SAN DIEGO (KGTV) - San Diego Police investigated Wednesday threats made against multiple professors at University of San Diego. A flyer with gun crosshairs was slipped under the office doors of two professors, USD confirmed. The threats also included flyers with the professors’ names and pictures, calling them fascists and urging students to boycott their classes, 10News learned."A professor took responsibility for the flyers and the inappropriate behavior. The individual was suspended, removed from campus and is not permitted to return to campus or participate in any USD-related off-campus events while we conduct our investigation and initiate next steps. The professor has complied with these directives, has not returned to the campus, and to our knowledge, similar inappropriate behavior has not occurred," USD officials said.University officials said they notified San Diego Police upon learning about the threats last week. However, a police spokesperson said they just learned of the threats and opened their investigation today. At 4 p.m., faculty gathered for a meeting with administrators to learn about the situation. About the same time, students gathered in front of the Theology and Religious Studies building, saying they weren’t told about the threats. “The university has a duty and an obligation to protect public image. They have probably legal obligations, I'm assuming. But they also have an obligation to the student body. They have an obligation to make sure that we feel safe, that when I walk on this campus I'm aware if something's taken place that's put my safety or my professor's safety in danger,” said senior Alexa Withrow. A campus-wide email was sent out later Wednesday afternoon, telling students, "the Department of Public Safety and the San Diego Police Department were immediately contacted, an investigation was initiated and a communication was sent to the College faculty."Counseling was made available to students. One of the USD professors received a temporary restraining order against Associate Professor Louis Komjathy. The documents name Komjathy as the one responsible for the threats and say he was upset about a promotion he was denied. The restraining order was filed on September 6 and said the flyers had been found on September 1.There is a court hearing about the restraining order scheduled for September 26. 2379

SAN DIEGO (KGTV) -- San Diego is among the top cities for termites, according to a new ranking from Orkin. San Diego placed 11th among 50 other cities around the U.S., but America's Finest City wasn't alone. Los Angeles was ranked 2nd on the list. The company says all areas of the U.S. are prone to subterranean termites, but Pacific U.S. and coastal regions of the Southeast also have the threat of drywood termites. RELATED: Water rupture causes millions of dollars in damages to La Jolla homeTermites generally swarm based on favorable weather conditions, Orkin says, but different types of termites swarm at different times. Subterranean termites swarm in the spring and summer while drywood termites usually swam in the late summer and fall. Orkin says termites find their way into homes because urbanization leaves fewer dead trees laying around. "U.S. residents spend an estimated billion annually to control termites and repair termite damage – which occurs in approximately 600,000 homes each year,” said Glen Ramsey, an Orkin entomologist.RELATED: Devastating 'ARk' storm envisioned for California by U.S. Geological SurveyOrkin says the list is based on data from metro areas where the company performed the most first-time customer termite treatments from February 1, 2018 to January 31, 2019. Trees and shrubs close to homes can also pose a risk. Check out the lists below for what to look for if you're concerned you may have termites: Signs of a termite infestation include:A temporary swarm of winged insects in your home or from the soil around your homeAny cracked or bubbling paint or frass (termite droppings)Wood that sounds hollow when tappedMud tubes on exterior walls, wooden beams or in crawl spacesDiscarded wings from swarmersProactive tips that Orkin recommends for homeowners:Check water drainage sites to ensure they remain cleared and effective.Monitor the collection of moisture by fixing pipes, gutters, downspouts, A/C units and other fixtures susceptible to leaking.Caulk around utility lines or pipes.Get rid of rotting wood and debris near the home.Place screens on outside vents.Check wooden structures for damage. So, if you do find termites, do you need to tent your home? According to Orkin, structural fumigation is a treatment technique used to control drywood termite infestations. This type of treatment method should only be used when the infestation is extensive, hard to locate or difficult to access, the company says. Other types of treatment include termidor liquid termite treatments, dry foam and sentricon bait and monitoring. Click here for more information. 3024

SAN DIEGO (KGTV) - Researchers at UC San Diego Health say they can make a COVID-19 contact tracing app for smartphones but the technology may be getting pushback because of privacy concerns. On Tuesday, ABC10 News spoke to UC San Diego Health Chief Information Officer Dr. Christopher Longhurst about the app that he's offered to develop and study for San Diego County."From a University of California stand point, we're comfortable endorsing this as an appropriate means of helping control this pandemic more quickly while preserving the privacy of our citizens," he told ABC10 News.He said the app would look a lot like Canada's app which was released last Friday. Using a tool created by Apple and Google, it produces random codes and uses Bluetooth to ping other users' phones and share those codes when two people are physically close to each other. "So, the idea is that if I were diagnosed with COVID-19, I would then be given a code [and voluntarily opt in to] put that code into my exposure notification app and that would let other people know who had been near me that they might have been exposed and should be tested," he added.ABC10 News asked Dr. Longhurst about what situations could make it more effective than using human contact tracers. "Contact tracing is a methodology that's been around for 50 years and we've used it for sexually transmitted infections and other outbreaks. It works really well when you're talking about who you might have been intimate with. It's much harder when you think about who you breathed air with. [Additionally], there's limits to being able to actually contact those folks," he responded. When asked about why the technology isn't being implemented in San Diego County, he told ABC10 News, "Our partners at San Diego County Public Health have been very enthusiastic about embracing this new technology but the Apple and Google API can only be used by state public health agencies so we're dependent on the state of California to approve moving this forward."Other countries have moved forward but the U.S. has been slower. Dr. Longhurst attributes that to privacy concerns, but said the program protects anonymity and doesn't track location. "We've really closely evaluated this technology and we believe that the privacy preserving goals have been met," he added. On Tuesday, San Diego County officials confirmed that it's the state of California's decision to go forward and added in part, "If there is an opportunity for the County to partner with the state in a pilot, we would be open to further discussions about this."The California Department of Public Health sent the following response to ABC10 News."The state’s contact tracing program isn’t using contact tracing smartphone technology. Contact tracing involves notifying people who have been in close contact with an infected person to prevent the disease from spreading to others, and most of that work can be done by phone, text, email and chat.We are aware of San Diego's interest in utilizing a contact tracing application. We continue to focus on standing up the manual contact tracing process (via phone, text, email and chat) and the data management tool that assists our contact tracing workforce." 3226
