Police have made an arrest in the death of Melinda Pleskovic — a long-time Strongsville, Ohio teacher.The fiancé of Melinda's daughter has been charged with aggravated murder.Jeffrey Scullin, 20, was arrested Tuesday. He told the dispatcher the person he saw looked like him."Probably a male," he can be heard saying on the call. "They were around my size and I'm pretty big. Police are looking for a man wanted for the disappearance and possible homicide in connection with a two-year-old near Bakersfield, California.Officers initiated an investigation into the disappearance of Ramon Angel Reyes-Chavez, 2, around 8:40 p.m. Wednesday night, police said.During the investigation, detectives developed information leading them to believe that Reyes-Chavez was the victim of a homicide.Detectives identified Kaleb Jordan Kessinger, 20, as a suspect in this case.They attempted to contact him when they saw him driving his car, but he took off about 10:45 p.m. Officers said he later crashed his car near Calloway Drive and Olive Drive.He was last seen running from the area.Officers were on scene in the Kern River Canyon, about three miles in near Democrat Boat Launch, regarding the investigation around 2 p.m. on Wednesday.Detectives obtained an arrest warrant for Kessinger for charges which include homicide and felony child abuse.  Kessinger is described as 6'2", 198 lbs, with blonde hair and green eyes.Investigators said they are continuing their search for Ramon Reyes-Chavez and are asking the public to contact the Bakersfield Police Department (661) 327-7111 with any information regarding this case or the whereabouts of Reyes-Chavez or Kessinger.Kessinger was pulled over in 2016 for speeding and was suspected of driving under the influence. He had 6.4 nanograms of marijuana in his system while driving, according to the District Attorney's Office. Phoenix police say a young mother reported missing after her baby was?abandoned has been found dead. Police say the body of Jasmine Dunbar, 21, was found by police aircraft late Wednesday afternoon in the area of 107th Avenue and Camelback Road. Officials are awaiting official identification of the body through scientific analysis, but the body has been tentatively identified as Dunbar.The body had significant burn evidence.Dunbar was last seen with her ex-boyfriend Antwaun Travon Ware, 20, on Tuesday night.Family members told Scripps station KNXV in Phoenix she left home with Ware and her 7-month-old baby around 7:30 p.m. The infant was found alone in her car seat along the road near 83rd and Minnezona avenues around 10 p.m.Police located Ware at his home on Wednesday morning and he agreed to come to police headquarters for an interview.Due to evidence collected, police developed probable cause to arrest Ware on one count of first-degree murder, kidnapping, abandonment of a body and child abuse. People from across the country flock to Florida for the endless warm weather and miles of beaches, but as the November presidential election inches closer, people are turning their heads to the state for another reason.“Florida is the largest swing state,” said Aubrey Jewett, a Political Science Professor at the University of Central Florida. “If you look at the last six presidential elections, Florida has voted three times for Republicans and three times for Democrats and each time for the winner.”However, for hundreds of thousands of Floridians, this election means something else.“I grew up here in Sanford, Florida. Born and raised,” Davion Hampton said. “I have 15 children, well 16 children including one of my steps.”Hampton wears many hats in his community. Father, electrical engineer, landscaper, part owner of this convenience store, among other things.“Proper living arrangements is what I do, and feeding the people,” he said.But he hasn’t always been seen by others as the provider he is now. “I was arrested in 2008, charged with conspiracy of trafficking cocaine, my first charge ever. First time I ever was incarcerated, first time ever with a set of bracelets on,” he explained. “I did 30.5 months in the Department State of Correction.”It’s a seemingly stark contrast to who he is today, the man wearing many hats and the employer of more than 30 people in his community.“Had I not gone to prison God knows, only knows, where I’d be today,” Hampton said.Now, he’s facing a battle with thousands of others in Florida, a battle over the right to vote.“I’m currently not a registered voter, I currently still owe about ,000 in fines and fees,” he said. “I’ve been paying on it for the last 10 years. Since I’ve been home almost, I’ve been paying on it every month. 0 a month and it just seems like that thing isn’t moving.”In 2018, Florida passed Amendment 4, which restored voting rights to most convicted felons who served their time, as long as they weren’t charged with murder or sex crimes.“Up until just a few years ago, Florida was one of a handful of states that mostly, permanently disenfranchised convicted felons,” Jewett said. “The end result is that over some time, Florida by some estimate ended up with about 1.4 million felons.” Jewett has spent more than two decades studying Florida politics.“Then the big issue became, what does all terms of sentence mean?” he added.In came the debate of fines and fees associated with the charges, and whether or not they needed to be paid before former felons could register to vote. The backers of Amendment 4 claim it’s an illegal poll tax, one U.S. district court judge agreed, but the state filed an appeal which left thousands unsure if they can even register, even if they could afford to pay.“Thus the thought is that anything that might alter the balance, either favoring Republicans or Democrats, might be a really big deal because you might actually sway the way Florida votes in a presidential election and in a close president election, that might actually make a difference in who wins,” Jewett explained.Another issue lies in the fact that there is no central recording system of who owes what. It’s all county based and how they record differs, so some former felons who have completed their sentence may not know about any lingering fines or fees.“It’s not about swinging left or swinging right, it's about swinging straight forward into the issues that impact people with felony convictions and that's what we’re most concerned about,” Desmond Meade said. Meade is the Executive Director of the Florida Rights Restoration Coalition, a grassroots membership organization run by returning citizens.“We believe that no American citizen should be forced to choose between putting food on their kids plate or voting,” he said. The coalition is working with former felons on identifying unpaid fees, and helping pay them off. “Probably about an average of ,000 per individual,” Meade said. “We were able to raise over million.”But for Hampton, those fees he owes that have accrued interest over the years may not be paid off before the October 5 voter registration deadline in Florida.“I was always under the impression that the fines and fees needed to be paid before you can vote,” he said. “Every individual that is a tax paying citizen should have the right to vote.”Instead, he said he brings awareness to the community, to help others register to vote in the meantime.“My take for this particular election is that no matter what happens at this point at the court level, it's probably going to be too late to see any big increase in voter registration,” Jewett said. 4679

Parents worried about a lack of social-emotional growth in their young children during social distancing and child care closures, consider playing with the family dog or taking the whole family on the dog's walk.A study published this week in Pediatric Research points to improvements in toddlers’ behavior interacting with others when they have some amount of time spent with the family dog.Information from more than 1,600 parents were included in the study, which asked how old their children were, if they had a dog, how often the child went on the family dog walks or actively played with the dog, as well as other questions. In addition, parents filled out a Strengths and Difficulties Questionnaire about their child’s development and behavior.Overall, researchers found that preschool aged children from dog-owning homes had reduced likelihood of conduct problems and increased likelihood of prosocial behavior compared to children without a dog. Positive results were seen with family dog walking at least once a week and active play between the family and dog at least three times or more a week.The study’s authors report part of their motivation for the study was the decreasing physical activity levels of young children. They reference studies on increased activity among adult dog owners, and wanted to look at whether there were increased levels in children with dogs in the home.Participants live in Australia, and gave their survey results between 2015 to 2018 as part of a larger early childhood education and care research project.The Strengths and Difficulties Questionnaire is a commonly used, 25-item document that measures the social and emotional well-being of children.If a family dog is not possible at this time, maybe consider offering to walk a neighbor’s pet; physical activity, interacting with an animal and the benefit of doing something nice for a neighbor. 1900
