Former President Barack Obama is cautioning activists against using slogans like “defund the police” to achieve policy changes.Obama spoke with Peter Hamby on Snapchat’s “Good Luck America” and was responding to a question about activists who use “defund the police” as a rallying cry."If you believe, as I do, that we should be able to reform the criminal justice system so that it's not biased and treats everybody fairly, I guess you can use a snappy slogan like 'Defund The Police,' but, you know, you lost a big audience the minute you say it, which makes it a lot less likely that you're actually going to get the changes you want done," Obama said.Instead, Obama encouraged them to have a more inclusive discussion with all stakeholders.“If you instead say, 'Let's reform the police department so that everybody's being treated fairly, you know, divert young people from getting into crime, and if there was a homeless guy, can maybe we send a mental health worker there instead of an armed unit that could end up resulting in a tragedy?' Suddenly, a whole bunch of folks who might not otherwise listen to you are listening to you,” Obama said.Top elected Democrats, including president-elect Joe Biden and House Majority Whip Jim Clyburn of South Carolina, have said publicly they support changes to policing practices but warned the phrase “defund the police” -- which calls for redirecting some municipal funds from police departments toward social welfare programs -- could be harmful. Many progressives, however, including New York Rep. Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez, have often repeated the phrase. In response to Obama’s interview, Rep. Ilhan Omar, a close ally of Ocasio-Cortez, tweeted a sharp rebuke.“We lose people in the hands of police. It’s not a slogan but a policy demand. And centering the demand for equitable investments and budgets for communities across the country gets us progress and safety,” Rep. Omar’s tweet reads. 1949

FORT MYERS, Fla. -- A medical examiner's report shows a 17-year-old girl who died of COVID-19 may have contracted the coronavirus at a church party in Florida. In the report, it says the party Carsyn Davis attended on June 10 had about 100 people there. It said none of them were wearing masks, and only three days later, the Fort Myers teen started showing symptoms. The church is defending itself against criticism on social media, saying on Facebook that it did not ignore protocols or intentionally expose children to the virus, and that media reports suggesting these things are “absolutely false and defamatory.”However, a gathering of that size and the lack of masks is against both Florida Department of Health and CDC guidelines. The report also shows that after Davis started experiencing symptoms, her parents didn’t immediately take her to the hospital. They instead treated her with two prescription medications, one of which was hydroxychloroquine.“I read a few of the recent studies on hydroxychloroquine, and some of the reports, and it has shown some promise, but that’s all. It’s not that it’s totally effective," said Dr. Jay Gupta at Florida Gulf Coast University. Gupta said it’s not a drug you should ever try without talking with a doctor. The medical examiner report shows that on June 19, Davis had her oxygen levels drop when her mother measured them. Gupta said that’s a big warning sign.“If they’re having breathing trouble, then they should certainly go to a doctor," said Gupta. But Davis didn’t see a doctor.Instead, the report said her mother, a nurse, put her on an oxygen tank they had in the house for her grandfather. When that didn’t work, she was taken to the hospital on June 20. Davis died only two days after being hospitalized, according to the report. It also shows that, when in the hospital, her parents decided not to have her put on a ventilator. This story was originally published by Rob Manch at WFTX. 1955

For years, the incredible discovery of the Titanic's wreckage at the bottom of the ocean in 1985 was thought to have been a purely scientific effort. But that was a ruse.Speaking to CNN on Thursday about now-declassified events, Robert Ballard, who discovered the Titanic, said that the expedition was part of a secret US military mission to recover two sunken nuclear submarines on the bottom of the ocean."They did not want the world to know that, so I had to have a cover story," Ballard said. The true story of what happened now serves as a museum exhibit at The National Geographic Museum in Washington, which is open through the end of the year.Ballard was a commander in the US Navy and a scientist at the Woods Hole Oceanographic Institution. The Navy offered him the funding and opportunity to search for the Titanic, but only if he first explored the USS Thresher and the USS Scorpion, two American nuclear subs that sank in the 1960s."We knew where the subs were," Ballard said. "What they wanted me to do was go back and not have the Russians follow me, because we were interested in the nuclear weapons that were on the Scorpion and also what the nuclear reactors (were) doing to the environment."The search for the Titanic served as a great cover story, and the press was "totally oblivious to what I was doing," he said. When his team finished exploring the Scorpion and Thresher, they had just 12 days left in their trip to search for the Titanic. The famed ship that sank on its maiden voyage was found on the ocean floor at a depth of more than 12,000 feet in the North Atlantic Ocean."When we found the Titanic, we naturally were very excited, because it was a tough job. We got it, scoring the winning goal at the buzzer," Ballard said. The famous discovery set off major press attention, but the expedition's true purpose was kept under wraps. A New York Times story from the days after the discovery features a series of denials from officials about the project.Navy spokesman Capt. Brent Baker said at the time that the project was simply to test if the oceanographic system worked, and a scientist denied a military involvement.''There was nothing classified,'' Dr. Robert Spindel, the head of the Woods Hole Ocean Engineering Department, told the Times. Not so, Ballard admitted, and that wasn't the only one."I cannot talk about my other Navy missions, no," he said. "They have yet to be declassified." 2450

Former Vice President Joe Biden said a candidate's age is a "legitimate" issue in elections -- including if he were to run for president in 2020."I think age is a totally legitimate thing to raise," Biden said during a question and answer session at the Economic Club of Southwestern Michigan's Speaker Series Tuesday. "I think it's totally appropriate for people to look at me and say if I were to run for office again, 'Well God darn you're old.' Well chronologically I am old.""Every voter is entitled to know exactly what kind of shape you're in. You owe it to them. It's a legitimate question and so I think age is relevant," he added.Biden's comments came in response to a question about whether term limits or a mandatory retirement age should be implemented for members of Congress or the Supreme Court.Biden is currently 75 years old, and if he runs for president in 2020, he would be 77 when the caucus and primary contests get underway. The potential Democratic field includes other possible contenders who would be in their seventies come 2020 -- like Sen. Bernie Sanders and Sen. Elizabeth Warren, currently 77 and 69, respectively. They could face off against a crop of younger possible candidates, like Sen. Cory Booker, currently 49, and Sen. Kamala Harris, currently 53.President Donald Trump is currently 72 years old.Biden has said he will make a decision about whether to run for president in 2020 by January. During the event, someone in the crowd shouted, "Run, Joe, Run!""No, no, no!" Biden said in the same cadence, which prompted laughter from the audience. "Thank you. It's very flattering."Biden then grew emotional talking about his family's struggle since the death of his son Beau in 2015."A lot of you have been through a lot tougher times than I and you know when you lose a son or a daughter. It takes some time for the family to sort of be there. We're working through it," he said."I know Beau would want me to run, but honest answer is no man or woman should ask for your vote for president unless they with all your heart and soul can look you in the eye and say 'I promise you all my effort, all my attention, all, all my heart, all of my soul,'" he said. "And I'm not quite sure, I'm not sure quite sure I'm there yet."When some shouted "Jill would be great!" referencing Biden's wife, he responded, "She would! She would! I'd vote for her!"On the issue of term limits and mandatory retirement age, Biden said, "I think it's up to the judgment of the people whether or not the person that holds that office in fact has the capacity to hold the office." 2599
