SAN DIEGO (CNS) - The San Diego Animal Welfare Coalition today will join a nationwide effort to ``Clear the Shelters'' today for the duration of August. The campaign to get as many pets adopted as possible is a little different this year. The Clear the Shelters event, instead of being a single- day effort, will be a month-long adoption drive to allow for virtual adoption consultations by appointment. In addition to promoting adoptions, the campaign encourages donations to participating shelters.``San Diego Humane Society is excited to be working to ``Clear the Shelters,'''' says Gary Weitzman, president and CEO of San Diego Humane Society. ``This important nationwide campaign will give tens of thousands of animals throughout San Diego County a second chance.''Since 2015, the Clear the Shelters campaign has helped more than 410,000 pets find new homes nationwide.``The County of San Diego's Department of Animal Services shelters in Bonita and Carlsbad have many wonderful animals waiting to be adopted into loving homes,'' said Kelly Campbell, director of animal services for the county. ``While the pandemic has certainly created challenges for us all, now may be the perfect time to add a new pet to the family, especially if you find yourself spending more time at home.''The San Diego Humane Society said benefits of adopting a pet include being more affordable, knowing the animal has been assessed for behavior and medical conditions and allowing prospective owners to receive pet-specific resources. The society offers training advice, pet supplies and educational information to support pet families for the lifespan of a pet. ``During the pandemic, we have learned how to embrace change, and that change could include an adoptable pet,'' said Judi Sanzo, president of Rancho Coastal Humane Society. ``Shelters around the country want to remind you that your new best friend could be waiting, tail wagging and ready to join you while you work from home. While Rancho Coastal continues to match pets with their new families, it's important to remember that the virus may be temporary, but pets are a lifetime commitment.'' 2148

SAN DIEGO (CNS) - San Diego Gulls coach Dallas Eakins was Monday named the coach of its NHL parent team, the Anaheim Ducks.Eakins coached the Gulls throughout their four seasons in the American Hockey League, guiding them to a 154-95-23 record and three Calder Cup playoff berths. They reached the Western Division finals in the recently concluded 2018-19 season. The Gulls had the best record in the AHL's Pacific Division since its inception in the 2015-16 season. The 52-year-old Eakins called his hiring as the Ducks' coach ``a tremendous honor for my family.''``I am truly humbled,'' Eakins said. ``It was a privilege to serve as head coach of the San Diego Gulls during our first four seasons and I look forward to build off that success here in Anaheim.''Eakins replaces Randy Carlyle, who was fired on Feb. 10. General manager Bob Murray was the interim coach for the remainder of the season. The Ducks were 35-37-10 in the 2018-19 season, finishing sixth in the NHL's eight-team Pacific Division and missing the Stanley Cup playoffs for the first time since the 2011-12 season.``Dallas is an outstanding head coach who has worked well with our players since joining the organization four years ago,'' Murray said. ``He is a tremendous leader and strategist, and deserves this opportunity.''Eakins coached the NHL's Edmonton Oilers to a 36-63-14 record from the start of the 2013-14 season until being fired 31 games into the 2014-15 season after Edmonton got off to a 7-19-5 start. He coached the AHL's Toronto Marlies, the Toronto Maple Leafs AHL affiliate, to a 157-114-4 record from 2009-13, guiding them to the 2012 Calder Cup Final, where they lost to the Norfolk Admirals.Eakins was also an assistant coach with the Marlies in the 2005-2006 season and with the Maple Leafs from 2006-2008.Eakins played 16 seasons of professional hockey as a defenseman, mainly in the AHL. SAN DIEGO (CNS) - San Diego City officials Saturday will rededicate a Skyline-area police substation in honor of a patrolman gunned down nearly four decades ago during a traffic stop two blocks from where the precinct house now stands. The SDPD Southeastern Division headquarters will be renamed the Archie Buggs Memorial Building during a late-morning ceremony on the 39th anniversary of the slaying. Two of the late lawman's relatives -- his sister, Gwen Buggs, and cousin, Pam Jones -- are scheduled to be present for the event.Buggs, 30, came under fire in the early morning hours of Nov 4, 1978, after stopping a 1968 Chevrolet driven by 17-year-old gang member Jesus Cecena in the 7100 block of Skyline Drive. The teen fired five times at Buggs, then paused, walked toward the downed officer and shot him in the head at point-blank range. Buggs died on the street, his hand on his service revolver.Cecena was convicted of murder and sentenced to serve life in prison without the possibility of parole in August 1979. Because of his age at the time of the killing, his sentence was reduced to a seven-years-to-life term in 1982.Three years ago, a change in the law made Cecena eligible for youth offender parole. His release was approved by the state Parole Board in April 2014, but Gov. Jerry Brown overturned the panel's recommendation that September, then did so again two years later and once more four months ago.Cecena, 56, has received more than 10 violation reports for misconduct while in prison, according to the San Diego County District Attorney's Office.Among local leaders slated to take part in this morning's renaming ceremony in the 7200 block of Skyline Drive will be Mayor Kevin Faulconer, police Chief Shelley Zimmerman, City Council President Myrtle Cole and District Attorney Summer Stephan. 1824

SAN DIEGO (CNS) - The entire passenger and freight rail line between Oceanside and San Diego will be closed at midnight and remain shut down all weekend for improvements, according to the San Diego Association of Governments.Crews will shut down the lines just after midnight Saturday through 5 a.m. Monday, according to SANDAG, which will make several improvements, including work on the Mid-Coast Trolley project, extending the UC San Diego blue line trolley from the Santa Fe Depot in Downtown San Diego north toward UC San Diego.Four rail services use the San Diego segment of the Los Angeles-San Diego-San Luis Obispo coastal rail corridor: North County Transit District, Metrolink, Amtrak and the BNSF freight line.Passengers using the Coaster train line are advised to use the BREEZE Route 101 or local buses. Amtrak will offer bus connections from Oceanside to San Diego for passengers with reservations.Crews working on the Mid-Coast Trolley project will remove temporary support structures, build retaining walls, protect slopes and install fencing and cable railing, as well as sewer, water, and drainage pipes. The entire project is expected to be completed late next year.Near the San Diego River Bridge, crews will add nearly a mile of double track across the river to create a continuous 7-mile stretch of double track in the southernmost portion of the coastal rail corridor.During construction, nearby residents and businesses can expect intermittent noise and lights.Passenger rail service is scheduled to resume for the Monday morning commute. 1569

SAN DIEGO (CNS) - The Metropolitan Transit System is increasing bus and trolley services as the economy continues to reopen.MTS will increase weekday midday service on the UC San Diego Blue Line beginning Monday, June 15, followed by service increases on dozens of bus routes in late June."As we continue the regional reopening of our economy, we know more people will need the services that MTS provides. We want people to know that San Diego's transit system will continue to be a safe and reliable option as possible," said MTS Board Chair Nathan Fletcher. "We've strengthened our already-enhanced sanitizing protocols on vehicles and at stations and implemented policies to better protect our passengers and employees. We are now increasing service to help reliability and allow for greater physical distancing of passengers."Beginning Monday, the UC San Diego Blue Line trolley -- which connects the San Ysidro international border to downtown San Diego -- will increase its service frequency to every 7 1/2 minutes from 4:30 a.m. until 7 p.m., and keep 15-minute frequencies until 9 p.m., followed by every 30 minutes until the end of the service day.Weekday ridership on the Blue Line plummeted 69% between February 24 and April 20, from 63,715 daily riders to just 19,787. Since April 20, average weekday ridership has increased 28%, topping out at 25,367 the week of June 1. More frequency will give more opportunity for passengers to practice social distancing on board and on platforms when possible. Service on the Orange Line and Sycuan Green Line will remain unchanged. While trolley service will first be increasing to closely mirror pre- COVID-19 levels, MTS is also making preparations to increase bus service in the coming weeks. Schedules and routes are being finalized. The goal is to provide service increases that meet market demands. MTS reduced weekday service levels approximately 25% on April 13 to address record-low ridership while still providing critical service for essential workers and trips. In addition to service increases, MTS says it also continues to improve its already-strict safety and sanitizing protocols. The latest development on that front is retrofitting buses with germ barriers to better protect bus operators. Barriers will also allow the agency to return to front- door boarding, which gives passengers more room in which to spread out. MTS has only allowed rear-door boarding since April 1 to protect the health of bus operators.MTS continues to operate about 95 bus routes and three trolley lines. Frequencies and spans have been modified due to COVID-19. Updated schedules can be accessed on the MTS website. MTS asks that people wear face coverings and practice physical distancing at all times. 2757
