Late last Saturday night, Ethan Crispo had just left a friend's birthday party in Birmingham, Alabama, and walked into a Waffle House around midnight to grab a bite.Crispo told CNN only a single employee was working in the restaurant. He described the cook's face, as "awash in bewilderment," at finding he was by himself managing the night shift.More than 30 people were there eating, and there was just one man left to "fend off the incoming crowd of hungry, heavily imbibed customers," Crispo said.He became resigned to going home on an empty stomach. But a customer finished his meal, asked for an apron and stepped behind the counter to wash dishes."It was a smooth transition," Crispo, 24, said. "He just busted his butt and helped out."'It was one of my most memorable experiences'Crispo said he asked Ben, the lone associate working, who the man washing dishes was.Turns out he didn't work at the restaurant, nor did he work at a Waffle House anywhere.Another woman, wearing a dress and heels, also stepped up. She walked behind the counter to get a coffee pot."At first I thought it was out of necessity, like she just wanted coffee," Crispo said. But she was enlisting as a second member of the volunteer staff. The two worked together in a team, busing tables, stacking cups and washing dishes. Meanwhile, Ben, the actual employee, manned the cash register and cooked at the grill. The man washing dishes occasionally "had to ask Ben where stuff should go," Crispo said, but otherwise it was as though though two strangers, without even talking to each other, had spontaneously learned to run a restaurant in tandem.Pat Warner, a spokesman for Waffle House, told CNN the store had a miscommunication about the duty roster that night, and it had created "a little gap" in staffing."We're very appreciative and thankful, but we do prefer to have our associates behind the counter," Warner said.He added that Waffle House restaurants tend to have a special sense of community. He recalled a similar time in 2014 when diners volunteered to keep a restaurant running when paid staff couldn't get to work during Atlanta's notorious Snowmageddon storm. But, for Crispo it was the first time, and it'll stick out to him for years to come, as an example of humanity at its best."I've never seen anything like this ever happen, nor will I again, probably," Crispo said. "It was one of my most memorable experiences." 2424

Jared Lorenzen has died at the age of 38, family members confirmed to Matt Jones of Hey Kentucky!Lorenzen was the quarterback of the University of Kentucky football team and was signed by the New York Giants in 2004. He had openly struggled with his weight and had returned to Lexington to team up with the "Now Let's Get Fit" organization to help kids make healthy lifestyle choices.“I just want people to know there is something better out there that will make you feel better about yourself and going out and being out,” said Lorenzen. He was Mr. Kentucky Football 1998. He went to Fort Thomas Highlands High School where he also played basketball and baseball. As a junior, he passed for a Northern Kentucky-record 2,759 yards and 37 touchdowns in 13 games. He won state championship titles in 1996 and 1998 and also went to the Sweet 16 tournament with the boys' basketball team. He would often joke about his weight, but was making strides to get healthier.“I came out of the womb big as can be. I was a 13 pound baby,” said Lorenzen. In a 2017 interview with the Today Show, Lorenzen told anchors that he wanted to live long enough to see his daughter get married and his son play college football. Lorenzen had been in the hospital with several health ailments and was in the ICU. The family released a statement to Matt Jones reading , "It is with heavy hearts that the family of Jared Lorenzen, would like to extend our sincere thanks and appreciation for all of your support and prayers over the past 6 days. Inexcusable. My God. A police officer who tear gases a civilian whose hands are up does a dishonor to his colleagues and his city and needs to be brought to justice. https://t.co/zYvEKidJtQ— Corey Johnson (@CoreyinNYC) May 31, 2020 243

It has been nearly a month since 20 Democrats met for the first debate to vie for the party’s nomination in next year’s presidential election. On Tuesday and Wednesday, 20 Democrats will once again take the stage, this time in Detroit. What is differentWhile there will be 20 Democrats on the stage -- 10 each night -- one Democrat has since dropped out of the race. Rep. Eric Swalwell of California ended his bid for the presidency earlier this month. His spot on the debate stage has since been filled by Montana Gov. Steve Bullock. With this debate being aired on CNN, there will be a different set of moderators. Don Lemon, Dana Bash and Jake Tapper will conduct the debate. Unlike last month’s Miami debate, CNN has told the candidates that there will be no “show of hands or one-word, down-the-line questions.” Also different, CNN has threatened to reduce the time of candidates who are constantly interrupting. What is the sameCandidates will be given 60 seconds to answer and 30 seconds for follow ups. The requirements to qualify for the debate also remained the same, and was based off of polling and fundraising criteria.Biden back as frontrunnerVice President Joe Biden’s lead took a bit of a hit in the days following the last debate thanks to a contentious confrontation from Sen. Kamala Harris of California. Harris’ emotional rebuke of Biden’s stance on public school busing in the 70s was easily the most memorable moment of the night. It also seemed to have, at least temporarily, cut into Biden’s lead. Polls from CNN and Quinnipiac University had Biden’s polling as low as 22 percent. Harris, for her part, saw her numbers increase to above 10 percent. Biden has seen his polling number return to near 30 percent. Harris, however, has continued to poll above 10 percent, indicating that she perhaps draw some support from some of the other candidates. Biden and Harris are the two center-stage candidates for the July 31 debate. But Harris might not be Biden’s biggest concern on Wednesday. Sen. Cory Booker and Biden have been involved in a spat in recent days over criminal justice reform. Booker called Biden “an architect of mass incarceration.” This is over Biden’s support for the 1994 Crime Bill. Warren/Sanders showdownSens. Bernie Sanders and Elizabeth Warren are generally allies in the Senate, but on Tuesday, they will square off on stage. The two senators are vying for the support of the liberal wing of the party.Sanders and Warren have been contending for No. 2 in polling. Is it quite possible that Tuesday’s debate will consist of the moderators trying to find some daylight between the two candidates. Both candidates make income inequality a central theme of their campaigns. Both are strong proponents of Medicare-for-all. Both support increasing the national minimum wage. How candidates qualifiedTo qualify for the second round of debates, candidates had to fulfill one of two criteria: either get 65,000 donors to their campaigns, with at least 200 donors in 20 different states, or obtain at least 1% in three polls recognized as legitimate by the committee. Here are the candidates: On July 30, these candidates will be on stage: 3186

It appears some companies are taking advantage of consumers during the COVID-19 crisis as the Federal Trade Commission said Tuesday that it received 7,800 coronavirus-related complaints. The number of complaints the FTC has received doubled last week from the previous week, the governmental agency announced. The FTC said that top categories of fraud complaints include travel and vacation related reports about cancellations and refunds, reports about problems with online shopping, mobile texting scams, and government and business imposter scams. The FTC said that the complaints total .77 million in losses, or a median loss of 8. The FTC is asking consumers who believe they have been scammed to report fraudulent activity on its 753
