United Airlines has established a new policy for transporting pets in cargo holds that includes banning dozens of dog breeds and several types of cats.The new policy takes effect June 18, when the carrier will resume reservations for its PetSafe program. The airline temporarily stopped the program in March after a series of high-profile incidents involving pets that were lost and others that died on United flights.United said it will be working with American Humane, an animal-welfare group, to improve the well-being of pets that travel on United, both in the cargo hold and in the cabin. Two journalists from WYFF-TV based out of Greenville, South Carolina were killed Monday afternoon when a tree fell on their SUV while covering a storm that was causing flooding in the area, the station confirmed. WYFF anchor Mike McCormick and WYFF photojournalist Aaron Smeltzer were killed by the tree that landed on the SUV. The incident happened in Polk County, North Carolina. Tryon Fire Chief Geoffrey Tennant told WYFF that the SUV's engine was running when authorities reached the scene around 2:30 p.m. on Monday. The tree was reportedly 3 feet in diameter. Heavy rain in the area caused the roots of the tree to fail, Tennant told the station. "It personally affected me a little bit because I had done an interview with Mr. McCormick about 10 minutes before we got the call. And we had talked a little bit about how he wanted us to stay safe and I wanted him to stay safe and of course 10 or 15 minutes later we got the call and it was him and his photographer," Tennant said. "It's the first time I ever met either one of those two gentleman, but you feel a sense of responsibility to them."McCormick joined the station in 2007 as a reporter, and was promoted to anchor in 2014. Smeltzer joined the station in February.  1310

Video at the scene showed sparks showering on the ground below.According to SDG&E's outage map, nearly 7,500 customers in the University Heights, North Park, Normal Heights, Kensington, Talmadge, and City Heights areas were without power starting just after 5:30 p.m. SDG&E crews were assessing what caused the outage and estimated the outage to be restored by 8:30 p.m., according to the map. 807

VALLEY CENTER (CNS) - A motorist was killed today when he crashed his car off a two-lane rural road northeast of Escondido while trying to pass another vehicle at high speed, authorities reported.The 35-year-old San Marcos resident lost control of his Acura TL while attempting to steer around a slower-moving Toyota Highlander on Valley Center Road near Rock Hill Ranch Road about 1:15 p.m., according to the California Highway Patrol.The Acura sideswiped the SUV, then skidded off the roadway and crashed into a power pole and a tree, killing the driver and sole occupant of the sedan, CHP public-affairs Officer Mark Latulippe said.The 35-year-old San Marcos woman behind the wheel of the Toyota was unharmed, as were the six young children riding in her vehicle, Latulippe said. 790
