HUDSON, Ohio — A Hudson woman who hosted a large house party at a rental home in October was convicted in Municipal Court Tuesday for violating state health orders to prevent the spread of coronavirus.The woman was convicted of violations prohibited and criminal damaging, both second-degree misdemeanors, according to court records.On Oct. 10, the woman used a website to rent a home in the 6800 block of Windsor Road in Hudson, according to court records. More than 150 people attended the party, in excess of the number of people allowed by the mass gatherings order that limits groups to no more than 10 people.Attendees caused more than ,500 in damage to the property, according to court records.The Akron Beacon Journal reported that on the night of the party, police were called to the scene and multiple vehicles were towed throughout the night. HOUSTON (AP) — Houston officials have canceled the Texas GOP’s in-person convention.They say the spread of the coronavirus made it impossible to hold the event as scheduled.Houston Mayor Sylvester Turner said Wednesday that the city’s lawyers exercised provisions in the contract that the Texas Republican Party signed to rent the downtown convention center for a three-day event to have started July 16.Virus cases have surged in Texas, particularly in the state’s largest cities.Republican Gov. Hurricane Maria made landfall Wednesday in southeast Puerto Rico, ripping trees out of the ground and entangling two-thirds of the island in hurricane-force winds.Maria made landfall near the city of Yabucoa with winds of 155 mph -- just 2 mph short of Category 5 status, the National Hurricane Center said.By 9 a.m., those winds had weakened to 145 mph. The possibility of another state joining the Union is intensifying as the prospect for a Democratic sweep on Election night increases. DEMOCRATS' POLITICAL MOTIVE Of course Democrats have a political motive in making the District of Columbia a state beyond the belief that "no taxation without representation" is unjust. D.C. is an overwhelmingly Democratic city with only 4% voting for President Trump in 2016. In all likelihood, two Democratic Senators would be elected, giving Democrats a major political advantage for decades to come. "This is not about the voice of the people of the District of Columbia, this is a raw powerplay," Senator Steve Daines, R-Montana, said in a recent interview with Scripps. Daines says if D.C. truly wants representation, Virginia or Maryland could annex parts of the city where people live. Strauss couldn't disagree more. "We want to join the union. What could be more patriotic than that?" Strauss said. For those who say the Constitution calls for the seat of government to not be in a state, Strauss says a new special district would be created outside of D.C.'s jurisdiction and stretch from the Supreme Court to the Capitol, through the National Mall and to the White House. 2278
