SAN DIEGO (KGTV) — It looks like just another small apartment. Living room. Bedroom. Kitchen.But the apartment complex 10News toured is unlike any other. It's a solution for homelessness."People go into treatment, they get out, they relapse and the go back in and they get stuck in this thing we call the churn of in and out, and in and out of services."So Chris and Tammy Megison came up with a solution: Solutions for Change. The idea is to get families with children off the streets and into a program that would change their lives forever."We get them jobs right away, put them to work so they can learn the soft skills of working," Chris Megison said. "They're up at 5:30. Kids are fed and off to school. And now they're going to classes, they're going to work."Solutions for change works because of its motto, driven by accountability. It's a 1000 day program. Every client must have a job, and most work in the solutions aguaponic farm. They grow their own organic food, and what they don't eat they sell, and the proceeds go back into the program. "They're not looking to be a band-aid fix, they're looking to be a 'hand up' organization. They're not lowering the bar for people who find themselves in a pretty dark tragic place, they're trying to raise the bar and set people up for future success," San Diego County Supervisor Kristin Gaspar said.And since 1999, Solutions for Change has helped 900 families escape homelessness. People like Melissa Martinez and her children who not long ago were separated without a place to call home."It's put us all back under one roof. It's actually be a lot easier than I could have ever imagined, getting everybody to and from school, to and from work, we're really united and working as a team. SAN DIEGO (KGTV) - Lifeguards removed a body found floating in the ocean off Sunset Cliffs Friday morning, according to San Diego Fire-Rescue.First responders were notified about 9:30 a.m. about the remains near Point Loma Ave. Lifeguards removed the body and transported it to their headquarters, officials said.The person had been in the water “a while”, according to San Diego Police.Officers told 10News they would be handling the discovery as a death report and not sending a homicide team to investigate.The person's identity and cause of death were not immediately available. 590

SAN DIEGO (KGTV) -- In an effort to help San Diego's homeless population, the City of San Diego is proposing a third storage facility the homeless can use to store their belongings. The city organized a town hall in July to gather input for the facility that would be placed on 54th and Lea Street.According to the San Diego Housing Commission, the facilities provide a "safe place for individuals who are experiencing homelessness to keep their belongings as they look for work, attend classes, or meet with a service provider or doctor."One of the centers, located on the 200 block of 16th Street, provides bins for more than 400 homeless individuals. Although the centers provide a service to San Diego's homeless population, some residents have made their opposition clear. Before one of the facilities opened in Sherman Heights, residents voiced their concerns. Neighbors told 10News they worried the facility would increase illegal activity and pose safety concerns in the area. To address concerns, security was placed inside the building as well as patrols sent out into the neighborhood. SAN DIEGO (KGTV) -- Like so many businesses throughout San Diego County, businesses along the border in San Ysidro are also preparing to scale back operations because of the state's COVID-19 purple tier.Businesses in the border region have already seen a significant decline in business because of international travel restrictions currently in place. Since March, the border has been closed to all tourist travel, only open for essential needs, like going to work or getting medical care. Tuetano Taqueria is one of the businesses affected. Just blocks from the border, its owners are doing everything it can to stay open. The trendy taco shop is run by Fernando Covarrubias and his wife, Chef Priscilla Curiel. During the initial stay-at-home order, the couple had to lay off their employees and run the business themselves. The taqueria was recently honored, making the Michelin Guide, famous for it's tacos served with the option of bone marrow on the side. Now, the owners are getting ready to scale back to takeout orders because of the purple tier restrictions. According to the San Ysidro Chamber of Commerce, from March to July, roughly 100 businesses closed permanently. Jason Wells, the chamber's executive director, said the border travel restrictions are devastating the region. Wells said all businesses in the area are hurting, but retail has taken the biggest hit. According to Wells, about 95% of customers in the area are from Mexico.Wells explained that most of the businesses along the border make their biggest profits during the holidays, and the state's purple tier isn't helping. If the border travel restrictions continue, Wells thinks more businesses will not survive. Covarrubias and his wife are hoping people will follow the health guidelines so COVID-19 case rates go down and business can get back to full operation. Despite their struggles, the couple is working on opening a second business in National City, called Mujer Divina, a coffee shop that will also serve burritos. Purple tier restrictions take effect Saturday at midnight. Border travel restrictions are in place until Nov. 21, but could be extended. 2153
