VISTA (CNS) - A 59-year-old motorist was killed Friday in a solo crash on state Route 78 near Shadowridge Golf Club.The man lost control of the Ford F-150 for unknown reasons while driving in the far left-hand westbound lane of the freeway west of Sycamore Avenue in Vista shortly after 12:30 p.m., according to the California Highway Patrol.The vehicle veered to the right, crossing all lanes before leaving the roadway, plunging down an embankment and striking a tree, CHP public-affairs Officer Mark Latulippe said.Paramedics took the motorist, an Oceanside resident, to Palomar Medical Center, where he was pronounced dead. VIRGINIA BEACH, Va.— The new virtual school year comes with challenges for many students, but one nonprofit is teaming up with a Virginia Beach business to help give kids the space they need to succeed.“When children have a place to sit down and learn, they’re going to do much better,” said George Melnyk Jr., President of Premier Millwork and Lumber Company.Melnyk’s wife, Kim, is a Virginia Beach School Board member. They decided to take on a project to make desks for CHIP, a child readiness non-profit advocacy program.“They’re going primarily to low-income homes, kids that just need a desk,” said Trish O’Brien, President of CHIP of South Hampton Roads.Machines and manpower are churning out the pieces that will become desks for hundreds of CHIP families.There’s no hardware, no tools, just four pieces that easily interlock in under a minute to create a temporary space that a child can call their own at no cost to mom and dad.“At the end of the day, they can disassemble them, slide them under the couch, stick them in the closet, put them away for the weekend, and then the next day, put them back together and be ready to work,” said Melnyk.Each desk cost .50 to build thanks to employees who are donating their time to keep labor costs at zero.Last Saturday, the crew built 110 desks. It plans to welcome its first guests in 2022."Our goal is to make space accessible to all," Frank Bunger, CEO and founder of Orion Span, said in a statement. "Upon launch, Aurora Station goes into service immediately, bringing travelers into space quickly and at a lower price point than ever seen before."Astronaut experienceWhile a million trip is outside the budget of most people's two-week vacations, Orion Span claims to offer an authentic astronaut experience.Says Bunger, it has "taken what was historically a 24-month training regimen to prepare travelers to visit a space station and streamlined it to three months, at a fraction of the cost."During their 12-day adventure, the super-rich travelers will fly at a height of 200 miles above the Earth's surface in Low Earth Orbit, or LEP, where they will witness incredible views of the blue planet.The hotel will orbit Earth every 90 minutes, which means guests will see around 16 sunrises and sunsets every 24 hours.Hometown heroActivities on board include taking part in research experiments such as growing food while in orbit -- which guests can take home for a super-smug souvenir -- and soaring over their hometown.Guests can have live video chats with their less-fortunate loved ones back home via high-speed wireless Internet access and, upon return to Earth, will be greeted with a specially arranged hero's welcome.While enjoying the thrills of zero gravity, the travelers will be able to float freely through the hotel, taking in views of the northern and southern aurora from the station's windows.Deposits are already being accepted for future stays on the space hotel.
