(KGTV) -- The quest for Black Friday deals had San Diego malls packed Friday. But there were those who beat the crowds by getting their shopping done under the full moon.  "We started at like 8:30 [last night]," said one woman shopping with her sister at 4:30 a.m. at the Carlsbad Outlets. The mall had opened their Black Friday event at 6 p.m. Thursday with no closing time until 10 p.m. Friday. That meant those willing to shop all night, had free reign to scour the deals with a lot less competition.  "I think the only reason we're here at this time, said the woman, "is because there's no lines. And we can leave our kids at home. They're sleeping while we can shop."  Of course, an all night shopping event doesn't happen without workers.   "I started last night at 5pm." Said the manager of Joe's Jeans as the clock neared 5:30am.  Asked how she was holding up, she replied, "I'm doing good. I'm off in a little bit."  "Have a great day you guys." A door monitor at Tory Burch said to two customers leaving the store as she turned to others in line to get in. "I can let two in."  High end hand bags and purses, with prices slashed 50 to 75 percent, were selling fast.  Other irresistible deals were at the Disney Store.  "We've got Princess stuff. We have Toy Story stuff," said one mother sifting through bags of new toys. "It was about 250 dollars for everything in these bags. So, pretty good deal for three full bags of toys."  1567

A bipartisan group of senators has failed to reach an agreement on stabilizing Obamacare in 2018.Tennessee Sen. Lamar Alexander, who chaired a set of health committee hearings with Democratic Sen. Patty Murray of Washington, said Tuesday that the effort to craft a "limited, bipartisan plan" to take to Senate leaders by the end of September had come to a standstill."During the last month, we have worked hard and in good faith, but have not found the necessary consensus among Republicans and Democrats to put a bill in the Senate leaders' hands that could be enacted," Alexander said in a statement.Murray said she regretted Alexander's decision, noting the group had identified "significant common ground" and that she had agreed to give states additional flexibility over how they implement Obamacare. The halt comes as Republicans have revived an effort to repeal Obamacare before the end of the month, when their authority to pass a bill with a simple majority ends. The White House has launched a full-court press backing a bill authored by Sens. Lindsey Graham and Bill Cassidy that would dismantle major provisions of the health reform law and overhaul Medicaid."I am disappointed that Republican leaders have decided to freeze this bipartisan approach and are trying to jam through a partisan Trumpcare bill," Murray said in a statement, "but I am confident that we can reach a deal if we keep working

(KGTV) A same-sex couple says a staffer from a private school in Solana Beach told them to not submit their son’s application.Matthew Bosse and Joe Mosca are looking at middle schools for their 10-year-old son. They say Garrett earns exceptional grades and is as much a musician as he is a lacrosse player so several friends referred them to Santa Fe Christian Schools in Solana Beach.Bosse says during a phone call he told the SFCS staff member that he was married to a man.“That’s when she essentially said the values that are taught at the home are the values that are taught at school and we don’t think your family would be a good match,” said Bosse. The family regularly attends an Episcopalian church and says they’re a same-sex couple with Christian values.“You never expect to encounter such over discrimination,” said Mosca, who is also the Deputy Mayor of Encinitas.Since Santa Fe Christian Schools is private and receives no public funding, it does not have to follow state or federal anti-discrimination laws.In a statement to 10News SFCS wrote:"While we do not provide details on matters involving students or prospective students, I can say that our policy is to encourage the family of any student committed to academic excellence and spiritual development to apply. As a matter of practice, we do not attempt to persuade or dissuade prospective families from applying. At the same time, as part of the admissions process, we make clear to prospective applicants that they will be joining a Bible-based community designed to disciple students to embrace biblical truth. This is our mission and our purpose, and a vital component of the SFCS experience.”Bossa and Mosca say they have no ill-will towards SFCS, but they are sharing their account in order to start a dialogue. “We hope that they do some introspection,” said Bosse, “really, they discriminated against our son.” 1901

90-year-old Margaret Keenan of the United Kingdom became the first person to receive an initial dose of Pfizer's COVID-19 vaccine on Tuesday — a major landmark and something that officials are calling a "turning point" in the pandemic.Keenan, a retired store clerk, was the first in line at University Hospital in Coventry, England, to receive her first dose of a vaccine made by Pfizer and BioNTech. She turns 91 next week."It's the best early birthday present I could wish for because it means I can finally look forward to spending time with my family and friends in the New Year after being on my own for most of the year," she said, according to a statement released by the UK's National Health Service (NHS).According to CNN, the first shot was administered by nurse May Parsons."The last few months have been tough for all of us working in the NHS, but now it feels like there is light at the end of the tunnel," Parsons said, according to CNN.CNN and ABC News both report that the second person to receive the vaccine was an 81-year-old man named William Shakespeare, who hails from the same county where the famous playwright was born.England was the first Western country to approve Pfizer's vaccine for emergency use. The U.S. and the European Union are expected to grant their approval to the Pfizer vaccine in the coming days.Russia was the first country to approve a COVID-19 vaccine in August. However, the vaccine, dubbed "Sputnik V," was only tested on a few dozen people, and its rollout has been marked by public distrust and production issues.Pfizer's vaccine requires two shots, which need to be taken 28 days apart, which means Keenan, Shakespeare, and all others injected on Tuesday will need to return for another shot next month to reach full inoculation. The U.S. is also expected to approve a vaccine candidate made by Moderna in the coming days as well. U.S. health officials have said they hope to distribute initial doses of the vaccine to 20 million people across the country by the month's end.As in England, initial doses of COVID-19 in the U.S. are being reserved for older people in long-term care facilities healthcare workers. U.S. health officials believe vaccines will be widely available in the spring. 2249

(KGTV) — It's only October but stores are already preparing for the Thanksgiving shopping rush.TheBlackFriday.com has prepared, as well, with a list of stores that have announced they will be closed on Thanksgiving on Nov. 28. In recent years, more retailers have elected to close their doors on Thanksgiving, giving employees the chance to relax and families another reason to push the shopping itch off until after the holiday.Plus, a 2018 survey found that only about one-fourth of Americans prefer Thanksgiving openings while nearly half dislike them.Check out the list of stores below:(This list will be updated as more stores make announcements)A.C.
