LAKESIDE, Calif. (KGTV) -- While many drivers say a new Caltrans project in the East County is making SR-67 safer, some say it's literally making them sick to their stomach.Long considered one of the most dangerous roads in San Diego County, Caltrans is currently working on a million project to improve safety between Lakeside and Ramona.  A key part of the project is the installation of flexible posts called "channelizers" in the median.  Channelizers are bright yellow so they can be easily seen, helping prevent cars from drifting across the center into oncoming traffic."I think it'll save lives. I really do," Andy Jones tells 10News. Jones regularly drives the 67 for work. However, since the channelizers began being installed over the last few weeks, there have been a handful of reports of drivers becoming queasy.  One man told 10News the way the light reflects off the channelizers at night makes him feel nauseated.  The Ramona Sentinel reports that two people have called the Ramona Planning Board with similar complaints.Driver Donna Gines says the channelizers make her feel safer on her regular drives from Rancho Bernardo to Barona, but she can understand whey they could make some people feel ill."Some people don't react well to reflectors," she said. "It's kind of like a strobe light, maybe? And maybe it does make them dizzy."Caltrans tells 10News they have not received any direct complaints. However, after 10News raised the concern, Caltrans decided to do a review of how the channelizers are functioning.  They plan to send crews at different times of day to see if any changes need to be made. 1663

Lately in Youngstown, Ohio, raccoons' tiny, nimble, human-like hands are only the second scariest thing about them. The first? An outbreak of what residents have described as "zombie-like behavior" involving raccoons who bare their teeth, walk on their hind legs and don't seem to be afraid of humans.According to WKBN in Youngstown, police have taken more than a dozen calls about these incidents since the start of March. Resident Robert Coggeshall, speaking to WKBN, said he spotted one while he was walking his dogs. "He would stand up on his hind legs, which I've never seen a raccoon do before, and he would show his teeth and then he would fall over backward and go into almost a comatose condition," he said.Although raccoons are typically nocturnal animals, many of these incidents occurred in broad daylight. In "28 Days Later," the super-infective Rage virus is an evolved form of rabies transmitted from animals to humans, but the Ohio Department of Natural Resources thinks it's more likely this odd raccoon behavior is a side effect of canine distemper.Although the disease's name includes the word "canine," distemper can affect a number of animals with close evolutionary links to the canine genus, including skunks, ferrets, raccoons and even bears. According to the American Veterinary Medical Association, distemper "attacks the respiratory, gastrointestinal and nervous systems" of infected animals, eventually causing symptoms such as "circling behavior, head tilt, muscle twitches … seizures, and partial or complete paralysis" in its final stages. If this diagnosis is correct, raccoons baring their teeth at Youngstown people and pets aren't threatening to eat their brains -- they're experiencing facial muscle spasms as their nervous systems escape their conscious control.Distemper is not the T-Virus, and it's not transmissible to humans, but it's still pretty scary. Pet dogs can catch it from physical contact with infected animals or using contaminated sources of food and water. If you happen to see a "zombie" raccoon in your neighborhood, it's a good idea to make sure your pup is vaccinated and supervise them closely when they go outside. And keep Rick Grimes on speed dial. Just in case. 2244

LAKE ELSINORE, Calif. (KGTV) - Fire crews battled powerful winds on the fifth day of the Holy Fire, and finally gained ground on the 19,107 acre blaze. The fight Friday night was far from over as red hot embers glowed in the evening. Crews fear winds overnight could whip up flames.RELATED: Holy Fire: More than 20,000 evacuated as fast-moving wildfire races into Riverside CountyNeighbors heard the buzz of chainsaws as crews worked to build yet another firebreak up steep hills, hoping to protect nearby neighborhoods. One neighbor stayed behind to protect his block and described the blaze as it raged feet from homes Friday afternoon, "it’s just like Dantes inferno right now with the heat and the flames and the smoke," Scott Helmer said. "Twenty minutes ago this wasn’t even like this, you know it exploded."The fire grew more than 8,000 acres from Thursday evening, fueled by powerful, constantly changing winds, making the fight even more dangerous for firefighters. As of Friday night the fire was 19,107 acres and 10 percent contained. The smoke blackened the sky and ash rained down in clumps, making it difficult to breathe. The heat radiated from the flames, creating sweltering conditions for crews.VIDEO: Holy Fire suspect talking to firefightersThe fight from the air Thursday night continued through Friday, at a constant pace."Kept dumping and dumping and dumping over night probably every five minutes to make a pass over my house so essentially everyone in my neighborhood didn’t sleep but that’s okay," neighbor Carole Feeney said.Neighbors breathed a sigh of relief as the pink sun set over pink stained roads, homes and vehicles. "Out there, they're working hard, they’re nonstop. They have their fire fighters in the air, airstrike, on the ground and they’re, they just saved most of our structures," Feeney said, knowing the work fire crews have done is making progress. 1961

LAKESIDE, Calif. (KGTV) — Burglars raided the home of a cancer survivor in Lakeside, stealing her road bike days before she was planning on competing in a triathlon. In a home off Valle Vista Road, Susan Sterger made a wrenching discovery on Sunday night."When I walked into my bedroom, everything was torn apart." said Susanna Sterger, choking back tears. She and her roommates were cleaned out. Laptops, jewelry, clothes were stolen. She ran to the garage and her heart sank."Just felt really angry and violated," said Sterger.Missing from the garage: her triathlon bike, wet suit, running clothes, and even her shoes - everything she needed to compete in a triathlon on Sunday in Solana Beach."Everything I worked so hard for, I thought was taken from me in one moment," said Sterger. Four years ago, she experienced another heart-stopping moment: a diagnosis of cervical cancer. She went through many rounds of chemotherapy. The cancer returned five different times. "It's been really hard not to give up," said Sterger. She didn't and this May, doctors told her she was in remission. She began another battle - another tests of sorts - to train for a triathlon, her second in nine years."I want this with everything in my body," said Sterger. It's a goal she thought she'd never reach after the burglary. But through social media, something remarkable happened. Friends and strangers lent and donated her everything she needed, including a bike rental for the day."Don't have the words to describe the gratitude in my heart ... and I will be at that start line Sunday!" said Sterger.Sterger says neighbors saw a large group of teenage boys walking out of the home carrying stuff that night. Deputies say one of the boys has been arrested. If you have any information on the case, call the Lakeside Sheriff's substation at 619-956-4000.A Gofundme campaign has been set up to help Sterger buy a new triathlon bicycle. 1923
