 percent for the first half of last year.     China should also promote domestic consumption to boost economic growth, he said.
