SAN DIEGO (KGTV) -- An Ocean Beach woman was alarmed by a flier taped to her door saying "the antichrist will destroy anyone who worships him." Holly Raines said her 7-year-old son found the flier taped on their front door. “I started reading the letter but I was like half asleep so I started panicking a little bit because it just seemed very threatening and very intense,” Raines said. Several other neighbors say they got one too. The letter stated it was from New Life Christian Chapel, which is a few blocks away from where Raines lives in Ocean Beach. “It was very damning and then it has like a phrase that says ‘The antichrist will destroy anyone who worships him, there is no middle ground,’” she said. Raines said the flier quotes several Bible verses but found them far from comforting. “The words just aren’t very friendly, they talk about slaying lambs and antichrist and unrighteousness,” Raines said. It ended by inviting her to a home Bible study but she can't help but feel like the church crossed a line. “We have a lot of friends that go to church around here and a lot of the community churches here are awesome, they do great things,” Raines said. “The idea of taping anything on somebody’s door is a lot and this is a full document of typing. I mean if anyone wrote me a letter like that I would think it was an angry letter.”10News reached out to New Life Christian Chapel, and Pastor Thomas J. SAN DIEGO (KGTV) - An Orange County-based company believes it could change the current healthcare landscape with one-hour COVID-19 testing.According to officials at Fluxergy, initial tests by researchers using a synthetic SARS-CoV-2 virus suggest this system has the potential to change the landscape for point-of-care diagnostic testing for COVID-19. It would dramatically reduce the time it takes to get results and deliver those results directly at the patient’s bedside. The company said it could be able to identify the virus in as little as 45 minutes."The typical laboratory tests that you do in a central lab or the doctor's office, you collect the sample and get that sent out to a central lab," said Fluxergy President Tej Patel. "We do those same types of tests, but in a single device, I want to say that's the size of a small PC or a shoebox-size device."Last week, the research team at UC San Diego began an initial benchtop evaluation of the Fluxergy system using the SARS-CoV-2 virus from patients in San Diego the company said.Patel told 10News Fluxergy technology aims to take that same test, put it in a single device, and make it portable. He said the changes to the system will make for easier access by removing some medical barriers."Our goal is to kind of democratize testing and increase the accessibility to testing," Patel said. "So when you try to focus your system more on point-of-care testing, where you make testing much easier to gain access to, where you don't have to go through your doctor or other provider, and not have to worry about reimbursement. However, as noted, if the physician-scientists at UCSD obtain promising validation results using the system, they intend to begin immediate use of the diagnostic consistent with FDA's guidance and pursue an Emergency Use Authorization (EUA). SAN DIEGO (KGTV) – An annual toy giveaway for San Diego military families looked different this year because of the coronavirus pandemic, but the reason for the event remains the same.For this year’s Operation Holiday Joy, the San Diego Armed Services YMCA chose hundreds of local military families who needed a little extra help this holiday season.On Wednesday, at the Murphy Canyon Chapel on Santo Road, the YMCA handed out boxes of gift-wrapped toys, and even bicycles, to more than 1,000 kids.Families were given books, a mini Christmas tree, and a gift card.Tim Ney, executive director of the San Diego Armed Services YMCA, said that now more than ever it’s important to support military families, as they too must deal with the additional challenges brought on by the pandemic.“Spouse employment is 30 percent, it’s really high. The online education and we’re doing the Achievement Academy where we’re taking the kids during the day. And doing the online learning, then we do STEM activities with them afterwards,” said Ney.It’s a little bit of extra help these military families are extremely thankful for.Emily, who is a military wife, told ABC 10News, “We’re so grateful and we’re thankful and blessed that everyone is so generous to give military families support, especially during this pandemic. SAN DIEGO (KGTV) -- A San Diego native made history at the Ironman World Championships in Hawaii, becoming the first above-the-knee double amputee to finish what many consider the world's most grueling endurance race. Roderick Sewell crossed the finish line of the 140-mile triathlon race in 16 hours and 26 minutes and immediately embraced his mother. The two lived in San Diego homeless shelters when Sewell was growing up."It's amazing to see how far we've come in 20 years," said the 27-year-old.It's even more amazing when you consider that Sewell had never completed a marathon before Saturday's competition. The Ironman triathlon consists of a 2.4-mile swim, a 114-mile bike ride, and ends with a 26.2-mile marathon.On top of that, Sewell had only six months to train after receiving an invitation from the Ironman organization."I had no bike. I didn't own one" until a few months before the competition, said Sewell. Sewell raced with strategy help from his longtime friend and mentor Rudy Garcia-Tolson. Garcia-Tolson became the first above-the-knee double amputee to finish any Ironman 10 years ago."Back when I first met Roderick, he was about 8 years old. He was actually petrified of the water," Garcia-Tolson said. "Whatever life is throwing at you, mental or physical challenges, you have to fight and get over those and strive for better."Sewell, whose legs were amputated at 2 years old because he was born without tibias, credits much of his success to the San Diego-based Challenged Athletes Foundation. He was introduced to the group at 8 years old."I didn't do any kind of sports. I wasn't very physically active," he said. "And then I started with them and got started in every sport I could."CAF gave Sewell his first running blades at a time when he and his mother were living in homeless shelters."If I can inspire someone, it's a blessing," he said. "When people come up to me and tell me their stories, to me their stories seem more mind-blowing than my own," Sewell added. 2009
