The US economy officially entered a recession in February as CDC leaders predicted that the US would experience community spread of the virus. There is no sign the US is poised to exit out of a recession.“There are other areas and we’ve talked about (a shutdown): medical problems and everything else that get put on hold,” Mnuchin said. “I think it was very prudent what the president did, but I think we’ve learned a lot.”Chairman of the Federal Reserve Jerome Powell told reporters on Wednesday that getting the economy back to where it was before the coronavirus began to spread could take time.“My assumption is there will be a significant chunk, well into the millions -- I don't want to give you a number because it's going to be a guess -- but well, well into the millions of people who don't get to go back to their old job and in fact there may not be a job in the industry for them for some time, there will eventually be but it could be some years before we get back to those people finding jobs,” Powell said. "When people lose a job, they can find a job in their own industry, that's the fastest way and no other people in the industry, different kinds of jobs, that's usually the fastest.“If you have to go and start over again it's much harder and that's where you lose people who fall out of the labor force and is very tough on their lives, we all know people.”Unemployment reached its highest level since the Great Depression in April. AURORA, Colo. — Three Aurora Police Department officers who were fired last week over their involvement in taking a picture in front of the memorial for Elijah McClain while mocking the chokehold officers used on him before his death, then sending it in a group text, have appealed their dismissals.Officers Erica Marrero and Kyle Dittrich both submitted their appeals on Wednesday, Aurora spokesperson Michael Bryant said. The Aurora Civil Service Commission will next schedule hearing dates within 15 to 30 days, though those hearings could be pushed back if extensions are filed.Marrero and Dittrich were two of the three officers pictured in the photos taken last October. A third officer in the photos, Jaron Jones, resigned last week before he could be fired.And on Thursday evening, Bryant confirmed that a fourth officer involved in a group text in which the photos were sent, Jason Rosenblatt, who was also fired because he responded "ha ha" to the photos, had filed an appeal over his termination.The fired officers had 10 days to file an appeal from last Friday.“It is my prerogative," Aurora’s Interim Police Chief Vanessa Wilson said in announcing last week the terminations. "And the public outcry and demand for justice for Elijah — they don't deserve to wear a badge anymore. I accelerated [the discipline process], and I was able to do that legally and I felt it was the right thing for this community."The photos were taken on Oct. 20, 2019, nearly two months after McClain's violent encounter with police. Dittrich, Marrero and Jones were on duty and had completed a service call in the area where McClain was detained in August.The three officers posed for a selfie, with Dittrich taking the photo and Jones putting his arm around Dittrich's neck, according to department investigative documents released Friday.Dittrich then texted the photo to two officers, Rosenblatt and Nathan Woodyard, who was also involved in the original McClain incident.Woodyard did not respond and deleted the photo, Wilson said. Woodyard was not disciplined in the incident.Rosenblatt responded, "ha ha," according to the investigation.McClain, 23, was unarmed when he was encountered by Aurora police on Aug. 24, 2019. Police put McClain in a carotid hold, which limits blood flow to the brain, after stopping him while he was walking home. When he became unresponsive, paramedics gave him ketamine, police have said.McClain had a heart attack and died six days later.The officers involved in McClain's death were not arrested or charged, despite continued calls for justice from McClain's family and supporters.In June, as McClain's death garnered national interest, Gov. AURORA, Colo. -- When Amy and Marco Becerra adopted a 3-year-old Peruvian girl last April, they had no idea what kind of ordeal it would be to get approval for her to stay in the U.S.The Aurora couple, both U.S. citizens, had been living in Peru and had been taking care of their adopted daughter Angela since she was 12 days old.After getting clearance from the Peruvian courts to adopt Angela, they began planning to come back to the U.S. But Angela's application for immigration kept getting delayed."We had been reaching out to USCIS (United States Citizenship & Immigration Services) for over a year, asking and sometimes begging, and sometimes crying for help," Amy Becerra said. She said the people answering USCIS's 1-800 number would simply recite what was on their website, and that some of the information conflicted with information on another government agency website.Tourist VisaThe Becerras brought Angela to Colorado on a tourist visa, and continued their efforts to get Immigration officials to grant her citizenship.Earlier this month, they learned their request had been denied.It came as a shock."No one can believe that would happen to two U.S. Citizens," Amy Becerra said.The couple went public with their plight.Congressman gets involvedRepublican Colorado Congressman Mike Coffman then got involved. "What a broken immigration system that would even think about deporting a 4-year-old," Coffman said.On Thursday, Coffman held a news conference to announce that USCIS had reversed course."They said they re-opened it due to the complexities of the case," he said, adding that he believes the agency bowed to public pressure which was a result of all of Amy Becerra's hard work.The Becerras will now be able to reapply for Angela's citizenship papers.The Congressman's Communications Director Daniel Bucheli said it should be automatic since both parents are U.S. Citizens.He said Coffman offered to pay the ,040 application fee out of his own personal account."I feel very grateful," Marco Becerra said. ATLANTA — Leading congressional Democrats are reacting furiously to lightly-substantiated claims that immigrants held at a detention center in Georgia are undergoing questionable hysterectomies.In a complaint filed Monday, a nurse alleges that the Irwin County Detention Center performed questionable hysterectomies, refused to test detainees for COVID-19 and shredded medical records.Democrats seized on the most explosive allegations in her complaint, that a gynecologist called the “uterus collector” was performing “mass hysterectomies.”A top medical official with U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement released a statement “vehemently” disputing the claims, according to the Washington Post, saying only two women have been referred for hysterectomies from the facility since 2018.A follow-up news conference Tuesday in Atlanta provided little information to substantiate the claims. The nurse, Dawn Wooten, and her lawyers refused to release her full statement made to the Department of Homeland Security’s Inspector General. She also declined to take questions after making comments to the media.Wooten worked full-time as a licensed practical nurse at the immigration detention facility until July, when she was demoted. She had missed some work because she had coronavirus symptoms, according to NBC. Wooten says she was demoted because she asked her superiors about the lack of COVID-19 testing and PPE at the facility.The gynecologist is not named in Wooten’s whistleblower complaint.
