Can you imagine a pile of trash twice the size of Texas? That's what's floating in the Pacific Ocean right now.A group started an ambitious project to clean it up.Boyan Slat, founder of The Ocean Cleanup, has waited five years to see his idea put into action. That idea consists of a 2,000-foot long barrier, with a 10-foot skirt below that’ll help get plastic out of the ocean.“2,000 feet is a pretty big clean up system, and just imagining that the future one will probably be you know maybe twice as large,” says Slat.It's work starts at the Great Pacific Garbage Patch--an area between California and Hawaii--with a pile of trash three times the size of France.  “You go out there, it's all blue. The thing is you're all miles away from any human activity and you start to see like objects that you can see in your kitchen,” says Laurent Lebreton, lead oceanographer. “So, it's just very striking like you wouldn't expect.”The system will corral the plastic floating on the surface, so fish and other ocean life can swim underneath. Then, smaller boats take the plastic back to shore for recycling. The Ocean Cleanup says it can extract 50 percent of the plastic in the patch every five years.  “That's a huge goal,” says Dr. Mikki McColb-Kobza, with Ocean First Institute. “If they are able to do that, I think that is a really big dent into the problem.”Dr. McColb-Kobza says the system is meeting an unaddressed need.  “There really haven't been a lot of other projects trying to go out and bring trash bag to try and figure out a way to bring it back,” he says.  Still, some say the system creates a false sense of security, and more focus should be placed on keeping plastic out of the ocean to begin with.  But Dr. McColb-Kobza says the project is a great way to get that conversation started.  “Really the key is not only to clean up what is there, but it's to think about why you know do we live in this plastic throw a way society.”   1990

CHICAGO — A special prosecutor in Chicago says Cook County State’s Attorney Kim Foxx and her office abused their discretion in the case against actor Jussie Smollett but did nothing criminal. In a statement on the conclusions of his investigation, special prosecutor Dan Webb sharply criticized the handling of the Smollett case by Foxx and her assistant prosecutors, saying their handling was marked by disarray and misleading statements.In his conclusion, Webb wrote that the investigation “did not develop evidence that would support any criminal charges against State’s Attorney Foxx or any individual working at (her office)” but “did develop evidence that establishes substantial abuses of discretion and operational failures”In March last year, Foxx’s office surprised and angered many in Chicago by dropping charges that accused the former “Empire” actor of staging a racist, homophobic attack against himself. CARLSBAD (CNS) - Attorneys for the alleged victims of a former Carlsbad military boarding school headmaster whose molestation conviction was overturned last week by a state appellate panel asked the San Diego County District Attorney's Office Wednesday to appeal the ruling or retry the case against him.Jeffrey Barton, 62, was convicted in 2017 of five felony counts of forcible oral copulation and one felony count of forcible sodomy for allegedly molesting a cadet at the Army and Navy Academy beginning in 1999, when the alleged victim was 14 years old.Barton was sentenced to 48 years in state prison.A three-justice panel from the Fourth District Court of Appeal agreed with Barton's contentions that the trial judge should not have dismissed one of the jurors during the trial and reversed the conviction on Friday.RELATED: Appeals court reverses molestation conviction for former Carlsbad boarding school headAttorney John Manly, whose firm represents four alleged victims in civil suits filed against Barton and the academy, said, "We disagree with the ruling of the court of appeal. At this time, we are exploring our appellate options, which include retrial."The convictions came in Barton's second trial.In his first trial, almost two years before, a different jury deadlocked on the charges involving the alleged victim.Two other former Army and Navy Academy students testified in the first trial that they were molested by Barton, but the defendant was acquitted on all but one of the counts involving those victims.The appellate panel ruled that Barton's second trial could have concluded differently had one juror not been excused, allegedly for refusing to deliberate with her fellow panelists.The justices wrote in their ruling that the other jurors appeared to disagree with Juror No. 12, but did not provide enough of a showing that she was actively stalling deliberations.The ruling indicates the juror did not appear to find the alleged victim credible."The trial court's error in discharging Juror No. 12 warrants reversal," the panel wrote. "She was the lone holdout juror who consistently held to her belief Barton was not guilty and, had she remained on the jury, it is reasonably probable the case would have ended in a mistrial, a more favorable result for Barton than conviction."The panel wrote that Barton was convicted "within hours" of the juror being discharged. 2921

BUFFALO, N.Y. — When a man's car was damaged in an alleged hit-and-run accident, it was a note from a sixth grader who helped him find who was responsible.According to Andrew Sipowicz, he received an anonymous note on his car from a student at Houghton Academy explaining that she had been aboard a bus that had damaged his car in an accident. The bus driver then fled the scene.Sipowicz shared the note alongside two pictures on his Twitter feed with the caption: "Shoutout to the anonymous 6th grader for saving me a couple thousand (Bus not drawn to scale)."As of early Wednesday afternoon, Sipowicz's tweet has been liked more than half a million times and retweeted more than 100,000 times.He later noted on Twitter that he had found the girl who wrote the letter and was "in the process of finding a way to reward her for her actions." 869
