(KGTV) - A state inspection found 12 flaws in Poway's drinking water delivery system less than three months before the city's precautionary boil water advisory.City officials remain adamant that the issues raised by the inspection had nothing to do with the nearly week-long advisory that ended Dec. 6. The September 2019 inspection, from the State Water Resources Control Board, raised a series of issues - some administrative. It says some of Poway's distribution system reservoirs haven't been cleaned or inspected in more than five years; that the city's coagulant feed pump meter isn't working, and that the city needs to update its water quality alarm systems for chlorine and clarity. The city issued the precautionary boil advisory on Nov. 30 after a Thanksgiving rain storm. A storm drain overflowed and backed up into its water treatment facility's clearwell reservoir due to Thanksgiving rains. Residents began reporting brownish water. The city temporarily fixed the problem, but state officials have said they anticipate issuing fines. The move comes after the Trump campaign recently acknowledged it was trying to conserve money. (KGTV) -- The San Diego County Sheriff’s Department is bringing attention to a 51-year-old unsolved murder.On May 1, 1967, 14-year-old Nikki Benedict was stabbed and left to die while walking home from her friend’s house in Poway.The family has gone 51-years without knowing what happened to Nikki. Both of her parents died without answers.Tuesday, one of her three surviving sisters was there with detectives bringing the case back up, hoping anyone with helpful information will come forward.An 11-year-old boy found Nikki suffering at 6:30 in the evening on the tragic day. Deputies and medics tried to save Nikki’s life, but she died after arriving at the hospital.When the crime happened, witnesses reported seeing a young man running from the scene. Investigators say almost every teenage boy in Poway was interviewed at the time but detectives found no connection.51-years later no one has yet been arrested for Nikki’s murder. President Donald Trump promised Tuesday his proposed tariffs on steel and aluminum will be applied in a "very loving way."Trump said the measures were necessary to balance global trade deficits."The United States has been taken advantage of by other countries, both friendly and not so friendly," Trump said during a news conference with his Swedish counterpart.The President said he didn't blame individual countries but instead past presidents for allowing trade deficits to balloon."I don't blame the countries," he said. (KGTV) - A Poway family is stocking up on resources in case a quarantine is triggered by the coronavirus.As the father, Nate took his love of engineering home to support the family, "we have a big family, and food is expensive, so we’ve always tried to be self reliant."Self reliant means gardens, poultry and fish. They have five kids. Right next to the back deck is a garden at about hip level. “We have kale, we have thyme and parsley. My cilantro grows pretty well here, we have salad greens.” Nate listed off. That particular garden is watered by a fish tank full of a dozen or so Tilapia.Fruit trees dot the backyard. Everything from apricot, apples and nectarines, to cherries, guavas and mulberries grow here.In the opposite side of the yard is a chicken coop. "We have 11 chickens, we get eggs every day. About 7," his wife, Lacy said happily. She said they planned to only grow one more garden this summer but in the last week four more have been constructed and prepared for seeding.In a shed next to the new garden beds, is a stockpile. Under a wood workbench sit brown metal tubs with 'Department of Defense Drinking Water' labels. Nate looked down at his clipboard and read off more supplies, “we have wheat for sprouting. We have about 100lbs. of brown sugar and honey."In the last month they've ramped up gathering supplies."This week we basically went and bought a lot of stuff that we would normally buy in the next few months, but we bought it now in case we can’t go in the next few months." Nate said he is watching national news and concerned a quarantine could come to San Diego.“We just have to take care of each other. There might not be food on the shelves, there might be kids staying home all day from school. We don’t know.” He said.Now they're looking at their backyard in a different way. “We’ve got the pool for washing if we needed it... So this is the drinking water should we need it, we have two generators.”Even their kids are aware and prepared to help. “I got it in case the coronavirus comes here," Shelby, 7, said showing us her medical kit.The family hopes they don't ever have to use their stockpile but are prepared just in case. 2197
