SAN DIEGO (Daily Aztec) - San Diego State men’s basketball returned in triumphant fashion to the friendly confines of Viejas Arena, defeating Jackson State 87-44 in front of a crowd of 10,453 on Tuesday night.SDSU (4-2), just six days removed from competing in the Maui Invitational in Maui, Hawaii, scored the first 11 points and never trailed in a wire-to-wire victory over the Tigers.In Maui, SDSU came away victorious against defending Big East champion Xavier, but struggled in losses to Duke and Iowa State, falling by deficits of 30 and 26 points, respectively.  Head coach Brian Dutcher said the game was a chance for the Aztecs to show what they were made of, following tough defeats.“We were challenged against Xavier and came back, we were challenged against Iowa State and didn’t fight hard enough,” Dutcher said. “So I said this is the next challenge. SAN DIEGO (KGTV) -- A 68-year-old woman has filed a lawsuit claiming she was sexually abused decades ago by a priest in Rialto, the latest in a wave of litigation targeting the Diocese of San Diego.The woman, identified only as Jane Doe, claims she was abused by Father Efren Neri while he served at Christ the King, a San Bernardino County parish that was then part of the Diocese of San Diego. “For many years, I just lived with it,” the woman said in an interview. “A lot of shame, anxiety all my life.”Father Neri died in 1982, according to the Diocese. In a statement, the Diocese said there are no reports Neri was ever accused of sexual misconduct with a minor. “None in San Diego, none in San Bernardino and none in Fresno,” the statement said. Last week, 20 people sued the Diocese of San Diego, alleging abuses by six other priests. SAN DIEGO (CNS) - The unemployment rate in the San Diego-Carlsbad Metropolitan Statistical Area dropped to 7.7% in October, a drop of 1.2% from September, according to figures released Friday by the state Employment Development Department.According to the EDD, total non-farm employment in San Diego County increased by 21,500 jobs month-over-month -- from 1,386,600 to 1,408,100 -- while farm employment contracted from 9,600 to 9,500.The unemployment rate at this time last year was 3%. The region lost 106,500 non-farm jobs and 400 agricultural jobs over the year.The region's unemployment rate rose to 15% in May during the COVID-19 pandemic, according to EDD data, while data from the San Diego Association of Governments showed rates of nearly 30% unemployment in May.In September, the state's unemployment rate dropped to 9% from 10.8% the previous month, and the nation's decreased to 6.6% from 7.7%.Professional and business services led all industry sectors in month- over-month job gains at 5,200. The majority of job gains were centered in professional, scientific and technical services -- up 3,400 -- while 1,000 jobs were posted in scientific, research and developmental services.Government jobs grew by 4,300, with 2,700 in local and 2,500 in state government gains. SAN DIEGO (CNS) - Two 7-Eleven stores located within two miles of each other in San Diego were robbed by a man with a gun and the suspect in each incident was at-large Saturday morning.The first occurred at 11:10 p.m. in the 4200 block of Voltaire Street, near Catalina Boulevard, in the Point Loma Heights neighborhood, according to Officer Robert Heims of the San Diego Police Department.The suspect walked into the store and approached the clerk, then lifted his shirt and showed the clerk the handle of a gun in his waistband and demanded money. The clerk gave the suspect an unknown amount of money and the man ran out of the store southbound on Catalina Boulevard, Heims said.The second robbery occurred at 12:45 a.m. Saturday at 3185 Midway Drive, near Sports Arena Boulevard, when a man walked into the store, lifted up his shirt and pulled a gun from his waistband, placed it on the counter facing the clerk and demanded money, Heims said.The clerk gave the gunman an unknown amount of money and the suspect put the gun back in his waistband then ran from the store northbound on East Drive into the Target parking lot, Heims said.In both robberies, the suspect was described as a white man, late 20s to early 30s, 6 feet tall and 180 pounds with short brown hair and a mustache. SAN DIEGO (KGTV) -- A bill created to improve warehouse working conditions has passed the state's Senate Labor Committee.Assembly Bill 3056, authored by Assemblywoman Lorena Gonzalez, ensures warehouse workers can take a restroom break, use a hand-washing station, drink water, or take a legally mandated break without fear of being fired.“We shouldn’t need to write a bill to make sure warehouse workers are able to take a restroom break or wash their hands without being reprimanded. But time and time again, Amazon has shown disregard for the safety of their workers -- even during this ongoing public health crisis,” Gonzalez said.AB 3056 not only applies to Amazon workers, but also to those who work at Target, Walmart, and other retailer warehouses.There has been an exponential rise in online sales leading to several companies adding automated systems to control the workflow. Worker productivity is monitored to determine whether someone has met a specified rate or quota of items pulled.Automated systems generate warnings when too many time-off tasks occur in a worker’s shift, and accumulated warnings can result in workers being fired without a human manager even being involved.The bill would establish civil penalties for an employer of 0 per employee for an initial violation, and ,000 per employee for subsequent violations. 1355
