An Ohio couple was stunned to find a Nazi symbol on a pizza they picked up from Little Caesars Pizza Saturday night.Jason Laska was running an errand for his wife and picked up a pizza from the Little Caesars in Brook Park.“I walked in. I said, ‘What do you guys have left?’ And they said a pepperoni and a cheese and I said ‘give me the pepperoni,’” Laska said.He told WEWS he paid for the grab-and-go pizza but didn’t look inside the box until he got home, but his wife said she was disgusted to find pepperonis carefully arranged in the shape of a backward swastika. So my husband stopped at #LittleCaesars for a quick bite, husband brings this home! I’m truly disappointed. This is truly saddening and disturbing and not funny at all! These aren’t funny jokes and shouldn’t be made period and on company time?! ???????????????????? pic.twitter.com/zQaXecN2se— misty laska (@LaskaMisty) June 28, 2020 “I look at it like with my head back a little and I’m like, ‘Oh My God,’” Misty Laska said.A spokesperson for Little Caesar Enterprises, Inc. denounced racism in a written statement and confirmed the employees responsible for the swastika were immediately fired.“We have zero tolerance for racism and discrimination in any form, and these franchise store employees were immediately terminated. We’re deeply disappointed that this happened, as this conduct is completely against our values,” Jill Proctor said. “We have also reached out to the customer to discuss this personally with him.”Jason Laska said he is stunned someone would have the audacity to create an image like that amid the current civil unrest in America.“These are the kinds of things that are continuing to fuel the hate and the confusion that exists in the country and in the world,” Laska said.He added he was contacted by both Little Caesar Enterprises, Inc. corporate offices and the franchise owner who apologized for an insensitive joke between employees.“Two of the employees kind of were, I guess, egging each other on, or one was egging the other on to play a joke on a third employee that was there,” Laska said. “That was why it was not cut or anything like that. They made it as a joke and it was never intended to go out to a customer, but it did.”The couple hopes the experience will be a teaching lesson for the employees who are allegedly under the age of 18.“What repercussions are they getting from that, just termination?” Misty Laska said, “When they can just go right down the street and find another job?”They told News 5 they chose to share their experience to encourage others to learn the history and hateful symbolism behind the Nazi slogan.“Even in a joking manner it’s absolutely unacceptable,” Jason Laska said.Misty Laska, who was the first to discover the hateful prank, encourages others to speak up when they hear or see people committing racist acts.“We’re trying to get rid of racism. It’s like, we’re done with that kind of stuff,” Laska said, “Just to remind people that keep saying, ‘There’s no racism,’ it’s like, yeah there really is still racism and right here is your proof.”WEWS' Emily Hamilton and Courtney Shaw originally reported this story. 3168

An Iowa couple and their two children died from inhaling toxic gas while vacationing in Mexico, local authorities said. The bodies of Kevin Wayne Sharp; his wife, Amy Marie Sharp; their son, Sterling, 12; and daughter Adrianna, 7, were discovered Friday at a rental condominium in the beach town of Tulum. The family had been dead for about 36 to 48 hours, the Quintana Roo prosecutor's office said Saturday. Autopsies showed they suffocated after inhaling toxic gases, but it's unclear what type of gas led to their deaths, the prosecutor's office added. There were no signs of foul play or suicide, officials said.Investigators ruled out a possible robbery because they did not see evidence of a disturbance inside the condo.Photos released by Mexican officials show crews and firefighters wearing masks while checking a gas stove in the condo. They performed "physical inspection of the room's gas installation" and are expected to release a technical report at a later date.Jana Weland, a relative, told CNN the family arrived in Tulum on March 15. They were staying in a rental house they found through a vacation rental company. The last contact the family had with the Sharps was a picture the son posted on Snapchat of his feet by the water that day, Weland said. The Sharps were supposed to return from their vacation Wednesday, Weland said. Kevin Sharp, who owns a beer distribution company, failed to check in with his employees that morning as planned, which was unlike him, Weland said. Then the family failed to attend a basketball game Wednesday night in Danville, Illinois -- a game Weland said the family was looking forward to. But the extended family waited until Thursday night to call authorities in case the Sharps had problems with their flight. 1770

As investigators piece together what caused the limo crash that killed 20 people in upstate New York, more details are coming out about the 17 passengers, who had gotten together to celebrate a birthday.Authorities have not released all of the victims names, but the close-knit group were newlyweds, artists, athletes and young parents. Four were sisters. The limo failed inspection. And the driver wasn't properly licensed."Everyone's lives were cut way too short, and I don't know what to say about it. It just hurts," Karina Halse told CNN on Monday while visiting the scene of the accident where her older sister, Amanda Halse, was killed. Here's what we know about the victims: 688

Artificial turf has been a staple in many pro sports stadiums for about 50 years. And while there's no doubt that AstroTurf and its modern equivalent, FieldTurf, have changed the way pro football and baseball have been played, the surfaces have generally been considered safe for athletes to play on.But on Monday, the NFL Player's Association formally called on team owners to "proactively change all field surfaces to natural grass," citing higher rates of injuries to players who are playing on artificial fields. In an open letter, NFLPA President J.C. Tretter — a center for Cleveland Browns in the midst of his eighth NFL season — claimed that most of his teammates preferred to play on grass, noting that his joints felt "noticeably stiffer" after playing on artificial turf."The unforgiving nature of artificial turf compounds the grind on the body we already bear from playing a contact sport," Tretter wrote. In his letter, Tretter wrote that real grass offers more "give," reducing the stress on feet, ankles and knees. He also noted that NFL injury data shows players have a 28% higher rate of non-contact lower extremity injuries when playing on artificial turf.Tretter also noted that despite harsh conditions, cold-weather cities like Cleveland, Green Bay and Pittsburgh still use traditional grass fields. In addition, indoor stadiums in Las Vegas and Phoenix also use grass surfaces."Agronomically, natural grass field surfaces are possible everywhere," Tretter said.As of 2020, 17 of 31 NFL stadiums use traditional grass.Tretter's letter comes weeks after the NFL was forced to inspect the artificial turf at MetLife Stadium — home of the Jets and Giants — after several high-profile players were injured in the surface in the opening weeks of the season. Among those hurt during weeks 2 and 3 of the season were 49ers players George Kittle Nick Bosa, Jimmy Garoppolo and Raheem Mostert. In 2015, Houston's NRG Stadium switched from natural grass to an artificial surface after more than a decade amid player criticism over injury concerns. Due to its retractable roof, groundskeepers grew grass in trays outdoors and then brought the trays indoors and assembled them together with forklifts to form the playing surface. Players claimed the system created seams in the playing surface which led to injuries, and the stadium even faced a lawsuit from a former player who claimed the grass led to a career-ending injury.Tretter's Browns teammate, wide receiver Odell Beckham Jr., was lost for the season this week after suffering an ACL tear while playing on an artificial surface at Paul Brown Stadium in Cincinnati on Sunday. 2649

Arizona Sen. John McCain, a former Republican presidential nominee and prisoner of war, has died after a battle with an aggressive form of brain cancer. The 30-year Arizona Senator leaves behind wife, Cindy, and 7 children.John Sidney McCain III, 81, was the son and grandson of Navy admirals. He was born August 29, 1936.As a naval pilot, he narrowly escaped death in a fire aboard the USS Forrestal in 1967. Also in 1967, McCain's plane was shot down over Hanoi, and he was captured by North Vietnamese troops. He was tortured during more than five years as a prisoner of war.RELATED:?50 photos that capture John McCain's personalityCelebrity deaths of 2018: Remembering those we've lost this yearAfter retiring from the Navy in 1981, he moved in Arizona and ran for Congress, winning a U.S. House seat the following year. After two terms, he was elected to the U.S. Senate, succeeding Barry Goldwater, and served in the role until his death.McCain married Cindy Hensley, his second wife, in 1980. She is the daughter of an Arizona beer distributor.McCain is father to seven children, including Bridget, a daughter adopted from Bangladesh. Another daughter, Meghan McCain, is a television host on ABC’s The View.A low point in his political career came when McCain was implicated in the Keating Five campaign contribution scandal of the 1980s. The senator emerged with a new passion to reform money in politics. Called a maverick, he bucked his party as he worked with Democrats on campaign finance and other issues.McCain also campaigned for president in 2000 and 2008. In 2008, he won the Republican nomination with a surprising choice of running mate, then-Alaska Gov. Sarah Palin. After his second failed presidential bid, McCain continued as senator, assuming the role of an elder statesman. He visited troops overseas and dug into foreign policy. McCain, due to the lasting impacts of his torture as a POW, could not lift his arms above his head. He had other health scares, including bouts of skin cancer that left a large scar on his cheek. In July 2017, Sen. McCain was diagnosed with glioblastoma, the deadly brain cancer which took his life.Even in his waning days, McCain lived up to his reputation as a maverick. In August 2017, less than two weeks after surgery to remove his tumor, McCain returned to the U.S. Senate floor to become the deciding "no" vote on repealing Obamacare.Senator McCain had a joke he famously told throughout his life. Whenever he got upsetting news, he said he slept like a baby, explaining that he slept two hours, woke up and cried, then slept two more hours and did the same. It’s that wit that many of his closest friends say they’ll remember him by in the days ahead. No funeral arrangements have been announced, but in an interview with “60 Minutes”, Senator McCain recently said he wanted the ceremony to take place at the Naval Academy in Maryland.  2913
