(KGTV) - California representatives are calling on the government to fund the Storm Damage Reduction Project, hoping to stabilize cliffs along North San Diego County beaches.At Grandview Beach in Encinitas flowers surrounded the beach entrance sign Thursday. Down on the beach caution tape hung around the cliffs, serving as a somber reminder of the three women who died three weeks ago after a bluff collapse.Two days before the tragedy, Representative Mike Levin said he asked for federal funds to stabilize the cliffs from Encinitas to Solana Beach. "It's long past time for the federal government to uphold its responsibility here," he said.He championed the Storm Damage Reduction Project that was approved by Congress in 2016.The project would dredge tons of sand from the ocean and dump it on the beach to protect the cliffs from powerful, eroding waves.Environmentalists are concerned that would destroy tidal ecosystems. Thorough monitoring is going to be of the utmost importance to see how this project impacts coastal ecosystems (including Marine Protected Areas) and impacts to recreation (such as surfing, snorkeling, etc.). Surfrider highly advocates against future seawalls and other coastal armoring. (KGTV) - A driver under the influence of a drug struck and injured a Caltrans worker on Interstate 15 in Escondido Thursday, the California Highway Patrol said.A Nissan Sentra driven by a 26-year-old man was headed south on the freeway south of 9th Ave. about 10 a.m. and struck the Caltrans-owned Dodge Ram truck which was stopped in the center divider near the HOV lane. Officers said the Nissan’s driver allowed his car to drift into the center divider.The Caltrans worker had moderate injuries. The Nissan’s driver complained of pain but refused treatment at the scene. One of his male passengers suffered major injuries; other had moderate injuries.CHP officers evaluated the Nissan driver and arrested him at the scene on suspicion of DUI. 776

Evacuations have been ordered for northern Arizona communities due to the Tinder Fire burning near Happy Jack.According to Coconino County officials, evacuations were ordered Sunday by the Coconino County Sheriff's Office for affected communities north, east and west of Highway 87 including Moqui Ranchettes, all of Starlight Pines, Clear Creek (except 1 and 2), all of Timber Ranch, all of Tamarron, Pine Canyon, Blue Ridge Estates, Ponderosa Pines, and Mogollon Ranches. The evacuation will be in effect until further notice, deputies will stay in the area to provide 24-hour security.  The fire has burned an estimated 8,000 acres and is burning 1.5 miles northeast of Blue Ridge Reservoir.
