SAN DIEGO (KGTV) - When William Hauf looks out his kitchen window, he sees rows of patio furniture that won't fit anywhere else."I just had to leave that stacked up out there," he says. "And I've got boxes of books in my garage right now that are unopened and brand new. Books that I haven't even seen yet."They're leftovers from Hauf's former, more successful life.In March, he sold his estate in Santaluz for million. Hauf had to sell it after losing millions of dollars himself in real estate and travel investments. RELATED: Making it in San Diego: Energy super-savers see summertime successHe's now renting a home in Carlsbad. Today, Hauf says he can't write a check for ,000. It's a key number because that's what San Diego Gas and Electric says he still owes them from his Santaluz home. Hauf got that roughly ,000 bill in March - an annual balance correction because the Santaluz home had solar, meaning he didn't have to pay monthly. SDG&E is now threatening to cut the electricity to his new home in Carlsbad if he doesn't pay the balance. "It's a nightmare, and I have no power to be able to confront this," Hauf said. SDG&E checked Hauf's meter in 2018, after a roughly ,000 annual bill. He said he hoped they would do more at the time. "They didn't investigate, they didn't identify, they didn't do an audit, they didn't do any of that," he said. Then came the ,000 whopper in March. In a statement, SDG&E noted that Hauf's bill worked out to 2 a month for the 7,600 square-foot Santaluz home. The company said it found no issues with the meter and that something in the home was being left on for long periods of time. SDG&E says it has advised Hauf to make sure his pool pump was not left running but Hauf said there's a big problem with that advice."There's no pool in the house," he said. "There's no swimming pool, there's no heater, there's no air conditioning."In other words, Hauf can't pinpoint what caused his annual bill to get to ,000 dollars, and he doesn't think SDG&E can either. A spokesman for SDG&E said the utility isn't always privy to the types of appliances customers have, but reiterated that Hauf's meter was functioning normally during that time. This is the utility's full statement:This solar customer received an annual true-up bill of ,111.46 for twelve months of energy use at his 7,600+ sq. foot home. If you average that out it would be approximately 2 per month. Over the past several years we have spoken with this customer regarding increasing energy usage and other billing related questions. In the spring of 2018, we tested the electric meter and found no issues. In a review of his March 2018 bill, we indicated that something in the household was turned on and left on for periods of time. The customer stated he would follow up with pool maintenance person to ensure the pump was not left running. 2904

SAN DIEGO (KGTV) — While California's new regional stay-at-home order forces many business sectors to close or adjust restrictions, the state is encouraging residents to continue outdoor recreation safely. In the new order, the state says, "to promote and protect the physical and mental well-being of people in California, outdoor recreation facilities may continue to operate." The order adds that outdoor recreation facilities cannot sell food or drink on-site. Overnight stays at campgrounds are also banned. According to San Diego County, campgrounds are open for day-use but county community centers, gyms, teen centers, and nature centers will be closed.RELATED:San Diego County attractions prepare to close amid new stay-at-home ordersCounty urges San Diegans to heed new health orders as COVID-19 cases surgeSan Diego restaurant workers dread latest shutdownCalifornia's order encourages residents to safely enjoy parks, the beach, hiking, walking, or bike riding with members of their own household.Gyms will be allowed to operate outdoors only under the order, while still meeting COVID-19 safety guidelines for outdoor recreation facilities."Gyms in counties in a region that is impacted by the order must stop indoor operations," California's website states. "Outdoor gyms meet the essential workforce definition of an outdoor recreational facility for the purpose of facilitating personal health through physically distanced outdoor exercise and may continue operations."In the City of San Diego, golf courses and pools that are already open can stay open, but reservations will be required. While parks and preserves remain open, playgrounds — outdoor and indoor — must close under the health order. Though at times outdoors, museums, zoos, aquariums, and family entertainment centers must also close.Outdoor recreation facilities will still require social distancing and mask-wearing, county and state public health officials say. The new regional stay-at-home order will last for at least three weeks starting Dec. 6 at 11:59 p.m., until the county is approved to move back to the state's blueprint for reopening tier system. 2148

SAN DIEGO (KGTV) -- Two people are dead after a car and semi-truck collided during a Border Patrol pursuit in Otay Mesa Tuesday night, agents say. SAN DIEGO (KGTV) - When you book a flight, your base price may not represent the final bill due to mounting airline fees. As 10News examines ways to make it in San Diego, we have solutions for saving money on travel. It's not your imagination: fees are part of the way airlines do business."Instead of just one price for everything, it's now an a la carte menu," said AAA spokesman Allan Gundy. The hidden charges don't just apply to your luggage. Gundy says fees can climb for seat selection, reservation changes and cancellation, beverages, and in-flight wifi.RELATED: Making It in San Diego: Getting to paradise on points this summerBefore you book, consider investing in a refundable ticket if you believe changes are possible. Also, many airlines charge higher fees to cancel within 24 hours of a flight, so act quickly if you know your travel plans need to be altered, AARP reports.Remember to download movies or games before you fly or, if you must have wifi, Grundy says to "sign up for a monthly subscription service like gogo, which is what most of the major U.S. airlines use."Food prices are high on planes, but you can buy snacks to take through TSA checkpoints and pick up beverages after security.RELATED: Making It in San Diego: What to know about using Tijuana airport's Cross Border XpressGundy also recommends you don't book the cheapest flight you find online because it may not be that great of a deal."Look at what all the additional fees would amount to and look at the total ticket cost," said Grundy. As for cutting down or skipping those fees altogether, there are a few things you can do. "There are airline branded credit cards that as a perk may offer free luggage," advises Gundy. You can also dodge fees by reaching out to a travel agent to find the best deals. 1798

SAN DIEGO (KGTV) — When faced with a hopeless medical diagnosis, a second opinion could save a person's life. Doctors at UC San Diego Health hope to make getting a second opinion easier and more affordable through their new Neurosurgery Second-Opinion Program. "They either feel affirmed in the clinical opinion they've already received or maybe have access to a surgical treatment that might not otherwise be offered to them," said Dr. Alex Khalessi, Professor and Chair of Neurological Surgery at UC San Diego Health. Through a secure online platform, UC San Diego Health offers easy access to world-renowned neurosurgeons through the program. The service costs patients 0, which Dr. Khalessi says is a few hundred dollars less than other programs nationwide. He says their goal is to make the program accessible to those who need it, even those thousands of miles away. "This is really an opportunity I think to give patients who are dealing with a problem they've never had to think of before a day in their lives, access to a person who spends every day thinking about that problem," said Dr. Khalessi.San Diego resident Glenn Callan credits a second opinion from Dr. Khalessi's team for saving his wife Patricia's life. While in remission for breast cancer doctors at their original San Diego hospital discovered a large tumor in Patricia's brain, but said the tumor was inoperable. "Devastating. You just think you escape this and then have this metastatic cancer go to the brain, it's unbelievable, surreal," said Glenn.Rather than accepting the original diagnosis, the Callan's went to UC San Diego Health, where doctors successfully removed the tumor."Things that would have been a death sentence or permanently disabling even five years ago, now we have a lot of very effective options to treat those problems," said Dr. Khalessi. The Neurosurgery Second-Opinion Program is available now for patients.UC San Diego Health hopes to soon pilot similar programs for oncology and orthopedics. 2008
