The Red Bluff Police Department said in a release that 21-year-old Christian Sandoval-Perez of Corning faces multiple charges including child abuse and domestic violence. Officers went to the hotel’s second floor and encountered Sandoval-Perez with a gun. He held off police for more than 75 minutes. 637

SACRAMENTO, Calif. (AP) — California Gov. Gavin Newsom is defending the state's pace for reopening amid the coronavirus pandemic. He says the economic harm the shutdown inflicted has negative health outcomes, too. Newsom's Monday comments come days after the state entered its broadest phase of reopening yet. Most counties are now cleared to allow the opening of bars, gyms, hotels, day camps, zoos and other attractions. Newsom and state health officials say the percentage of positive tests for the virus and hospitalizations are key metrics that have remained stable. Newsom says California officials are monitoring 13 counties that are seeing increased transmission rates or hospitalizations. 705

SACRAMENTO, Calif. (AP) — The California Assembly has apologized for discriminating against Japanese Americans and helping the U.S. government send them to internment camps during World War II. The Assembly passed a resolution Thursday that also apologized for discrimination leading up to the war. It comes a day after California Gov. Gavin Newsom and the governors of Idaho and Arkansas declared Feb. 19 a Day of Remembrance. That's the day in 1942 when President Franklin D. Roosevelt signed an executive order leading to the imprisonments. California lawmakers gave somber statements and hugged and shook hands with people who were imprisoned in the camps and with their families. The Democratic assemblyman who introduced the resolution said the state would be apologizing for a time when "California led the racist anti-Japanese American movement.”The measure received bipartisan support, a rarity in the Legislature. 930
